Hamish sounds like such a top bloke, wanted to make sure his teammate was alright, was probably the bloke most looking out for Gaff, even though it was his own brother that Gaff had clocked.

As Freo supporter, I felt so bad for Andy getting biffed, a young player against the older Gaff. And yes I was absolutely angry at Gaff. But given all the background info of the man/player Gaff is, it was just a shitty incident that looked so bad but not intentional to smack him in the jaw. God knows there are similar, not as bad, incidents every season. Thanks for this! Someone new to follow!!! Good job guys!

It’s good to see a Fremantle supporter being unbiased in this. I truly commend you, Rachel. You can see Gaff repeatedly punching Brayshaw in the chest beforehand. When he makes contact with Brayshaw’s jaw, the angle of the punch is the same as the previous chest punches, the difference being that Brayshaw lowered his body to charge into Gaff. Brayshaw’s own father publicly said that he believed the contact to the jaw to be an accident.

It's a good lesson for players at the time. A lot of those body punches are gone. You just never know where a punch will land. If he got him in the throat it may have been worse.

That incident happened not far from us but we didn't get a great view except that there'd been a hit. I remember we didn't get any replays of it at the ground so Freo were copping a hostile reception from the (unknowing) crowd for the tag on Gaff, which didn't... play well externally.

@Soussy if you think all the supporters of one club are stupid and all the supporters of your club are great it really only demonstrates you're one of the stupid supporters for our club. There are feral fans in every supporter base, dont pretend we dont have them too. Particularly when you're going some way to demonstrate it personally.

The silver lining of this situation is that Gaff had to sit on the sidelines and watch while the rest of his teammates celebrated winning the Grand Final. When you physically assault someone, (potentially killing them), you don't get nice things.

My 8 year old had his teeth pulled back down by a dentist under local anisthetic. 6 jabs. Worst 30 minutes of my life, unquestionably. Horror show. Really maturely handled by the brother.

I had exact same thing done under local anaesthetic, shocker of an injury. Mine was a knee to the face. Doc told me teeth would last 3 years max. Here I am 20 years later, same teeth haha

Umpires should be paying those frees to avoid these heated incidents. I mean brayshaws back is turned to the play, well off the ball, and he’s literally checking any of Gaffs movement. If it’s paid as shepparding off the ball like it should be, players likely won’t get incensed enough to lash out. Umps have an obligation to police illegal tactics off the ball. Edit: I’m all for taggers (run-with) players in the game, but the moment you face away from play while negating any free movement of an opposition player… well… you cease to be playing football.

i think gaff is a perfectly nice bloke and you can clearly see how guilty he felt after this and i dont think he intentionally aimed for andy's face. but at the same time he did still punch him in the face, break his jaw, made him have to have liquified foods for weeks and shove his teeth back into his gum. gaff was victimised more in this situation than the actual victim, sure andy was tagging him and thats annoying but that in no way deserves getting punched in the face for and whether intentional or not sure i may feel bad for gaff but he totally deserved the punishment and suspension he was given.

@Soussy yeah i know that andy ducked coz he was going for a push. im not saying gaff punched him in the face on purpose, i think he was going for his stomach to try and get him to back off. but he still should've been more careful, its still his fault all that stuff happened so he deserved the punishment he got.

As a Dockers supporter in a sad way I think the derby in itself needed something like this to had happened. The game itself had been losing any bit of spice and rivalry the Derby's held because you guys were just destroying us. This incident made Derby days in the future that bit more interesting.

@@keeleybrinded5558 obviously you never want anyone jaws broken especially by such a cowardly act. But while Derby's were dead and Freo just getting smashed everyone. This gave the Derby's that something little extra and and really had all supporters involved and it still does. Best derby I ever witnessed live was the demolition derby and Dale Mickey got robbed out for like 14 weeks for bashing Phil read. Now that goes down in history as probably the best ever derby to date and it's all that thuggery aswell from that the W.A rivalry was born. Lots of bad things happen in life not just a footy field mate, that does not mean you wanted that to happen but if it did you might as well find that bit off crap and from that negative look and find the positive from it.

As a brother, that's beyond a foreign instinct for me. Imagine looking your father in the eye and saying the bloke who broke the baby of the family's jaw is a good guy and i've been really worried about his mental health so i thought i'd cheer him up..it's just wrong.

Hamish meant he was okay in that he was going to recover. He still had a broken jaw and teeth knocked out, needed surgery and wires in his mouth for weeks. Do you honestly think that punch deserved no punishment?
