Congratulations to all three of you for having the courage to make this massive change in your lives. We too were put off by the politics in 2019 and sold our business (also in hospitality) and our home above St. Helena in Napa Valley and moved to Bucerias Nayarit Mexico and it has been the very best choice we could have made. A life less focused on possessions and more focused on spending quality time with family and friends is exactly what we needed. We did include La Paz in our home search as we always vacationed in Southern Baja but decided the mainland offered more of what we were looking for. Wishing you the very best in your new home and on the sale of this one. Edited to include that I just downloaded your book on Audible.

$430K??? Premium price for standard gringo hacienda! Green friendly homes reduce waste, costs, pollution, environment impact, etc. Solar and water distribution systems are basic starting points. Unless you love hot weather, lose the six burner stove, which only serves to increase cooling costs. Induction stoves are cool to touch and do not add heat and pollution to the area, again basic knowledge, unless you like paying high AC Bills to compensate for gas! Think people! Buenos Dias!

To be honest, LaPaz really accommodates any budget. My next-door neighbor and friend Kody rented his house with a huge yard for 12,000 pesos a month. The beauty of LaPaz is whatever your lifestyle and the WMI (what's most important) fits here. The mostly free outdoor experiences here are second to none. If you want to spend 1000 pesos on a meal here you can. You can also spend 75 pesos for an equally good meal. Come hang out in LaPaz during your travels. You will love it!
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 3 ай бұрын
I agree with Matthew - you can find something to fit any budget in La Paz. Just depends on what's important. The further from other expats, the lower the price will be. You could even just buy a piece of land and build a small addition to your RV. That said, the mainland is definitely more affordable overall.

The idea that you can't be creative and do a regular job is false. Wallace Stevens, one of America's greatest poets, worked as an insurance executive by day and wrote great poetry when he was not working. He had plenty of money, a decent home, transportation, food, health care, etc. The great painter Vermeer had very little income, died prematurely and had at least 8 children. If it wasn't for his wife and mother-in-law, the children might have become homeless.

Writing is one of the most difficult ways to make any money. I retired at 56 due to cancer. Now 68, lived in Houston since 87, started writing screenplays on the side. Got some good feedback, but no chance of selling them. Writing takes a schedule, great discipline, a marketing plan, and luck to make money at it. It might be easier to do coding from home or another work from home job if you want income.

If a doctor on average makes 50k US dollars per year in Mexico then in reality they still could not afford a home in the 400k to 500k. This tells me that these home prices do not make sense. There are only so many foreigners who can buy homes in Mexico. This means that home prices should reflect what Mexicans can afford. It is a shame that people want to out price their country's people. Mexico is beautiful in its own way like the United States, but let's be real before I pay US prices in Mexico I would spend them in America. Every foreigner should respect the people of Mexico by not out pricing them from their home land. Let's be responsible to our fellow humans.
