My Name Is was put out to get radio play. Guilty Conscience.... he got Hate for!!! The Vice Presidents wife tried to get his music banned! They were trying to cancel him from the very beginning! But his shock rap captured the attention of teenagers everywhere! Putting him in the mainstream and there was no stopping him after that!

Yep... of course. If you entered this world, you have to follow Em's journey... imagine what this album was like when it came out... (most likely you weren't even born). For all of us who were part of that generation, Em brought us a breath of fresh air... we were still quite repressed in some aspects, and he tore down all the walls... they tried to cancel him from all the powerful entities (government - journalism - producers). There was no one who wasn't against him, but here he is still... it's incredible, but he did it.

It's funny how younger people assume this was 'acceptable' 25 years ago when it came out. He got so much heat for this album that half the next album is him telling everyone to fuck off. Yeah, the young people loved it, but the adults were losing their minds.

People get it so backwards. Sure. More ppl are pussy now. But there were always folks just waitin to be appalled for attention and a heightened sense of self importance lol n folks who are softer than fish shit n just get offended like it's their job. The big change is the folks sayin the shit that offends ppl started folding. Buckling. Ppl used to say "I'm offended" and we used to... I mean, we'd be decent humans. Maybe say "tht wasn't my intention". But we understood you bein offended is YOUR business. If I wasn't gonna stand behind what I said(joke or not) i wouldn't have even said it, in the first place. Even by sayin "oh you could say xyz back then"... no, there were always consequeunces. You could then and you can now. But the more ppl repeat that nonsense the more our culture will believe you can't. Til... it becomes reality. N mfers are really goin to jail for it in 50 years But for now... you can still say whatever tf you want. Just do it the way we did it and when ppl say "I'm offended" say "oh. Well ok." And that's that As soon as folks wanted EVERYONE to accept their opinions and agree with thrm without pissin anybody off... that's when it changed. But it's 100% an illusion. "Oh. You're offended. Well. That's interesting". ... the end. All it needs to be.

It's rap, anything is acceptable we have freedom of speech. Even today you could rap this
@nunisthathigh4825
@nunisthathigh4825 3 ай бұрын
@@bensmiley7042 no you couldn't. Freedom of speech is pretty much nonexistent now, the corporate structure will silence and shadow ban you, etc. Thought crime approach. For example, if you could rap this stuff now, how come Eminem's new stuff is nothing like his old stuff? It's watered down, Em became that which he was previously speaking out against and satirizing.
@bensmiley7042
@bensmiley7042 3 ай бұрын
@nunisthathigh4825 yeah but for rappers it doesn't matter if you're independent, if you're with a big record label then sure. And I know about the freedom of speech being less existent now a days I live in canada. Trudeau is trying to pass a bill that makes misgendering someone a hate crime
@nunisthathigh4825
@nunisthathigh4825 3 ай бұрын
@@bensmiley7042 yes, technically. If something's underground then yeah, hardly anyone knows about it since if society knows about it, it's not underground, it's polluted by the interests of the corporation and the people. Underground expression means exactly how it sounds, full on independent expression. The thing is though, that it's the US surveillance state that makes free speech in America more tricky. Because how can anyone have the outlet for free speech if there's so much put on the spotlight? It's very reflective of the curse of fame, like if a member of a rock band had his picture taken by the paparazzi while he's smoking a hash joint. He'll later face a bunch of backlash from reactionary types (a lot of youtubers I'm sure) and possibly gain the unwanted attention of police too, 'cause...the US war on drugs. Or when a celebrity is taking his date to a coffeehouse and in comes the paparazzi to take a picture. Fame means you have no private life. So many take a look at the idea of privacy rights and think, "Well, we don't really have privacy anymore and really what's the big deal?" The big deal is it's the surveillance, not even from big brother nor corporations, but society itself that still makes the same problem because society tends to impose authoritarianism on each other. It's like the book One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, it was a very antiauthoritarian book revolving around Murphy, a captured bank robber who feigns insanity 'cause he thinks the psychiatric asylum would be better than prison...when it clearly isn't. And yes, psychiatric asylums especially back then in the early 60s/late 50s time period were pretty horrid...but how did they end up in a psychiatric asylum? People. It's their family who phoned them in and had the supposedly mentally unwell "committed." If in hypothetical America does become officially totalitarian it'll be backed up by the surveillance state that will allow government authorities to impose their draconian "worst George Orwell nightmare" measures because then they'll be able to have everyone in a spotlight. And this danger is already happening in the US now (project 2025). The GOP and think tanks are trying to impose official totalitarianism by the year 2025 and to be technical...there's been certain measures that have been imposed as of late that suggests the politicians are working things in already.

I was 15 when this came out. And trust me.... EVERY WHITE TEENAGE BOY IN AMERICA immediately convened a top secret emergency convention and we instantly elected Slim Shady our new King of the White Boys we would follow into Hell and back. Seriously, this album came at the perfect time in our lives. We appreciated it because we all recognized it was so obviously absurd comedy that we didn't take it serious. I remember it came out around Spring Break in 1999, and was the perfect album at the perfect time. If you wanted to get into some mischief, this was your soundtrack that year. Eminem just made being a regular white boy who argued with their parents and drank beer and smoked weed on the weekend and did stupid White boy shit *the coolest thing ever.*

You can release this today. People want us to think free speech is gone. It’s not. He got so much backlash. He dealt with it and everyone who mattered knew it was art. We all knew it was not his real life. It was his imaginative outlet. Maybe the feelings came from real issues in his life but the murder and comedy and stories weren’t. We need someone to release something this bold now. This made people realize you could say harsh things, in crazy skillful ways, piss people off, and still be revolutionary and respected. Be brave. Be like eminem in 99.

Yeah parents were scared of Eminems music during that era. We were even told to not listen to Eminem music by the teachers. The guy was a menace..... His music did make my language crude but most of the things he did there we never copied, we knew it was jokes and exaggerated. When i became an adult and re-listening to his music I notice that a lot of his music is outlet of things he is dealing with personally but he releases in a more fucked up or diabolical way to the listener's ears. Foe example his nototious song "Kim" is him expressing his anger and frustration with his on and off baby mother and their toxic relationship.

Marshall Mathers. M and M. MM. Eminem. This wasn't acceptable back in the day either. There was protests at CD stores around the country to get him off the shelves. It was awesome. I was in 5th grade so ai was loving it lol. I wish this came out now. People would lose their fucking minds hahahahahaha.

You definitely could NOT say this stuff back then... Which is why Em got soooo much shit for this album. He talks a lot about it in the next album.
