During the middle of the 1976 NFL season, free agent quarterback Terry Hanratty declared himself to be signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and talked about how it was a done deal and how excited he was to be joining the team and playing for head coach John McKay. And that would be cool and all... if it wasn't for the fact that the Bucs never had any contact with the man and had no idea what he was talking about

Fun Fact: As bad as the Bucs offense was in 1976, the 1977 offense was worse even though they won 2 games. That team was shut out 6 times including 4 times in 5 games, scored 10 or less points(including the shutouts) 11 times, and before scoring a whopping 33 points in their first victory over the Saints the Bucs had racked up a total of 53 points, 23 of which came in a game against the Seahawks so take away that game and in 11 of their first 12 games they scored a combined 30 points. 2 seasons later they were in the NFC Championship game. In total they scored 103 points in a 14 game season averaging just a shade over 7 PPG.

Another little-known story of that 42-0 thrashing the Steelers doled out to Tampa Bay that year was that the Bucs also signed a former prison inmate off the street to play defensive end. He had no knowledge of the playbook and hadn't seen the field since college, if I remember the story correctly. He had just recently been released and the Bucs needed depth that week, so they signed him and just told him to rush the QB every play. If I'm remembering this right, he recorded no sacks and no tackles and did next to nothing the rest of the year, after which he was released and never played in the NFL again.

Of course, something like this would happen with the early Buccaneers. Wasn't Hugh Culverhouse even worse than Bill Bidwell, Mike Brown, or Bill Sullivan in terms of being cheap?

You really need some Bucco Bruce helmets! I'm a longtime Buccaneers fan, but Hanratty joined the club a few years before I was born, so I wasn't aware of his stunt. The last thing my Bucs needed was more crappy QB play because they had enough of it from Steve Spurrier and Parnell Dickinson! I'm not surprised that Hanratty struggled against his old mates in Pittsburgh because the Bucs' offense struggled against defenses that didn't have defensive lines like the Steel Curtain.

I always find it funny when a sports’ “postseason” is mentioned long before there was an extended post season like there is now in almost every sport. Until 1967, there was exactly 1 post season game every year. Terry Hanratty joined the Steelers two years later.

And here is what might have been Terry Hanratty’s final game as a Steeler…the last game ever played between a college all-star team vs the previous Super Bowl champ, in 1976. In this clip, he gets picked off by the college kids, only to be overshadowed by what’s got to be the most hellacious thunderstorm to ever occur at a pro or college football game. Well this game got called off in the 3rd quarter in what turned out to be the final game of this series. Crazy stuff! m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bM6ckq2b2NvdmGg.html&pp=ygUaMTk3NiBjb2xsZWdlIGFsbCBzdGFyIGdhbWU%3D

I can appreciate, as a Gator, you didnt try to say Steve Spurrier did some good things in Tampa. He did not. If you wanted to say he would return one day, and coach the Tampa Bay BANDITS. Of the USFL. That happened. Its okay to say it. Much better times than Buccaneer stuff . Any time around that one. They made the playoffs in '79, and won a playoff game, too. That was the only highlight in franchise history until the late 90s.

Terry Hanratty only lasted as long as he did because he was from nearby Butler, Pennsylvania and the fact that the Steelers other QB aside from Bradshaw--Joe Gilliam--struggled with substance abuse. Sad since Gilliam was arguably their best QB in those years--even Terry Bradshaw admitted as much.
