In Sahih Bukhari 391, Muhammad(saw) says that anyone who faces the qibla and prays the way Muslims do, along with eating animals that are slaughtered by Muslims, that person is a Muslim. Ahmadis are as Muslims as Sunnis or Shias. There are different interpretations of Islam and everyone who claims to be a Muslim is a Muslim.

You did get that this guy shot at the mosque because he thought they were Muslims - regardless of what you think, that is the reason for his actions. Seems like you would want to embrace them as fellow Muslims since they have acted with kindness and grace in response to a horrific action. While I am not a Muslim, that would seem to embody the spirit of Islam. Not the label that you put on their religion.
