I believe he produced and directed it, he also stared in it. He made a sequel too. The first is a pretty decent directorial debut, the second isn't a bad movie but it's not the first. As far a older and newer rap goes, two things happened: 1) gangster rap took over and nearly killed off every other genre (as opposed to 80s-early 00s where there were multiple prolific rap genres) and b) it's too easy to get in the game and cash out now--most older groupds/mcs were in it for the long haul.
