I challenged ‪@eric-rosen‬ to a chess game starting from the dreaded Wagon Gambit. Is he ready to handle this incredibly tricky opening?

Funny how all that Stockfish preparation degenerated into a Napoleon-like game with both kings in the center and all the center of the board crowded with pieces, in which the best player checkmated first. You are always fun to watch, and one even learns something

jonathan was so upset by this loss he has not been returning Eric's calls ever since. jonathan even revealed on stream that he's thrown out his queen size full color print Eric Rosen bed sheets. truly a tragic rift between two of the best KZfaq chess creators. i hope they reunite with an analysis soon ❤

That was one complicated opening. Was thinking that if I was black in the position at around 5:20, I would have attacked the white queen with Nb6. After that, I have no idea. It just felt that was only way to keep the board open and in a delicate balance of keeping it under control

Qf6 was the losing move because it's of no immediate threat to white and Nxc7+ followed by Nxa8 becomes possible. Without Qf6, Nxc7 followed by Nxa8 is not possible because of Qa5+.

Is there any way we can get a redo on this because I have no idea what the wagon gambit is although I see Eric past up the the forbidden fruit that was offered. I'm not so sure Eric would have faired so well had he not been told anything about the game in advance. But I understand that certain moves must be made in the beginning to make it all work. In any case, we need a follow up video for this gambit.

Possibly just because it was the intuitive/obvious move. If you're facing an unknown gambit, you usually don't want to play into it. You'd rather play a slightly worse but safer move than a seemingly better but much sharper move

Taking that pawn before the queen moved would've been a blunder because of Qa5+. After Qf6, Eric realizes that he can take the pawn, but since he's already up material there's no point winning unrelevant pieces when his only risk comes from opposing tempo
