[Synopsis]
The granddaughter of the esteemed Yonglin leader, Helan Mingyu (Zhao Han Ying Zi) grew up well in the country of Sheng. Honest and bright, she caught the eye of many young men, but it was the Ninth Prince, Xiao Cheng Xu (Cheng Yi), who eventually won her heart. Happy as they were, their love was fated for ruin. Determined to help his older brother, Xiao Cheng Rui (Han Dong) ascend the throne, Cheng Xu sets out for war, well aware that his victory on the battlefield would help solidify his brother’s position as king. Leaving Mingyu behind, Cheng Xu departs, taking her heart with him.
With Cheng Xu gone, Mingyu soon finds herself caught up in the tangled inner-workings of the palace. Learning that the fate of Cheng Xu’s younger brother, Xiao Cheng Xuan (Zhao Wen Hao), is in her hands, Mingyu must act both quickly and prudently. To save Cheng Xuan, Mingyu does the unthinkable, making a sacrifice that will alter her life forever. The thing here is: she (Mingyu) had no choice because if she had chosen another girl it would mean war. The problem here is, instead of being honest with her son and allowing him to have who he loved as a consort, she fell into the trap of the other Dowager. As for the girl who ended up chosen to be the Empress, she really doesn't know how to behave. She knew he did not love her and still decided to poke him about it. No wonder how he will treat her later.

Everyone attacking Mingyu calling her a villain but is there really a choice for her? She carried the whole empire on her shoulder. Loves in the palace are just illusions, if you don’t fight for yourself then others will kill you. This drama is not romance but the reality of what a royal family really is. For favors, for powers, for clans, so many killings and sufferings. Born into the royal family, no one can escape this fate, sadly.

They need a movie where the son's stand up to their parent and marries who they love and cut ties with their parents, since their parents want to be on some nonsense. Also, this is why so many of them died lonely... full of anger and miserable.

@@mx.n.3682 love literally did not exist in those times. Even if it did, all the hurt, pain and the way society was then quickly ended all of that. Harem and backyard fights were insane and everyone looked for benefits, even the kindest person ends up changing to what they hated. It's just the type of society then. People married to consolidate power or out of lust and greed which were mostly caused by men, be it the women's family or the man and his family. The women end up warped by the way they are living and the constant betrayals from their husbands and they also end up living for power since that is all that could make them happy back then since love certainly couldn't

Why is everyone calling Mingyu the villain? Love never lasts- especially in the palace, it's literally nothing worth considering for. If her son chose that girl as his empress, he would volley her father into power and it compromises the stability of the entire imperial court. How can you run an empire properly when your ministers are literally fighting to the death? Your country will be a mess and your family will go down with it. That's ruining her son's life, he will have to handle that mess as Emperor. This is the imperial palace, you never get to choose love.

I have seen the earlier episodes, the Royal Mother was the beloved Consort of the previous Emperor and was already against all of these. She was against how emperors mustn't have heart and love towards their wives. She was so strong and impulsive at that time. But now she is the weakest character, falling into the same trap as the emperor and his brothers, just working for prestige and lineage.

3:17 the son left... the writer should have had the girl he loves leave to. Actually, had it my way... the young lady the Empress rejected would had made a grand exit and later kept refusing her invites. On top of that, would gave her secret authority & power nobody knew she had and show her cards right at the right moment.
