He Went from “The Next Iniesta” to a 13 Minute Liverpool Career | Arthur Melo

When Arthur Melo signed with Barcelona, he was hailed as the next great for the club, Xavi claimed that Barcelona’s transfer signing of the Brazilian would “mark an era” at the club, while others said he would be the next Iniesta, the next Xavi, or the next Thiago Alcantara.
Two years later, and Arthur was already on his way out of Barcelona and sold to Juventus, in a swap deal with Pjanic. Turin wasn’t a safe haven for him either, and he was once again told to find a new club just two years later, thus being sent on loan at Liverpool.
Since joining Liverpool, Arthur has played more minutes for their U21 side than he has for the first team. So what’s happening here? Injuries have reared their head with multiple surgeries for the Brazilian midfielder, but performances over the last 3 years have some questioning where he is best fit.

arthur was never a right player for us to begin with. not shocking at all if he weren't picked by klopp as while he is quite a press resistant player, so we have it in thiago and jones. the main problem is arthur has never played in a high intensity game before with Barca and Juventus like how PL teams does. Moreover, he isn't a player who is suited to play a high pressing game. i am just as baffled with other lads when we heard about the signing of arthur in loan.

My main issue with Arthur at Barca was that he never ever took any risks, never played through balls and rarely took shots.. he just passed sideways and backwards all the time.

He’s one of these dudes that would be a good regista. Similar to Jorginho. Can control the tempo, is able to be the heartbeat of the team, able to control possession effortlessly, but don’t expect them to get into attacking spaces or to make a good amount of creative chances. That’s one thing that for me, a huge Jorgi fan, frustrated me with him. One dimensional is the only way to put it. I loved tho when Jorgi would say f it, and take that risk and pass long balls, and then they end up beautifully done. It always made me think, ok why not go for MORE of those? But, I think he understood his role tactically and no coach really challenged him to do so. Arthur can still salvage his career to be more than one dimensional, but I doubt it goes anymore than what he already knows. I’m praying that he finds a coach that will trust him in their project, and will utilize him perfectly and take him under his wing

Moral of the story: Don't brand young footballers as the "next this" or the "next that". Let their careers evolve according to their abilities, discipline, fitness and career decisions. Lables and hype on footballers usually turn toxic.

Back then I was so angry that the club sold Arthur for Pjianic. But in the long run, if that hadn't happened, we probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to see Pedri and Gavi shine. And btw, he was "the next Xavi" not "the next Iniesta". Xavi himself called him his successor.

Arthur Melo os no next Xavi no Iniesta. He is more like a Busquest. When he was 21, 22 his mobility was already like 34 plus Busquest. Thus he played standstill. His football is 'keeping procession'. He stood in the midfield circle or ten metres ahead. And he keeps passing short passes 360 degree. And receives passes from his teammates and to pass again again again and again. No threat at all. No contribution to the game. Purely keeping procession only.

@@giornogiovanna845 Yes. Because it is pocession "based" and not pocession "only". Your pocession has purposes and you want to get something out of it. Arthur Melo's case is that it is only pocession and you cannot get anything out of it. Melo cannot assist. Thus the team needs another midfielder to do the assist. Melo at least needs to pass a good ball to the assister so that the assist player can make the pass. Sorry, Melo cannot do that. If you want to assist, you need to come to Melo to collect the ball, dribble it forward and make the pass. That's why teams have abandoned him.

I feel bad for him, to be honest. I know him refusing to play in the CL for Barca puts him in a bad light, but other than that I feel like he has a good attitude and is willing to improve. I liked Arthur at Barca early days and he showed signs of promise and I still believe there is time for him to demonstrate his qualities but the sad reality is that maybe he wasn’t ever destined for the absolute top. Could probably do a good job for a mid table side but sides like Barca, Juve and Liverpool are too much for him and given that he was there when all 3 sides were struggling in some capacity, it doesn’t help his case.
@kirbaimovic

Arthur wasn't talked a lot here in Brazil because the media was not from our state, the media only talks of boys like Endrick because Palmeiras is from São Paulo (together with Rio de Janeiro, these two are the center of the media here), but here in south, he was seen as a great player

Well, based on what I've seen of him on Gremio I always thought he would be a better fit for the Busquets role, not Xavi or Iniesta. He wasn't the final pass guy, he defended well and he could handle beeing pressured without loosing posession, he was always the guy the would get the ball from the defense to the more creative players up front. Odly enough, all the promissing players from that Gremio generation kinda vanished. Most notably Arthur and Luan.

He was so so so good in that first season even Messi said to him he was the surprise of the season. Then that move to Juve his injuries and his lack of the final ball ( which we all expected to improve ) never improving. I think all of this contributed to hiss ultimate demise.

He had a lot of potential, but the incredibly suspicious swap deal killed his career. Arthur is a methodical passer, which meant he fitted in perfectly in Barcelona’s midfield and formation. At Juventus, he was unused and when he was bought by Liverpool eventually, it looked all but over; he was never a big presser and so barely made a whisper of an effect.

a lot of young, hyped players end up like this, out of favour and out of form at big clubs. there are literally hundreds of clubs who would sign him in a heartbeat and take a chance that he could become their top man, but he'd be taking a drop in wages and size/glamour of the club, even though he'd still be earning a fortune by most people's standards and pursuing a dream career. it often comes down to whether they want to play, or just get paid.

Alot of people use Ronaldo as an example of hard work, but the reality is Arthur is a much better example. He always worked hard, sacrificed his time and money to be better and never gave up. But we are always limited in one way or another, and Arthur was just a normal guy that worked really hard, has played in some of the biggest clubs in the world, and by no means was his career a failure, but his instincts and body just cant handle it at the top level. Arthur is another example of pundits/ commentators imagining better performances than what they actually saw. I remember his first season for Barcelona he played against Spurs and put in a bang average performance playing safety passes, no risks taken, nothing bad but certainly nothing special. The BT sports pundits were frothing at the mouth about how Barca had apparently unearthed another gem. They do it all the time, Renato Sanches at Euro 16 being another notable example. It seems if an unknown midfielder comes in and does an unremarkable job at the level of a Tom Cleverley then the world of football just assumes he's a nailed on future superstar.

Feel a bit sorry for him. As a Liverpool fan I wanted to see more but Liverpool’s system can take time to adapt to, so a loan player is going to struggle. Klopp was always going to stick with players already well drilled in the system, not risk playing someone not used to it and, with him being a loan player, there was no reason to invest too many minutes into him like they did with Carvalho, Jones, Eliot - the future. If he’d perhaps shown more in training (not saying he was bad but someone who’s great will force the manager to play him) whereby Klopp decided to make his loan permanent, he’d have invested more minutes into him. Klopp, for whatever reason, probably decided early that he wasn’t going to turn the loan permanent.

The fact he was okay with playing for the u21 and requested more matches with them tells you all you need to know. He was just a young player who was compared to titans of the game, got unlucky with an injury and got stuck in the cycle constant injury after injury. To put him in the same sentence as Iniesta is an insult to football. Was never a great player, overrated af. Doesnt have a technique good enough for the big clubs, lacks a range of passing, low concentration, too slow to be a succesfull regista. At best he will be a first team player for a midtable team. Gremio hyped him up so much it blindsided everyone and a desperate Barca at the time fell for the bait. It didnt take them long to realize he is nowhere near the hype that surrounded him. Just another Pepe.

His technique isn't bad, it's everything else. He has the ability to play through balls like Xavi but lacks the vision to actually do it. He is lacking mentally and physically, which prevents him from utilizing his technical ability

Wdym, he was amazing at Barca, so much potential. Did you even watch his games? Not exactly Iniesta level, but slotted right into the team like he always belonged there.

Actually Arthur had XAVI as inspiration not Iniesta. And yes… he didnt deliver since he left Gremuo

I think the nature of player he is - namely someone who likes to dictate the tempo of the game in the Xavi role - means that Arthur can never really excel in a dysfunctional side; and funnily enough, the word "dysfunctional" perfectly sums up Barca, Juve and Liverpool in his respective times at those clubs...

The main issue is big clubs buying South American players thinking they’ll make an impact WITHOUT the adaptation to the European culture or to the European game. There’s a reason those that go to Portugal or Neatherlands first are more successful.
