"Good-bye, Norma Jean" was a huge hit back in the day by Elton John... the actual Title was 'A Candle in the Wind', but it became pretty well known by the intro line. It celebrated the life, and mourned the young death, of an American Icon, Movie Star and Sex Symbol. It also took a shot at Media... so in a small way Elton compares Monroe to Princess Diana where the death was surrounded and hounded by Media in an often distasteful way. The line "Even when you died, the press still hounded you. All the papers had to say was Marilyn was found in the nude." And oh, would you look... in America we're at an all-time high for Distrust with the Media. So in an off-beat way, Em just tied in Elton John (paying homage to a Legend) and Princess Diana all to take a swipe at Modern Media in America. Now, to be fair, this could all be coincidence. But if fits pretty snugly.

I am pretty confident in my other break downs... but let me give one more that is a reach. So I stated he paid homage to Elton John, nicely tucked into his Norma Jean reference... which expands that bar to be a slight towards the media. Elton John was a musical star. At the end, he bites the head off a bat. A fan had thrown a real bat on stage at a concert... and Ozzy Osborne thought it was a fake bat so he bit the head off of it live on stage mid-concert. This is one of those iconic Rock moments that has grown to Myth and Legend... and Em ends his video with this scene. Edit: Okay, so what he ACTUALLY ends the video with is two white doors. The Doors. Without even saying a line, he gets a 3rd reference of Rock into the song. The Doors were known for vivid lyrics... Em is known as a master of lyrics. It's POSSIBLE that Em referenced Elton John in lyric through referencing "Goodbye, Norma Jean" (Candle in the Wind)... and VISUALLY gave a shout to both Ozzy Osborne and Jimmy Morrison. Now... what do all three of these men have in common?
