@@o.i.c.uvanish9169 It's not frustration, it's the realization and recognition of the plethora of deep rooted shortcomings of the human race. You can still be compassionate and warm to individual people, all of us whom had no choice in being human or born to this earth, while still recognizing that the human race is not the best thing that ever happened to this planet or that in fact happened to each other. The worst experiences most people have ever had came from other people. If anyone personally feels offended by anything in this human commentary it could be because we all have some of these shortcomings and that was George's point, that if we were all a little less mean, selfish, and high on ourselves the world could have been a better place.

I think the reason that the "phone mime" went out fashion is that rotary phones were still largely in use at this time and now are an endangered species.

What George was getting at is that every human, I suspect including himself, would be on this list. The last line about explaining ourselves to an intergalactic master intelligence shows this and tied it all together. If any personal offence is taken to any of the content then agreed it reveals yourself to still being somewhat blind to your own humanness and faults, and resistant to seeing the human race for what it really is.

I get what you're saying. His comedy changed a lot over the years, going through different eras when he concentrated on different themes. As he got older, he saw how people basically didn't change, and it frustrated him. The promise of the times when he first got popular never panned out, so he went with that theme of "people are basically crap so who cares". At this time, he was saying things a hell of a lot of people agreed with but couldn't say in their own lives, so his comedy was cathartic - he complained for all of us. Times are different now and everyone in the world has a megaphone, so the idea of someone complaining for us is kind of passe. :)

My fav bit from George is the Football vs baseball. It's incredibly witty and funny. Not sure if Bars and Barbells have done it, but it's amazing insight and delivery.

George was/is the greatest observer of life, and willing to put that mirror in our face. Witty was his gift, but it didn't seem to reward him as a performer in his later years. Later years George was so much more graphic in his humor, and commentary. I watched him for his whole performing lifetime. His delivery never really changed but is much more hard hitting in his later years. George always spoke for me.

There are a couple of interviews where george talks about going from comedian to observer. Pretty interesting. He was prophetic, but it is different than his older stuff. I still feel Carlin and Richard Pryor were the best of that generation of comedians.

I saw George live three times. He did get darker and angrier with the passage of time. I think after decades after trying to get his message out, he got frustrated that nothing was changing. Time has certainly passed on this particular material with changes in technology. The phone mime thing, the headset phone, the answering machine...I can only say, ya had to be there.

By this point in his career, George had pretty much reached a place where he felt he had done all the clever and witty stuff that he could have done as a more fun, cheerful comedian from his early days, as censorship, corporate ownership and modern extremism started to truly take hold of American life, and so he started doing this kind of material to not only tap into his own frustrations, but also kind of educate people and make them really aware of how absurd our society had become and the direction it was heading. He wasn’t getting anything out of our culture to fuel the material he did in his early days anymore, and he felt it was more important, for himself and his fans, to start speaking more honestly about his dissatisfaction with the whole system and get laughs through that, rather than just try to go for laughs alone.

People like to comment on George Carlin videos something like, "imagine what he would have to say about how things are today." This is a pet peeve of mine. The powerful interests who want to keep us divided and under their control always tell us that "fill in the blank" is worse than it was in the recent past, because then they can tell us who we should blame for that. I'm old enough (54) to have learned that thinking "the kids today aren't as good as we were" is the first step on the path to becoming a frightened and gullible old person who has lost the ability to think for himself/herself.

One of the lessons he’s given here is that we all take ourselves too seriously. He’s talking about minor annoyances that we see in our everyday life. And, the extreme approach is just an exaggeration of how we personally respond to this stuff.

I'm a fan of George, I saw this performance years ago. I'm familiar with the things he's expressing here. More relevant then, than now. As a fan of George, I noticed a change in him in his final days. After the Supreme Court of the United States used his monologue of the "8 words you can't say on TV" as a precedent, he became more political and cynical. He will always be a legend in my heart, but I understand your position and I respect your opinion. Rewatching it here with you today I fully understand your opinion and I also agree that he was a bit extreme for today. But then... It was cutting edge.

The one I used to have had two cassette tapes, one for the outgoing message and the other for incoming messages. The incoming message tape was a normal cassette tape, the other looked normal, but just had a loop of tape so that the message repeated over and over if you played it in a regular cassette tape deck. That tape was where you recorded your message for incoming calls.

My big complaint is how in the last 15 - 20 years parents and the schools have to make it now a “ graduation “ every year now in the school education! My child is “ graduating “ from Kindergarten “. Then they gave a ceremony at the school Or my child is graduating from 5th grade this year ! It’s pathetic that we now have to coddle kids do much by having to make a huge deal of just attending school every year ! There is only two real graduations in a person’s life …. The completion of grade 12 or senior year in High School and your completion of whatever college degree you might of went for as a young adult. All other years of completion and moving on to the next year is not a graduation it’s another step completed in your quest of graduation after 12 years of school.

Years ago the earbud with the chord came out and only a few self-important types had them. They would talk very loud to make sure you saw them. Very annoying in the bank or grocery lines. This is who I believe George is referring to. And yes, many people would have their children record the voicemail message. 💚🤙🏼

Carlin was utilizing super raw humor which was more funny and accepted at the time. And as you noticed he got more into the grumpy old man as he got older. This was an evolution of him not only personally, but also went in hand with the journey his audience and fans had been on with him, many of whom followed him for decades. He kept ramping up the intensity and himself and the crowd collectively were getting more and more pissed and annoyed as the worls seemed to get worse and worse in a lot of ways(sorry for the pessimism , there). The phone hand thing was a thing in our culture for a long time due to land line phones. When blue tooth phone earpieces first came out they were flaunted shamelessly and ostentatiously by the first wave of users. Glad to hear you guys always be honest in your reaction. Please never change on that. Great vid!

George was great, and I still find this routine funny. But I think you're correct that this isn't as funny as his earlier stuff. By this time in his career he was leaning harder on the social commentary more than the comedy part. It's not that it was bad, it was just not as good as other stuff.

Well that was an unfortunate colision of high grumpy old man factor (even for Carlin) and some time specific material which has not aged very well. I promise, it is pretty funny if you are old enough to recall when these references were more of a commentary on the current state of things. Try his 80s stuff like “losing things”, “sports”, “driving”, “dogs and cats”, “hello and goodbye”. He has a different energy than either his 70s or his more recent stuff. It my personal favorite time period of his.

Carlin, like every comedian, had an arc. He started out a very conservative guy wearing suits. Then, he grew his hair out and became the hippy dippy weatherman as the times changed. He did a lot of drugs humor and then got into language and words. He crafted a lot of bits around everyday things people could relate to like sports, driving, flying. Then, as times continued to change, he started talking about war and politics. His later, angry rants simply were a product of the times and his natural progression as a comic. I started watching him on HBO in the early 80s (my favorite decade of his) all the way to his death. I changed along with him but I do agree with you that his angrier stuff is not as lol funny. It was necessary though. He had to get it off his chest. RIP George.

George Carlin was at the top of my list of favorites. He brings it every time. (I do get what you were saying about this one not so good).. I think you have done .. Abbott and Costello "Who's On First" .. which is a classic. One of the old time ones I like is ....Victor Borge and The Opera Singer ... and others. He is a classically trained pianist and comedian.

George had multiple phases of his comedy, this is his later stuff, I'd guess most likely from the 90s. The other ones you did were from the 70s and 80s. His best material definitely is from the 60s, 70s and 80s. If you haven't seen it yet I'd suggest his piece on airline travel and flight security. It's pacing is perfect IMHO and the comedy itself is original and gold. It's pure parody. Oh, and I lived through most of what he described (including the phone call hand motions) and they were just as painful to experience as he described.

Though I don’t often agree with his politics or views on religion, he’s still the GOAT. You need to do some stuff off of his old albums. Such classic bits. Agreed that his later stuff can be like this bit. Listen to the albums AM & FM, Take Offs and Put Ons, and Class Clown.

It's not one of his better pieces. However, this video is isolated from his 2001 HBO Special "Complaints & Grievances", which aired two months after 9/11. It was originally slated to air in September, titled "I Kind Of Like It When A Lot Of People Die", but obviously changes needed to be made. When I first saw C&G, I felt like he was leading some sort cathartic mass rant. I laughed my ass off all the way through it.

I love George Carlin & I love Steely Dan! And a lot of music he insults 😆 Sometimes George exaggerated 😅. He did that to make it funny or make a point You take it too seriously

This is one of my favorite Carlin bits, but only because of the very end. How self important we are and the ugly side of humanity. Then think back to all the vile things he said earlier, (the brutal killings, the disturbing voice mail), and realize that we laughed at that stuff. Intentional or not, he exposed us. Bars seemed to be disgusted by just about the whole thing. Good for her. She wins.

Nope, she LOSES. Anyone too self-righteous disingenuous or goody too-shoes to see the TRUTH in his humor will ALWAYS lose. The "disgusting" stuff was HYSTERICAL! One of the funniest parts of the bit. Cuz back then people weren't braindead to think he was actually encouraging killing people or hurting kids.
