No hard feelings anyone that's levelled this one of me, as yes I do agree that it did need addressing.
So: yes: I am usually far too nice to Classic Who and harsher on nu-who. Yes, you are correct people that have said this.
So to redress the balance somewhat - I'm gonna kick the shit out of a Classic Who story that totally deserves it and follow up with a positive review of an episode featuring the 10th Doctor that I happen to really like. Just to confuse the shit out of you :)

Timeflight sort of makes me feel guilty. When it aired, I was away from home at a University open day, so jokingly asked my parents to watch Doctor Who and tell me what happened. _And they did._ Sorry..

Perfect clip at 8:12 of Davison trying not to laugh at the Master's of "frog nah heem!" I think they knew at the time this episode was just not going to work. Great point about Ainley, he was the perfect choice to replace Delgado. Really great analysis of this story, thank you!

Whenever someone brings up Doctor Who episodes with concepts too big I think of "The Lodger". While that episode has essentially become the poster child of budget saving episodes, the first draft had a flying car in it. Moffatt responded with a note reading, _You do know we have to make thirteen episodes, not one?_

I rewatched it a few years ago and it's amazingly bad. The final episode of the final story of the season and it has moments of high drama like the plane crew standing around tightening nuts and bolts on the plane! You're right , no amount of money would've made this script good, although it is strange to think that Grimwade was a very good Doctor Who director but seemed to massively misjudge what would work on screen.

I enjoyed the story, and the concept - it was almost a precursor to Avatar but with less money than James Cameron would spend on a new pair of socks. The dialogue of the humans was very Victorian, you could almost hear Simon Rouse thinking out loud, "For fuck's sake, what am I doing here? Isn't The Bill starting yet?"

Interesting, so I'm guessing it's not a Moffat one like blink. I'm hoping your going to surprise us with an RTD story like midnight or maybe waters of Mars. Both of which were excellent stories in my opinion. Actually on second thoughts I think it's love and monsters. You've secretly loved it all this time and you can't go on lying to the world about your true feelings for it. 😄 only joking.

I'm going to guess something that doesn't get talked about a lot. Something like The Sontaran Stratagem or 42. Or maybe Turn Left, seeing as it's pretty much 45 minutes of Donna.

+Russell Tietjen that's a good suggestion, I really liked turn left. I know it's not really for everyone but I'm surprised it's been pretty much forgotten by so many. Planet of the ood is another good story that I never hear mentioned on lists from the tenth doctors era but maybe it's just me that likes that one. I tend to favour stories that are futuristic or set on alien worlds.

I'm shocked that you didn't compare Davison's response to going back in time to save Adric to the end of the Angels Take Manhattan. That was the first thing I thought of when I heard Smith say he couldn't go back in time to get the Ponds.

5:47 - P-Peter? Are you OK? And, yes. Completely agree on all points. Grimwade is a great director, but he was pretty bad at writing for Doctor Who. Also, Master was really bad in Time-Flight. His plan was stupid, not-racist-enough-to-be-banned costume is bad even by Master's standards and Ainley, while not bad in the role, clearly doesn't like what he has being given.

What I find annoying about the current overuse of the sonic screwdriver (BLOODY SERIES 5!) is that the Davies Era brought in a thing to stop the Sonic Screwdriver being the solution to every problem - the deadlock seal. With this, now stuff like doors and computers to be scanned can be sorted easily, but the sonic would be completely useless at solving the plot. What happened to the deadlock seal? Are they ever mentioned after Series 4?

The way I see Time Flight is that it sort of needed to happen. This is Doctor Who, not Game of Thrones. You can't just end the season on such a downer, where one of the companions dies, especially one, who, to some like myself, was much loved. My memory of this story, though before watching this review was that it was actually pretty good. Until I watched review, yeah I agree it's a complete mess, and I understand where you come from when you say it needed 80,000,000 rewrites :)

Time Flight coming after Earthshock is literally like if you were presented with a fancy cake that the chef poured his heart out into making it look beautiful and the taste you can just imagine is the best cake you’ve ever had, and then the chef drops trou and proceeds to fart all over the cake.

I mean it's a guilty pleasure of mine but I do wonder if they where worried people didn't like Adric and so wouldn't have enjoyed it if it had went on about him too much. I do wonder what they should have done e.g. had the companions questioning if the doctor cared and being short with him all the episode?

Seems to be a trend with some bad companions. Maybe their deaths are supposed to.make us reflect on whether the hatred was justified. When Romana and a K9 left, we got Adric as a memento of the events. When Amy and Rory were tragically ripped from the doctor as well as following Victorian Clara's death, we get a companion who was dragged in because of plot. Coincidence?

I liked this at the time, but in my defence, it has Concorde in it and I was just nine years old. I recently watched it again, and I found the novellisation by Chris Bidmead in my parents' attic. I can almost forgive it the unanswered technical questions like how a police box fits into and pulls a 90 degree turn in Concorde's lower baggage hold, which is about 6.5m3? And how they landed Concorde on prehistoric Earth with nothing even remotely resembling a runway and took off again; I can even smile at the end credits of episode 1 listing Leon Ny Taiy (an anagram of Tony Ainley) because they weren't ready to reveal the Master until episode 2; but what I really struggle with is the attitudes of some of the characters (and, by association, the writing and production teams) because I don't remember the 80s being as bad as they obviously were. The professor is a patronising, public school prick that would give Jacob Rees Mogg a warm, fuzzy glow, most of the pilots exhibit sexism that wouldn't be out of place twenty years earlier; and Kalid's cod Chinese mumblings (in Bidmead's novel, he actually refers to him looking Chinese, even though the make-up Ainley wore looked more like Gollum from LOTR) - this is an even worse Chinese stereotype than The Talons of Weng Chiang almost a decade before. Oh, and by the way, Adric deserved little sympathy, for a supposedly teenaged character intended for the younger audience to identify with, he displayed a level of misogynism that my late grandfather would have baulked at. How Tegan never planted the little sod I'll never know...
@WayneSpillett
@WayneSpillett 4 жыл бұрын
@@sadako24 All good points. With regard to Adric's death, I suspect the reference at the beginning of Time Flight was there to explain his absence to anyone who might not have caught the last episode of Earthshock, which did pay sufficient respect to the character by its silent credits rolling over his broken badge. Time Flight could have started afresh without these scenes and given a few valuable extra seconds to the plot. I agree with you mostly on the female characters. Sarah-Jane was brave but was still sometimes the archetypal screamer. Leela was excellently played by Louise Jameson, it was easy to believe she thought she had to protect the doctor rather than vice versa. Mary Tamm's Romana lacked personality, but Lalla Ward rescued the character. Tegan and Nyssa were good characters, and we'll played by their respective actresses, but definitely let down by the scripts. I only recently learned from an old interview with Sarah Sutton that she was only 19 when she landed the role, and knowing that gives some credence to the apparent naive weakness of Nyssa. Janet Fielding wasn't acting much, she really is the "mouth on legs" that she calls Tegan in real life, and she fought against a lot of the misogyny. Interviewed about filming The Five Doctors, she recalled insisting that Tegan wouldn't stand for being sent to make the tea just because she was female, and so the script was changed to have Turlogh sent to help her! JNT ought to have known better than to be so blasé about the misogyny because, as a gay man he should have been familiar with discrimination. In criticising her wardrobe on the show, Fielding called him "The only gay man I ever met with absolutely no clue about fashion".

It is weird that this episode doesn't get the same criticism that talons get. Is it because it's so bad people just let it off or is it because people forget about it rather than talons that is often ranked high
