@@MissTomi I mean, her costume is borderline on Colin Baker's costume but I just liked the exchange between her and Lord Byron. If you look back, even to Paul McGann's TV movie, the doctor has had his fair share of flirty remarks and joked about partners. The Doctor's a Lady's Man in his eight, ninth, tenth and eleventh incarnations with Ten even having his 'Pretty Boy' status. Now the Doctor is a woman and has a younger body than Twelve, I felt it was only right to make a remark or two about it in some flirty jokes. I'm not asking for much, I just liked the exchange and am happy Chipnall (though I hate Chipnall) is finally addressing the fact that the Doctor is indeed a woman now and so should include some jokes, like the running joke about Eleven's chin and Twelve's eyebrows.

Yeah, I did enjoy that. It would've been better if the Doctor was just a bit more receptive to it rather than being completely disgusted because "she is a woman and women hate when men flirt with them. That's called cat-calling, and cat-calling is wrong." I mean, I would be flattered if a historical figure like that hit on me.

Well, this is what the Wiki says on this matter: "It offered an alternate account of the conception of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley to that of the audio story Mary's Story featuring the Eighth Doctor, though with the story acknowledging that what it was depicting was the result of history becoming unusually flexible around that night." So, because the Cyberium was sent back in time to 1816 by Ko Sharmus, that already changed history for the Shelleys. The Eighth Doctor stuff just happened before history was changed.

I like the trope that developed of Jodie's Doc announcing to the companions prepare to witness greatness from historical figure only in both cases to come across them at their worst moments, in Tesla's case an empty room and a man on the verge of bankruptcy and in Mary Shelly and Byron's case a swinger's evening undermining their respect as great writers. I want to see this continue as a defining trait of 13's run as its a new spin on the Doc and historical figure theme that surprisingly in 50 years of show nobody has ever thought to do.

The odd funny thing about Frankenstein monster being inspired by a hideous monster is that Frankenstein monster was describe as beautiful except for being giant and having weird yellow eyes in the book. Also Victor Frankenstein love interest/adopted sister Elizabeth was describe a beautiful blonde that makes poems about the beauty of the world. It would have been hilarious if there was a joke about the 13th Doctor inspiring that charter.

I really think the supporting cast should've just been randos in the 1800s. The fact that 8's adventures with Mary Shelley aren't referenced at all implicitly decanonises them and I hate that, especially because the supporting cast being these specific people adds little to the story. Furthermore, the host of the Cyberium being some nobody would drive home the argument of one life vs a million. The Doctor shouldn't give in because Shelley was a famous dude who inspired people, but because this one person has life, making them worth saving as much as any famous figure, and beyond that allowing the Cyberium host to be killed would go against the promise of the name of the Doctor. It would be the cowards way out. We didn't need Shelley and co in this episode, the premise of the plot alone would've sold me just fine.

This episode was probably the high point of Whitaker's time as the Doctor, and it was definitely downhill all the way for the next two episodes. Speaking of looking at the origins of horror writing, what do people think of H.P Lovecraft poping up in a Doctor Who episode? I've tried playing it out in my head for a while, Lovecraft would probably have a hard time not seeing the Doctor as anything other than an eldritch monster; and I've always thought the Great Race of Yith from The Shadow Out of Time would be perfect as Doctor Who villains.

I have some questions about the show for you. I stopped watching the show at “Hell Bent” so i miss your He who moans reviews. That episode felt like the writing was on the wall for me as far as the integrity of the show was concerned. I’ve been rewatching New Who and I’m now on series 8 and running into the same problems I faced then. Is Doctor who worth returning to? Would it be better if the show got cancelled and/or certain aspects retconned? How would you fix the trajectory of the show if you were showrunner or if you could recommend new writing staff? Is there a cutoff point before you call it a day?

Most of the problems with Hell Bent are forgettable. It barely impacted Season 10.
@cjmcc5231
@cjmcc5231 4 жыл бұрын
raydarable The return of Gallifrey was important for 2 big reasons Firstly, it was really important for the Doctor’s overarching character arc. The Doctor stole the TARDIS to explore the universe as the first Doctor. However, it was only after his travels that he realised his perceived duty of responsibility to help the universe. He extends this belief and accuses the time lords of their failure to do so in his trial (the episode where the Doctor is fully realised as a character imo) and is exiled as a result. Thus establishes the Doctor’s antagonistic relationship with his people which lasts throughout the classic era. However, then the time war happens and it changes his perspective on his people after centuries of guilt and mourning. Then he realises that he was Gallifrey’s saviour and this completely recontextualises his relationship with them- not as an outcast but as a hero. The expectation and the set up for his return to Gallifrey is that he wants to forge a new and different relationship with his people and become more involved in the affairs of his planet. Yet this is betrayed (with nowhere for his character to logically progress) when he ignores this to just return to his life pre-timewar and scoot around the universe as if the last millennia of his life meant nought. Secondly, the return of Gallifrey would have given the show adequate structure and story progression if handled to its maximum potential. Several seasons should have been dedicated to the search for Gallifrey. Then seasons could have been spent dealing with the immediate problems faced upon its return. Lastly dealing with the legacy of Gallifrey’s return. Gallifrey and the Doctor’s relationship has always been the spine of Doctor Who imo (none more so than New Who) and the fact that they undercut its return in Hell Bent meant that the show was in free fall.
@raydarable
@raydarable 4 жыл бұрын

Huzzah! Finally a critical review worth watching in the fandom! Most other channels I watch just appear to want to shit on Chibnall and all this series stands for, so it's really nice not see someone ree down their microphone and talk about how Chibbers killed Doctor Who (Personally I find that Moffat did that a while ago, I enjoy Chibbers trying to reign in on Moffats wild years imo). My only critique was the more 'human side' of the Cyberman in this episode, I personally disliked how he was always angry all the time and wanted just everything to die. I feel there was potential to make him a truly tortured character, but he just comes off as a Dalek in a Cyber-body. If I were to write the character I would have made him into a bit of an arsehole but that's because he would have been in permanent pain from being only semi-converted. I wouldn't have made him a killer but more a character who tells the story of his life and how he is sentient but because of the Cyber-programming he gets no option but to follow the orders of Cyber Control. He knows what he's doing but is constantly conflicted on how he should feel, he signed up for the procedure still but because he's now seen what happens to those who refuse to convert, with all the programming stuck in his mind he doesn't know weather what he is doing is right or wrong. I feel if the episode took him in this light then it would tie-in a lot better with the Frankenstein inspiration.

Maybe its the finale clouding my judgement but this was a waste of an episode. Even forgoing the 8th Doctor stuff I liked the initial haunted house feel as rooms changed on a dime, Graham was seeing ghosts and the fact that it provided a very trippy atmosphere which had the companions disoriented and trying desperately to make sense out of chaos. Everything fell apart with the return of the Cyberman with anger issues being a generic "GRRRR! I AM THE MONSTER!!! GIMME PLOT DEVICE PLZ" growling all over the place and kinda feeling like a slap in the face compared to World Enough and Time. To me the Cybermen just don't really work as generic evil robot man who wants to take over the universe if they don't have the body horror to back it up and without spoiling anything I had higher hopes for the Cyberium being something of a next evolution for mass Cyber-conversion than what the episode gave us And for something involving Mary Shelley I was kinda expecting something a little more macabre than half face Cyberman with RAGE issues (thinking that it was gonna tie in with that whole irish cop thing in the next episode) but quite clearly that wasn't the case. For all my disappointments I was at least hoping to find out how Captain Barrowman found out about the lone Cyberman but that went nowhere so ultimately this episode had a great start and a decent ending... But knowing what happens ahead of time it kneecaps this episode's rewatchability knowing what it squandered and how disappointing the episodes to come are going to be.

I really don’t like the Lone Cyberman, it undercuts the main theme of the Cybermen that separates them from the Daleks, they’re not evil robots, they think they’re benevolent they think they’re doing the right thing by upgrading people. That’s also why I never got behind the “delete” catchphrase. The cybermen are really easy to f*ck up, RTD did it, Moffat did it most of the time bar the season 10 finale, and now Chibnall’s done it, but Chibnall’s f*cked everything else where at least the other two got mostly everything else right.
