Compare a flail mower vs a brush hog vs a finish mower. It's no secret we love flail mowers. We sell a ton every year from Italy's Del Morino. There are so many advantages to a flail mower over a finish mower or a brush hog, but that doesn't mean it's the perfect solution for everyone. Still, we'll cover why we think it's the best of the bunch.

Purchased the 62" Del Morino Funny Top Flail Mower with Y blades a year ago and have not regretted it for a second. More expensive than the others, yes. But I also have a brush hog that I've only used once since buying the flail mower. We use the flail mower for finish cut mowing roughly 4 acres of meadowgrass/lawn as well as knocking down a lot of taller weeds and smaller woody material. It's also compact enough that I usually just leave it installed as a ballast weight when moving material with the bucket.

Bought a 62” Woodmaxx flail mower with hydraulic side shift function. I got the Y-blade option on it. Totally agree that it does both functions well. It knocks off about 20% of the time with my new Bobcat CT2025 that my old Kubota BX’s mid mount mower took, too.

My first experience with a flail mower was in 1970, we had one at my first job. Have not seen one for many years, so when I purchased my 3025E (I didn't want a belly mower, so cheaper than the 1025R) I included a finish mower in the package. With 12 acres to keep cut, the Funny Top was a game changer. The finish mower has been buried in the corner since, not sure when or if it might be back in service again.

I have a 5’ brush hog that I used to help clear heavy brush and such along my fenceline as it reaches back further than the 62” Del Marino I own with Y blades. I wish you could include photos as I use the flail mower to cut my yard and it looks great with that! Another unspoken advantage is the flail mower seems so much quieter than the brush hog at working speeds. I didn’t want a Z-turn to mow my lawn as I’m retired and seat time on my tractor is therapy as my wife says!

That Top Link attachment that flips around on the finish mower is for “Independent Float” of the mower from the tractor as it oscillates over uneven ground. The lower pins can be locked into place to limit some of the excess movement or you can get the quick hitch attachment that further locks the mower into place but gives u the fire and aft movement. I have all 3 (rotary cutter, flail mower, finish mower) with most of my use coming from the flail or finish mower.

Courtney's available to answer questions (tractor model, hydraulic setup, etc) and that helps to prevent you from buying something that may not be right sized for your machine. His help also saved me about a thousand dollars. Awesome support after the sale also. First impression of the product is its very robustly built and does a super job on tall grass and saplings. Extremely easy to unpack and set up on my 2038R. I did it completely by myself in about 1 hour start to finish. I have other attachments to buy and will definitely be shopping here.

I have a 4ft bush hog and a 5ft finish mower both are about 30 years old. Finish mower is my preferred way to cut grass vs a belly mower. I grew up with a finish mower and I like that the noise, dust and pollen are behind you. That being said I don't have any experience with a flail, I want one so bad I can taste it, but I have watched enough videos that personally a flail is the only way to go because of the versatility

I think it has more to do with your conditions. I brushed and limbed about 18 of my 21 acres which left a ton of branch material on the ground. I have a finish mower but it was apparent to me that I’d destroy it if I tried to use it in these conditions. I let the material dry out for a year and then hit it with a flail mower. The hammers on the flail mower pulverize the branches. Works great.

If mowing for a fire break/ fuel reduction measures, as our local council requires every pre summer/ fire restriction time frame, the fact that a flail mower leaves noticeably less buildup of cut grass is a bonus, the cut material is sometimes as greater risk as anything else. Longer-term benefits of the mulching action of a flail mowers should also be considered.

I am looking at picking up a sub-compact tractor here soon and wanting to pickup a mowing system for it to replace my aging zero turn that is slowly falling apart. Property is about 3 acres mostly grass so finish mower is top, but would a flail mower with appropriate blades actually give a good level of cut to use it in place of finish mower, while being able to swap to hammer style for rougher area's to clear them. Not looking for golf course quality, but decent consistent cuts

Talk about crazy coincidences. Just this week I used my finish mower to brush-hog a neighbor's 3 acre lot because the guy who does it for them twice a year was sidelined by an injury. Fortunately it was only tall grass but even that was pushing the limits of my equipment. Not enough side hustle opportunities within safe tractor-driving distance to justify buying a brush hog but if I can replace my junky old finish mower with a flail that can also brush hog... gonna have to talk to the finance committee.

From Europe, originally, but going back to finish mower from flail. Maintenance costs, buy in price, complexity of maintenance, part costs, are much lower with a finish mower. Besides that: a flail with chip/shred the pieces of grass which makes raking more difficult. You also need less power with a finish mower. Fuel is the most costly in our business, besides labour and my time. Even mowing a little bit more per season, the fuel I save is astonishing. And a better result. And...If you want hay/straw and easy raking and pick up in a grass cart, a flail ain't for you. The pieces are to small. Cattle don't like it and mulch for gardening: you don't want the mulch to compost to fast. And, on the front I can run a mower, and on the three point, offset, as well. Twice the speed. On less rpm , read fuel consumption, then 1 flail. And I save valuable time. The finish mower can be in the same angles as the flail mowers. That being said: we only have the grassy things here.

I do have all 3. A 6' brush hog, 6' finish mower and 2 6' flail mowers. One flail is a rough cut John Deere 25A and a Mott mower with finish cut knives. I use my Ford 4000 for mowing and it handles all the mowers with ease. I do like the flail mowers for almost every cutting job but for very heavy cutting, or cutting where you need to back into the cut I do prefer the brush hog. For mowing the 3 acres around my home I do like the finish mower best. But for cutting the pasture fields the flail mower wins hands down. If you don't have the luxury of owning more than one mower, I'd agree and say pick the flail mower.

Last year we bought a finish mower. It was a choice between a finish mower and flail mower. If I had my time again I’d pay the extra for the flail mower. The grass on my my place grows very high, is coarse and clumpy. It takes time to cut the grass with the finish mower. The main reason for not purchasing the flail mower was cost. Plus I have a nut tree farm and the nuts fall on the ground before harvesting. So I thought the flail mower would crush the nuts, which it would.

I don't know if this is possible for every rotary cutter, but I have a hx15 batwing style mower that my dad put dual blades on. There's a bottom curved one and a top straight blade. It takes a bit more power to run, but it chops up stuff better. It still won't go as low as a flail mower or a finish mower, but it is an option at least on the bigger batwing style mowers. I think John Deere offers this as a kit on the newer models.

I can say there are times when the rotary cutter is better. I have places where you can't drive through and have to back into to cut. These places are just cut 1 or 2 times a year just to keep undergrowth cut down. With these places being between trees and a drop bank on the other side. Now do I want a flail mower that can off set to the side yes, I do. I see where there are many places they would be the best option. With the off set feature fence lines, ditches and pond banks would be easier.

Most finish mowers ride on wheels front and back to maintain a consistent cut height. The geometry of such an arrangement dictates that the upper link be fully slack at all times while in operation. Under tension is not so bad, other than the poor cut height control, under compression and you will destroy the front wheels of the unit. Easiest way to eliminate this is not to use a quick hitch.

With the slip clutch you don’t really know unless you just slipped it. With a pto shear pin you have a lot less chance to damage the equipment! I find it much easier to have a six pin on both ends mower and tractor with the shear nut built-in to the PTO. That way you can easily take off the PTO shaft and put a bucket over the gearbox and store it outside. Plus for those of you who have not slipped the clutch on a brush hog beware it’s not easy. Just saying!
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Definitely less maintenance with a shear bolt too!
@PurpleNovember
@PurpleNovember Жыл бұрын
Sound like you may not have experience with a slip clutch set up correctly. When set up correctly, a slip clutch is easier on the tractor and implement drivetrain because of shock loads The technical knowledge needed to use properly and slightly more maintenance can be a disadvantage for some; especially for light duty, light use applications. Sheer pin connections still need to be cleaned and checked like slip clutches, but is seldom done unless replaced. Nearly all of the pto drivetrain failures I’ve seen are from sheer pin connections not working properly.

Flail mower is better performance, but it's more expensive. And one big point, if hit a big stone or stump hide in the grass, it will only damage the blade of bush hog or the gear box at most, not too much money to fix it compare with flail mower, it will damage the flail mower's rotor balance and has to replace a new rotor which is very expensive.

@JCWren

I notice at 11:22 you have the mower hanging from the top hook, and the pins aren't actually sitting in the bottom of the quick hitch. This might be because you haven't lifted the 3-point up yet, but it looks like the mower is fully engaged on the hook. Regardless, I've seen this before. Shouldn't the weight of any implement be carried on the pins and not the hook? If the implement was attached WITHOUT the quick hitch, the lifting arms are what actually lifts the implement, not the top link. If the implement is on a QH, then a correctly adjusted setup would have the weight on the pins, and the top hook should be snug or have a slight gap, right? There should also be a bushing on the implement's top link pin so there's no front to back play between the top link pin and the hook.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Correct, I probably lengthened the top link a hair to let it settle down or just lowered and raised the 3 point again. It'll fall down in there soon enough. No biggie, it won't stay like that with all the weight, it'll fall down into position after moving around even if I made no more adjustments.

That is only part of it. Adjusting the top link plays a huge roll in cut height.

Can you talk about the different and when to use (or not use) the Y blades vs hammer blades? Also, I have a small apple orchard with grass that I mow. Would a flail mower be a good option with regards to the apples that fall on the ground? (if so which blade type). My rotary mower does not do well with the fallen apples.

FLAIL!

Maintenance on a brush hog is the simplest of all and the best for thick, steamy, woody weeds and grasses. Possibly the flail is best for well maintained pasture (but think about maintaining dozens of hammers). The finish mower, in thick or bumpy pasture, and especially at faster speed, will bounce more and blades will dull quickly which is a great way to break/shred drive delts ($40 each, aftermarket). Match the tool to the application. I have a brush hog and a finish mower. Yes, it would be nice to have a flail. But also, yes, the more varied your tasks, the more $$$ you need to spend to have the right tools.
