Interesting review. I hadn't thought about comparing these knives. Nice job!

Very thorough comparison. First I’m really seeing of the Kapara. I had a 940-2 but I traded it away. Miss it frequently.

Great review. I just ordered the Kapara after your review. I have the 9400 auto by Benchmade and it’s awesome blade as well

Great video! I now have both after picking up the Kapara today locally from Sherpers so I can’t wait to see how I compare them but I feel the same as you on many points you made! Both are awesome knives 🤙🏻👍🏻

I love my 940. I can tell you that a bit of locktight on the pivot will totally get rid of blade play. Any benchmade i ever put a dab of locktight on once tightened to the just free fall degree ended up perfect. Zero blade play and free fall action that will smooth out perfect over time.

Yup 👍. One time I got the blue liquid loctite in the washer somehow . I know now not to leave a drop hanging off the pivot screw 😂. Just the threads is perfect 👍.

I liked the review! They both differ quite a bit though. One you can use and a light weight screwdriver, the other was engineered by Phillips to cut veggies and fruits. I own them both and love them.

Well done, you really covered all the elements for a fair comparison. Both knives accomplish what they set out to do, but I don't disagree with any of your decisions. The kapara is a beautiful piece, while still being able to take on edc tasks with ease. I have the cqi version as well, and it has a very satisfying fidget factor, more so than the 940. Every knife is a little different but I'm totally with you regarding trying to find that fine line with the 940 between getting it drop shutty without any blade play. I haven't been able to get there. Mine doesn't have blade play but I need to give it a little wrist to drop it shut. No such problem with the kapara. When I got mine and closed it the first time, I was like, YES!! Hope you do more side by side comparisons, really enjoy these types of knife videos.

It takes a good long while but my 940 is drop shutty, honestly as much as my Benchmade anthem or my protech Malibu. That said, it's nearly a decade old so it is well worn.

The Kapara is that way out of the box. I ❤️ pivot bushings.

When I bought my Kapara two years ago I was deciding between it and the g10 940. It took me a couple of weeks to decide but in the end I just thought the Kapara looked better. Everything you said about the Kapara is spot on. One thing though, while the Kapara may carry bigger than the 940, it does disappear in the pocket pretty well, especially when compared to some other Spydercos. I enjoyed this comparison.

I can say the blade play has a lot more to do with the lock type than the pivot. The 940 actually has substantially larger washers than the kapara, which uses a smaller surface area, and would actually cause blade play if it depended on that alone. However, because the axis lock uses a bar that doesn’t hug the liners (you can grip the axis bar and wiggle it side to side), that leaves a lot more room for blade play unless the pivot is holding snug. The Compression lock however, is pinching two different points of contact. So for there to be blade play, there’d have to be substantial looseness in the pivot, or the stop pin and liners would need to be poorly fitted, which is much less likely. Ultimately if benchmade used a lock that hugged the liners tightly, it’d have a lot less room for blade play, but it’d make the bar harder to pull down, so it’s a bit of a design flaw of the axis lock as is, unfortunately.

probably explains why blades aren't centered on benchmade

I am generally nota a "Spyderco Guy" or a "Carbon Fiber Guy" either. I generally don't care for Spyderco bladeshapes with their weird thumb ramps/jimping and spydie hole. The Kapara, however I love. The thumb ramp is not too excessive and allows you to slide your finger or thumb up the blade in that dipped area for control in fine tasks or food prep. The blade near the finger choil is close to flush, allowing you to use it like a chef's knife, as opposed to a lot of Spydie blades that have a protuberance there and lack sharpening choil. The blade is really ideal for it's intended purpose, which is a lot of food prep and decent edc functionality as well. I thought I would dislike the carbon, but it looks and feels great. I was afraid it would be too slick, but that was not a problem. Overall the aesthetics of this knife have really grown on me to be one of my favorites with the red back and the funky curvature in the blade and handle, combined with the carbon. It looks a bit "odd" at first, but over time the lines and functionality of the whole package have really made me like it even more as it is a bit unique. Overall, this is one of my favorite knives now. The only thing I don't like is it is a bit larger than I am used to EDC and a bit heavier. I tend to carry smaller knives in the 3" and under 3 oz. range. However, this one is a beauty and finds my pocket often still. Usually, I keep it in my kitchen drawer next to the cutting board to play with it as often as possible for what it was designed for, but it makes it to the office with me sometimes too. Great knife.

@@ilzephyrli Thanks. I have mostly relegated the Kapara to "kitchen duty" now and just carry my Chap LW for spyderco EDC. I don't want to have to clean the Kapara all the time when I used it for food, and that is what this knife is best at. So I just tend to keep it in the kitchen drawer these days. Still a lovely, lovely knife for that!

It seems like Kapara is a knife that looks better in person, rather than on pictures or videos. I guess I will learn, If I buy it lol

For me its blade thickness where the benchmade fails.

I have the 940 and I have to say the blade design is just weird. You have a long blade with a poor design that doesn’t really allow great access to cutting as the handle gets in the way and the blade shape is almost hawksbill towards the handle and then reverse tanto at the tip. It doesn’t cut well. It’s just weird. It’s my least favorite and one of the most expensive knives I own.

Haw 940 for 6+ ares its good knife but for kitchen is shity. It's a working blade for all pourpose . It's not a kitchen knife. which is litlee annoying but can be used like a multi tool which i like .

I Hate and abhor overpriced knives,,I can afford them,,but Why??? There's nothing wrong with good old Buck 110 ,,but it's your money not mine,enjoy...
@Polyfusia

That's the same argument as "I don't understand why Ferrari's exist. A Prius will get you from point A to point B". These knives are better than a Buck 110 in every aspect. Better materials, light years better ergo's, better fit and finish, better lock, better weight and better steel. A Buck 110 is a beater outdoors knife. Something you keep in your cabin that you punish and don't care too much about. A knife like the Kapara is higher performing and also a piece of man-jewelry that you feel joy from putting it in your pocket for the day and taking out to use.

Polyfusia Well I respect your opinion, maybe I am just a simple brute but affordability and functionality are my prerequisites, since I don’t have money growing out my arse.. However, about Ferrari and Prius,, I would rather have Bentley..Right now my Hyundai is just fine and couple MoraKnives..
