One important point about video music box. YOU did not have to pay to watch the videos. You just had to watch the videos that people who had money paid to watch. It was like a jukebox. You don’t pay to listen, you pay to choose.

Kind of disappointed to hear that story about the Tim Dawg album. I thought that was a natural East Coast reaction to the popularity of West Coast rap; not an obligatory hoop to jump through devised by an A&R. At least he didn’t dismiss a record/artist just bc of cursing!

In The Shadow of Mowtown James Jamison’s son said he used to play those bass lines laying down. I know everybody says New York, but the roots of hip hop were already being seen in motor city in the 60’s and in the ring with Ali in the 70’s; also, in the clubs with Pryor.

@@Manilow-si2bv I’m sure you’re right. I mean, look how many exclamation points you have. In Detroit in 1969 a White Panther got on stage and began their pre-punk rock record live recording with the words “It’s time to kick out the jams motherfuckers!” If that ain’t the roots of hip hop, I don’t know what is. My point is you could see the birthing of what would become hip hop in all urban areas and throughout genres (which hip hop is a mashup from) in the 60’s; even though it’s not “hip hop” until the mid 70’s.

Sample time becomes irrelevant if you have your own multi track recorder. Too bad nobody ever had that shit back then. Now everybody has a computer that can multitrack.
