Head torches Compared - Petzl Nao RL, Silva Free 1200 XS, Fenix HM65R-DT.
It's dark outside & you need a new headtorch, but which one do you go for? I've tested out 3 models from 3 of the big brands, you'll see footage from each and side-by-side footage. I compare comfort, ease of use, price & the light from each model.
Hopefully after watching this, you'll have a better idea of which to go for?

Martin, one of the best side-by-side product reviews I've watched for running gear. Well done. Thanks for highlighting the beam difference between the Petzl and the Fenix. I found the center beam on the Fenix helpful on technical trails because it creates more intense shadows where I place my feet so I don't trip over roots and rocks. But I can understand your point about a more diffuse spread of light in the Petzl.

Thanks Reto, nice of you to say 😀 I've historically been a Petzl user with a bit of a dabble with BD, so it was interesting getting to use the Fenix. They seem to be more widely used than I thought, so good to hear why you like yours 👍

Same here. I guess it depends what type of light one is used to for running. The standard HM65R-T (and HM65R and HM65R SR2) have spotlight and a floodlight: if one uses them both it's possible to generate a floodier beam but runtimes will be shorter.

I've been using the Silva Trail Runner Free unit and love it, but the new Silva Free modular headlamp looks great too and will likely be my next headlamp purchase. I always run with a hat or beanie, so the Silva should be totally comfortable for me plus it seems that the overall lighting it better, more uniform (good combo of spot and flood lighting thanks to the dual LEDs), and more accurate in the Silva. Thanks for reviewing these!!!

Thanks Chad, good to hear you love your Silva, the light it gives off is really good for running, I just wish it was slightly lighter & more comfortable on my head, I'll persevere with a hat & see how it goes. Thanks for tuning in 👍

This segment of headlamps (lumens, battery and price) seems to be for Ultra running, where you are in the darkness for an entire night or even two nights. Thus, in addition to the super important criteria you already mentioned such as comfort and packability, it's also very important to consider battery life and the ability to switch batteries (and how much it costs). Same races require two headlamps with spare batteries. How much will that cost? One important contender missing in this battle is the Moonlight Bright as Day 800 or 1300. It's the headlamp used by Kilian Jornet in the last couple of years. Great video by the way 👍

Thanks Jorge, yes I've a history in ultra running, so pointed out some of the features I'd be looking for. You are right about spare batteries & price of/ease of, I'd forgotten to mention that. As for Moonlight, I've handled them before but not actually tested them, the things that jumped out to me were the fact they were pretty bulky/heavy & on the pricey side, saying that, they may perform really well, I just haven't used them. Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍

Apply some clear nail polish on the Fenix LEDs. No visible loss of brightness but makes the light more floody. One thin layer will do the trick. Plus if you're not satisfied you can always remove it with acetone in seconds.

Brilliant lights. I’m also a reactive fan and my old one is even more confusing, which is one reason I’m thinking about upgrading. The other is to get more lumens. Nice to see the light comparison. Hats off to Silva and Petzl for their light beam quality. Re battery life, does the larger Silva last longer? Another similar and simple product is the Petzl Swift RL. Only a bit less lumens at 900. Lamp and battery upfront.
@TheDeterminedRunner
@TheDeterminedRunner 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Brian, it's hard to give a direct comparison with battery life due to all of the different modes, but I wouldn't say Silva has a longer battery even though it is bigger & heavier, (as you say, nice beam quality though). The Petzl Swift is another popular choice that lots of folk go for, nice spot 👍

Petzl have just released a new swift rl with either 1200lm or 1100lm I have the older 900lm and is brilliant until you hit fog and the reactive kicks in and can't see where you are running the way around is to turn the feature off and run with a slightly dimmer light

Great comparison martin. I recently bought the Silva free 2000m great modular headtorch came with a 5 amp battery but first use it was bright so jad it on med and 3miles into a run inwas getting shocked from the cableless headband (head was tingling and a metalic taste in mouth) when i realised what was going on i took it off and stumbled and nearly collapsed. I dont wear a hat. Batt life on full is 6hrs and on med over 10. Loved the bright light though so bought the older model 1200lm and a cable from front to back and has the same beam as the silva in the video

I am thinking that SIlva headband would be great option for cold, dark winter fat tire bikers. This is the biggest gripe that bikers are having that all other headbands slip. I finally found headlamp helmet holders for cave explores and other jobs needing helmets. That said, Silva is expensive, so having separate light for bike then still needing comfortable running light is not a good option because for all the extra money, one could get extra batteries and charger and still save a $$. I am leaning towards Fenix HM65R-T version vs DT, as a person below mentioned that it has better clarity flood light. I need to be able to see sides due to frequent moose encounters that we have on our trails. Thank you for the review.
@TheDeterminedRunner
@TheDeterminedRunner 8 ай бұрын
I think you're right about the Silva headband for bikers, it shouldn't slip at all, you can get different batteries that you can swap around on the Silva unit, so that could be an option to save buying different head torches? I can't even imagine what it must be like to have frequent Moose encounters! 😱

 @TheDeterminedRunner a new HM65R-T V2 model is going to be released in 2024. It will probably have a floodier warm light but the white light is likely to be more or less as spotty as on the current HM65R-T and HM65R-DT.

im considering buying that silva free 1200. Im not a jogger. I like to go on hikes when there is no people around usually at night. Im not sure how much lumen i really want. I want decent amount of lumen and a battery big enough so that headlight lasts for atleast 2hours. Maybe 3hours. Probably 500lm is enough then Silva 1200 XS will last for a minimum of 2.5hours maybe 5h according to their webpage.

@TheDeterminedRunner 6 ай бұрын
The Silva does give off a really nice light & the battery sounds as if it'll fit your requirements. I lent it to someone a few days ago & they really liked it, the only negative they had was the silicone beading on the headband pulled at their hair & the battery was a little big for running, but as you say, you'll be hiking, so shouldn't be an issue 👍

Thx for the reply. But, common sense says i should get that silva 1200. But, if i had the funds would it be better to get silva 2000 or silva 3000? That would most likely also be overkill i guess. 500lm is probably enough for going on hikes. 3000lm though... A more serious question....is it possible to have a 20 0000mah powerbank connected to the Silva 1200 and still have the silva powered on? @@TheDeterminedRunner

@willjohnson2722
@willjohnson2722 5 ай бұрын
@@TheDeterminedRunner Coming from a Nao Plus, it's a massive long list. The switch is small, squishy, hard to find even with a thin glove on and I can't tell if I've accidentally adjusted the lamp angle when I use the switch. No clicks on the lamp angle. I could only find one usable light mode- constant medium and the quality is poor- glare. The top strap is rubbish. Taking it off was better, but then the balance didn't feel right. No grip on front light unit so it's prone to move around. Flimsy build feel. In a 1 hour run I stopped 18 times to try and find a light mode I could actually run with. Once because it wouldn't cycle between reactive and constant, so I actually had to take the battery out to reset the torch then start again. Once because I nearly fell in some holes in the road, once because I nearly fell running down rocky crags. This is on trails I run on every week and know well. Trails I have never had a problem on before. Both lowest light modes are useless, reactive medium is too dull, reactive high creates a bright spot in the middle of less bright light that was giving me a headache because I couldn't actually focus. Doesn't flood or blend properly at all. It's a nightmare and I can't believe people like it. I went out for a 3 hour run and came back after 1 hour because I could not run with the RL. My Nao Plus is completely usable, like new after 4 years of use, brilliant switch, excellent quality light, very usable light levels in low, medium and high on reactive. Clicks on the front tilt so I always know what level it's at. Very simple top strap that works perfectly.
