In episode 58, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino talk about healing the body. Brother Phap Huu is back in Plum Village, five weeks after undergoing surgery on one of his knees, ready to discuss dealing with ill health after 21 years as a practitioner of mindfulness. How can we accept what is going on in our bodies but also heal and be present?
The conversation touches upon many relevant topics, such as deep endurance of pain and suffering; being mindful of your body and coming home to it; recognizing 'the fear'; Thich Nhat Hanh’s journey of being in hospital and dealing with health issues (as recalled by his attendants); accepting the present moment; learning to be teachers; impermanence; and more.
Thank you for listening.
Enjoy!

Trusting the body and allowing ourselves to rest is so important! And I am so moved to know how Thay was so gentle and kind with his paralyzed side... and then deciding to be with the community with all his limitations... such a great embodiment of his teachings! Thank you for sharing that! ❤❤

Brother Phap Huu, your sharing of listening to and not shaming your body, beating yourself up when sick, so to speak, hits close to home. For years I''ve suffered debilitating, very painful migraines. Where others have found solutions, I'm still going at it. It even got to the point I visualized assisted suicide in Vermont. There have been times I've wondered if others were right and maybe I'm not a good person, maybe the migraine attacks are punishment. Fortunately cold weather may make me a little less susceptible, but hope I'll be able to apply this teaching and ride the storm out if it hits. Thanks again for your sharing your journeys of sickness and healing.

Good morning from Chicago. I met Brother Phap Huu this summer during the earth retreat. I met him walking the grounds of the Upper Hamlet. He was gracious and generous with his time and asked me how I was. I wanted to say all is well but after a long jet-lag my head was throbbing. So I told him. He listened and looked at me with compassion and understanding. By the 2nd day I felt better but I couldn't forget how present he was for my words. I saw him again later in the week and told him how lucky I felt that my pain was only on one side of my brain and that I was glad it wasn't both sides. We smiled and walked on. Thank you for sharing your light. Wishing you a smooth recovery.

Today I got up feeling strange sweet; hopeful that there would be a podcast episode because it felt like one was due 😊 but also remembering Br. Phap Huu's half joke about the brothers being such a competitive bunch when it came to football 😅 and the subsequent surgery prep pics 🙌 Anyway, thank you so much for this sharing. It seems the memories of when Thay was sick have ripened and you are able to share about them on a deeper level 😌🪷 As for the older talks, I've watched them and I have found them quite nourishing 😇🥰 Speaking for myself of course 😉 They come from a real place and help those of us who would like to build Sangha and find the current scale of Plum Village intimidating 🤭 Recover well, brother. Our gratitude for this episode 🙏 Lotuses for you all 🪷 🪷🪷

When phap hu mentions, a hypothetical if he came down with cancer and anouncing that would be hard... i found out that my dad has cancer the same day i heard this podcast. And it has spread so fast and hes suffering so bad. He may not have much time left. And its really exhausting trying to be there for him but also not burning myself out. But im the only one who is here for him and hes counting on me. Please pray for us 🙏 ❤️

BTW Thay lived an amazing life. While decline and death are inevitable, he seemed strong even in his 80s. There's still a video of him here on YT slowed down, but still leading the 10 Mindful Movements. Amazing man, may he Rest In Peace 🕊️
