In Healing Trauma, former gang members confront their past and create lives of possibilities and hope through Homeboy Industries. Homeboy Industries is an Los Angeles-Based organization that helps former gang members heal and transform.
Mass incarceration is a broken system the U.S. government keeps funneling taxpayers’ money into. Without sentencing justice, people - primarily poor people of color - will continue to be locked up and released in a vicious cycle that fails to address the root causes of systemic issues such as trauma, poverty, and racism.
Brave New Films’ short documentary Healing Trauma: Beyond Gangs and Prisons dives into the inner struggle of former gang members whose abusive childhoods inevitably lead to an anger that resulted in a criminal lifestyle and landed them in prison. Upon their release, these former gang members found their redemption with Homeboy Industries, Father Greg Boyle, and the many re-integrating programs offered through the Los Angeles-based organization. Healing Trauma: Beyond Gangs and Prisons follows the transformative stories of some of these former gang members as they share their childhood mental and physical abuse, growing up in the gang lifestyle, and the hope they now have through the healing power of therapy.
Sentencing justice means addressing the underlying systems that have created mass incarceration. Healing Trauma: Beyond Gangs and Prisons is the third film in Brave New Films’ Sentencing Reform series. The series features locally-led organizations that are working to end generational trauma through education, community-based services, employment and therapy. The need for sentencing justice highlights every personal story in the series; it’s a vital need so that the cycle of recidivism can finally stop.

For 13 years have been going into a men's prison to teach Nonviolent Communication by listening and learning about their lives, their experiences, their hopes and dreams. Then watching them change before our eyes as they try on some different ways of being. Dramatic Transformation is what the human being in each of us is capable of! These experiences have healed me and my previous beliefs, too. No, they are not animals, they are abused beings who can heal themselves given the opportunity!

On my own healing journey I have come to realize that what appears to be the problem is never the problem, and that all problems in our society are a manifestation of unresolved pain stemming from childhood trauma. I’m thrilled to learn that others are using this understanding it to help the world heal on an impactful scale. Amazing!! Thank you and keep it up! It is pushing me closer and closer to a change in careers because I want to be part of the solution. Also, yes... Trump definitely needs some therapy ... and a big hug.

Thanks for watching and sharing Heidi! Imagine what the world would be like if we invested in programs that heal, rather than institutions that imprison.

Hear hear! We are headed there, and you have presented the evidence by showcasing these early adopters. If such subjects interest you I encourage you to look into the work of Dr Gabor Mate, a Canadian Dr. who is helping the world rethink addiction.

❤ I think this is heartbreaking, so much cruelty directed at children from the people who are supposed to protect them. Violence begets violence. Gangs are a way of forming a more protective family in a violent world. God bless this man and his mission , bless these adults who were tortured children. I have no words, just tears

Theory of Enchantment creator Chloe Valdary recommends this program and this documentary, that you had to politicize it by making Potus45 seem uncaring after The First Step Act is disappointing.
