PC Keeps Restarting Randomly Finally Solved | Corsair CX750M Power Supply Problems. Today I will show you how to troubleshoot a PC which keeps restarting. The Power supply Unit from Corsair CX750M seems to be the culprit. 3 Videos ago I mentioned that my GP was dying as my PC kept crashing and restarting during Video Editing and some GPU benchmarks. Shortly afterwards I posted a retraction on the KZfaq community tab to say that my initial assessment was wrong, do not think my GPU is dying, and my PC will demand further testing.
You guys may know my Troubleshoot series where we look at what may prevent a PC from turning on, or if it does turn on with led lights and fan spinning but no display on the monitor, and that should be evidence that I can look at PC troubleshooting quite methodically and scientifically to eliminate causes and narrow it down to at least 1 only possible component or part.
This situation is slightly different since we do have POST, and we can use the PC for normal daily task, but as soon as I edit a normal 1080p video footage without any special effects, even during scrubbing on the timeline , my PC crashes and restarts, and it restarts during some standard benchmark of Furmark and Unigine Valley as well.
Here are my PC specs:
Case: Fractal Design R5 Black Pearl
PSU: Corsair CX750M
Mobo: Asus 970 Pro Gaming Aura
Processor: AMD FX 8350 (never overclocked, running at stock speed with Hyper 212 Cooler)
RAM: 16 GB DDR3 (2x8GB Kingston Hyper X Fury)
GPU: AMD Sapphire R9380 Nitro 4GB DDR5
Monitor: BenQ 22inch 1080p
Disk Drives:
1 Toshiba SSD 500GB
2 Toshiba HDD 7200rpm 2TB
1 Seagate HDD Baracuda Green 5400rpm 4TB
1 Western HDD Digital Blue 7200rpm 320GB
1 Standard DVD Drive
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit on SSD
Nothing is overclocked, BIOS reset to default values on everything.
Tests done:
Prime 95:
Hardware failure detected
Fatal Error: Final Result was C22CF115, expected: 9A1DC942
Illegal Sumout
Rounding was 0.4921875, expected less than 0.4
Crash and restart during Furmark and Unigene Valley (random, sometimes doesn’t crash)
New Power Supply Unit swapped with Corsair VS 550 (didn't check the overclock profile in BIOS at first)
Different known working RAM swap (tested with mem86test )
Tested with known working different Nvidia GPU GTX 970
Tests Not done (didn't need to):
Breadboarding
Voltage check of PSU with multimeter
CPU cross swap with known working CPU

My own solution took 2 years to track down!! I had no-end to this problem, (Power Surge detected due to something or other) - over the period of at least 2 years whilst using a Cooler Master case UNTIL!!! (please read this to the bottom)! I went out and paid through the nose for another power supply unit after being led to believe, - by the Asus message, and many other people suffering with the same issue; - that the the 'Power Surge' message was referring to some problem with either the power unit - The mains electricity supply - or the multi-socket surge detector plug socket?? I constantly detached graphics cards and wires and cleaned terminals as a matter of course - all without success - nothing stopped this horrendously annoying problem and after fitting the new power unit - nothing changed!! Now (a couple of hundred bucks down after buying a new power supply unit: - which I DIDN'T NEED TO PURCHASE) - and almost loosing it on many occasions due to the sheer number of times this power surge problem was occurring, - I suddenly remembered my Mother board has a start and a re-set button - perhaps I should plug the power supply direct to the Mother board - maybe it's something to do with the link between the power supply and the power button on the case (the 20 or 24 pin adapter - which is bespoke to this particular case)??? I detached the bespoke 20 or 24 Pin Power adaptor Cable from the power supply unit and mother board and plugged the power supply unit chord directly into the mother board - (BY DOING THIS I WAS LEAVING MYSELF WITH THE PROBLEM OF NOT HAVING A WORKING 'POWER' BUTTON ON THE COOLER MASTER CASE)! For the last year I have simply used the Mother board power button (with a long non-conductive stick) - through the grill of the case as a long-term 12 month test; - guess what, - not a single power down due to power surges!! The problem for me must have been the 20 or 24 Pin Adapter cable and power button on the Cooler Master case? Hope this is useful to some of the thousands of people out there with the same issue?

This just happened to me. PC would restart after launching a game. I did my own research and thought it was a power supply issue. I replaced it and my PC now works. After days of trying to figure out the problem and finally solving it, I now got this video on my page and it even used the same CX750M power supply I had. Great video, I had a similar problem but it would power off and restart randomly even just idle maybe once every hour , my trouble shooting came down to dust build up inside the PSU, I cleaned the whole system with compressed air, a brush to dislodge it too, it was fairly clean but the problem was just the same, after much fustration trying to work out which component was failing I got a can of Electrical contact spray cleaner and litterally sprayed the entire system including inside the PSU so the whole system was dripping wet but super clean, its safe its non conductive, so after a few hours when it was all evaporated it worked! and has not restared ever since. I'm guessing some dust can become conductive in large amounts and that was shorting somthing.

It would be very interesting to put an oscilloscope on each of the power supply outputs in turn to see whether there was a spike or voltage drop-out the moment it crashed, or whether the output had excess ripple or noise. Does it always crash after about the same length of time, or is it completely random? But in practical terms, your best bet is probably just to swap out all the electrolytics. It would then be very instructive to test them all with one of those bare board ESR testers you can get ridiculously cheaply from Far Eastern sellers.
@HealMyTech1
@HealMyTech1 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip thanks for inputting. The crash is random. If you missed the other tests I did since this video was published, DC voltage on 24 PIN, 8 PIN CPU, and 12 PIN GPU plugs all yield relevant 3.3v, 5V, and 12V within acceptable margins. Fuses tested okay, all caps look okay physically, no signs of anything burnt, at least to my limited assessment. Even what you mentioned as test is beyond my ability at the moment. So I guess you sort of volunteered to do the test for us, and I will be casually producing that tutorial video, cool...I'll be in touch...!

thank you for this video, I found it 1.5 years after it was posted and also after I spent weeks trying to figure out my problem. Sadly, I already figured it out and THEN I found your video lol. anyway, here is how it happened for me: I have an intel i3-8100, RX 5700, H310m-PRO VD, 16 GB ram at 2666 Mhz, and a cooler master elite 600w when I play games for more than an hour my PC freezes with very loud buzzing in the speakers, I have to restart from the case button. I thought it was a motherboard issue, I tried upgrading the motherboard bios, but something interrupted it and it failed mid-way, so the whole system stopped working. I sent the motherboard to a computers expert who replaced the bios and got it working again, and I also got an SSD just in case. Installed a new windows on the SSD (to make sure it isn't a windows issue) and copied my online games there, etc. I ran memtest86 and there were no errors on the memory (they are brand new sticks). After playing games for a while it happened again, this time I thought it was an overheating issue, so I just removed the side panel from the case to give it more air. It kept me going for a longer time but eventually it happened again. I was so mad I am in an air conditioned room so I can't see why it would even overheat. I bought a big CPU cooler that kept my CPU under 55 degrees and was confident that the problem is fixed.... but BOOM, again, freeze and loud buzzing and I had to hard restart. so I decided to test everything thoroughly. I installed MSI afterburner and used its OSD function to monitor everything. I played games and noticed that the PC froze when the CPU reached 52 degrees and GPU reached 80 degrees. I installed Heaven benchmark and set everything on ultra, PC froze at CPU 40+ degrees and GPU 80 Degrees. I set the GPU fans to maximum to see if it will crash when the GPU slowly reached 80 degrees, and also so it would draw more power from the PSU. I ran the benchmark, this time the freeze happened at GPU temp of 67 degrees and CPU temp of 39 degrees !!! now I was sure it wasn't a component issue and it was definitely the PSU. and now that I found your video, I am 100% certain it is a PSU problem. there are hundreds of people having this issue on the internet and none of them knows the fix, I hope my story helps any of you who is still searching, try running tests yourself to be certain. and good luck out there gamers.

Although the Valley benchmark runs flawlessly if I try and plat Doom Eternal or Resident Evil 2 (The game it occurred most often, on hardcore with NO AUTOSAVE!!) I'm currently looking for solutions and the PSU seems the most likely cause. Unfortunately I do not have a spare to test it. If the PSU is at fault / fans not kicking in would you expect the PSU to get hot? I put my hand on it after it restarted and it didn't feel hot to touch.

So far THIS IS an amazing video, never knew that a power supply COULD cause an issue!!! The problem I am having is, on a Windows 10 machine, with a Gigabyte/ Intel Core i5 motherboard CPU combo, and at around one and a half to two hours, my computer WILL randomly shut down, then reboot automatically without any input or reason for doing so!! The odd thing is, my power supply is literally brand new out of the box, BUT it is a lower quality 400 watt, power supply! The basic function of this PC was built to act as a Windows ONLY media server, using the Windows File Sharing Feature, to serve files across my network! Like your set up, I am running an SSD as my main OS drive, and 4 other drives (all of them SATA) for file storage!! SO this computer is basically "set up" to just sit at idle most of the time!! I KNOW I should upgrade the 8 gigs of RAM to at least 16 gigs, as one hard drive IS a 6 terabyte drive and two others are 3TB drives (the other drives two are 500gb). BUT I was hoping to get some use out of this until I can afford more RAM!! BUT like I say, every hour and a half to two hours, the computer randomly shuts down and reboots!! SO I might have to swap the power supply out!!! Thank you for the video just the same though!! Great work my friend!!!

Initial stage: PC used to restart randomly while I was playing The Witcher 3 Later stage: PC used to turn off and won't start for a while, PSU became like some kind of a battery where it needs some initial charge to turn on. Now if I unplug the system for a few hours, it will take around 15-18 hours to turn on. Now: PC does not turn on. Luckily I got a warranty on both Mobo and PSU, so I have given the Mobo for warranty, awaiting their reply. Edit: Excellent KZfaq channel!

I have a Seasonic Snowsilent 1050W powering a 5820k and 2080TI along with various mechanical/SS drives, D5 pump, and numerous fans. I have been racking my brain for the past year now trying to figure out whats going and at first I thought it was an improperly seated plug, but they started happening again and all the plugs are fully seated. We get random outages in our area with some pretty bad surges (one this past labor day took out the garage door opener). Like you, I can use the PC for web browsing and light duty stuff without issue. Once the PC is under load, restarts will happen at random and the events are more guaranteed to happen with overclocked CPU and/or GPU. I've logged voltages before and never noticed any weird fluctuations... Maybe I was looking at the wrong voltages. Edit: Yes, the PC is plugged into a surge suppressor.

If you’re seeing this in 2021, REPLACE THE POWER CABLE with the one that comes with the power supply. I was just using the same old power cable from the old supply not thinking there was a difference. I was searching everywhere for what the issue could be. I was packing it up to return the power supply. And noticed the power cable that came with power supply was a lot thicker than my old one. The new power cable could be a thicker gauge wire to accommodate the current flow the new power supply needs. USE the power cable that comes with the power supply. Hope this helps.
