It’s irritating when you see United Healthcare is going to post record profits this quarter since people aren’t going to checkups due to Covid. Shouldn’t we see a refund in our premiums?

We need Medicare-For-All/A single payer healthcare system here in the United States, especially during this time with the Coronavirus pandemic! What is more "Pro-Life" than ensuring that every person in America has guaranteed affordable healthcare regardless of their job or social status? Also, if we all had access to basic healthcare, we would all have the "freedom" to live long lives and rarely have to worry about medical bankruptcies. Sure, taxes will go up, but the overall cost will go down so much that everyone will be paying less and saving thousands of dollars every year. Furthermore, if some of us need additional healthcare than Medicare, then we have the "choice" to get additional insurance, but for others Medicare would be more than enough. Finally, if every other developed country (Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand) can implement this system and save money, then why can't the United States do the same and help "Make America Great Again" for everybody at least on the issue of healthcare? Oh, and if American citizens die from lacking access to affordable health insurance because the Republicans believe that the government shouldn't provide it then we are failing our country's promise of defending "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" for its citizens as well as "promoting the general welfare" of all the people.

I'm so lucky that I actually like my current job that provides excellent health coverage for me and my family!

Another option that some may want to consider looking into are companies like Christian Healthcare Ministries or Medishare. The premiums are low and go directly toward members medical bills, not bloated salaries. CHM takes care of all medical events over $500 at 100% (no deductible). I know so many people (especially small business owners) who have had it for years and love it.

I have guaranteed lifetime employer paid healthcare in retirement with minimum 10 years of employment with them - major golden handcuffs. This is a huge benefit.

Man i also live in CA. I am 53 yo and i just quit my job on May 2021 because i hated it. The only reason i stayed there because of the health insurance but i am so done with job. My health insurance with HealNet now is $515 a month with 70% Silver Coverage. It sucks but i need to be safe than sorry. This country's health insurance is rediculous, the worst ive seen because of the cost. I agree with you 100%, it is worth it even it is costly because i am free what i want to do. Single mom here 1099 make 32k b4 taxes and government kick me out of Tenncare cuz I “make too much to qualify.” Got few insurance quotes for me & my then 3 yrs old son it’s all btw $850-1100 per month. We have been out in the cold for 3 years without any coverage. Being on “your own” only work if you are single and have decent $$$ in saving and side hustle.

This is great information! I follow your videos quite closely and I wondered how you can retire and still take care of health costs. Also mentioning about the Cobra insurance was good too as I was wondering about how that worked. Excellent video once again.

When I was an independent contractor, I was shelling out $1800/month for health insurance for a family of four. Let that sink in. $1800-a-month! Fortunately, the contract paid well so it was worth it. And, yes, there are cheaper options via Bronze or Silver plans but, for our family needs, a Gold plan made more sense. As BTB mentioned, California has subsidies if you are in a lower income bracket and we also have Medi-Cal (aka Medicaid or free government insurance) for those in the lowest income brackets.

Have you ever considered doing a breakeven cost analysis comparing the cost (risk) of an out-of-pocket catastrophic event versus the annual health insurance premium including the deductible for that event? I've often wondered what the itemized cost for a corrective procedure or treatment would be out-of-pocket versus the cost of carrying an annual health insurance premium. I realize that not carrying health insurance is kinda like rolling the dice but the insurance is getting so expensive that it may be approaching a break-even point in just paying out-of-pocket in the event of a catastrophic health care event.

Don’t spend your HSA on healthcare. Pay out of pocket so you preserve your tax exempt money

This is the best advise for self employed entrepeneurs. I am not cover for dental, heart attacks surgeries, Self employed we are screwed

The cheapest insurance for my wife and I is $700/mo, and that’s with a $11k/yr deductible. Even if you just visit the doctor a couple times a year for minor stuff, that’s a few thousand more out of pocket. We could move to Thailand and live off that amount and also get better medical care. It really is some crazy system we have here. A friend of mine says it’s not health insurance, it’s wealth insurance, which is basically how I think of it now. It’s the insurance cost you have to pay to live in the US similar to how you can get kidnapping insurance or something.

Good video, health insurance is always a big deal, especially for people with 3-4 family members. I got the best plan (100% coverage, include eyes, dental ) for free, 20K saving each year, keeping my job is worth it for me at least.

I use Sidecar health for $1300 every 3 months for a family. It’s not considered health insurance, but it’s a great option for people who usually only go to the doctor for check ups and want some protection for any emergencies.

You can join the reserves in the military too. You get super cheap Tricare Health Insurance and you only drill once a month for two or three days at a job. It's an ultra part-time job, and you even get paid for it AND a pension.

I live in Chiang Mai. Thai Health Insurance for a foreigner like myself(55 to 60) is about $2000 per year(no monthly premiums allowed). Yes you pay it all at once,. “The Grass is not always greener on the other side”.

do you think US will fix its health insurance cost problem or should I move back to taiwan? I was born in taiwan and came to US when I was 2, so I can have dual US-Taiwan citizenship. I would like to be self-employed. I read that in order to be taiwan citizen, you also have to be able to speak/write chinese, so it will take some investment in time for me to learn to write chinese.

That's ridiculous to pay per month for a healthy young person. Time to move to Kuala Lumpur where you can pay $500 per year, not month for private health insurance.

Shop and switch for plans every year it’s like going back and forth from Comcast and att except u go from like United health to Aetna, gotta keep going back and forth every year or your plan cost will get higher every year and you won’t get the best deals

A while back, I got the best plan in my state and they paid none of my medical expenses. Now my state has only one plan and no doctor in my area will take it. If it weren’t for the ACA I wouldn’t be able to get health insurance because I had a rare (but resolved!) complication of an appendectomy. Even though I was healthy I was deemed “uninsurable” just prior to the implementation of the ACA. So while I am glad we have some aspects of the ACA, currently in my state it’s not so great. Certainly our healthcare system needs to change!

Very nice. I am thankful that I have insurance through employer, and continue that even though I'm medically retired. The healthcare game is expensive. Health insurance is only about half of what the expense is. People going to doctors, then seeking second opinion, then seeking a specialist, then specialist prescribes treatment/medicines. Pharmacy Benefits managers get a cut, and hospitals get a cut, and other people. You probably don't want to go seek healthcare over in Hong Kong.

I'm kinda lucky I guess,maybe, perhaps. I retired a 5 months ago after 33 years and was able to continue getting health insurance with my employer for just under 4300.00 a year and have a 4800.00 deductible though preventable care is free as long as it stays within the guidelines. I still have about 3 more years till I can get medicare. I have diabetes so it would cost a lot more to go out into the market place. Over all I consider myself lucky to have worked at a great employer. I hear people say this all the time that the people they worked with where great it was their boss that weren't. LOL for me I had some of the greatest boss over the years and with most of them we are still friends and keep in contact and that goes from lower management on up.

Great information on Insurance. I live in Thailand but am a resident of Florida. Even though Healthcare is super cheap in Thailand I still get ACA health insurance just in case I need to go back to the USA and in case ACA goes away some day. I am hoping I am grandfathered in if it eliminated. Florida is definitely cheaper than CA for ACA health insurance. I like ACA bt the runaway costs need to be addressed. I personally don't believe killing ACA and starting over is the safest option. But in this video you state great reasons NOT to work for the man but in a newer video you say you are leaving retirement because you are not producing enough and are depressed? I don't get it? Which is it freedom or slavery?

In California low income households can apply for medi-cal. People who qualify usually get it for free.

I’m not thinking of quitting my job yet, but my employer pays all of my medical plan premiums. It’s an HDHP PPO with $2.8k deductible and $4k oop max.

Obamacare is really expensive a 63 year old relative of mine lost their job and after decades of high stress/long hours really did not want to find another job. This relative had over a million dollars saved so you would think early retirement would be no problem right? They would have had to pay $ 1,800 a month which was too much even for them and they had to seriously consider going without insurance, getting the most stripped down version of Obamacare or only withrdrawing 40K a year from their savings/getting a subsidy. 40k a year would have been a hardship they had been making 100 to 150k at their job. I understand having to pay my own insurance but when costs are this unreasonable it puts fire out of reach for all but the wealthiest. You were very lucky to only be paying $300 to $700 a month.

If we had Medicare for all the benefits would far out weigh any negative. People would be free to move from one job to the next with out any insurance considerations. People who want to quit their job to start a business could do so with out the burden of how they are going to find and pay for insurance. That would create a job when the person left to be filled and they might get to a point were they hirer someone, another job created or more. Smaller businesses would be more competitive with larger businesses that can afford to pay for better benefits, allowing them to grow quicker with less risk. Businesses hate devoting anytime to anything that takes time and resources away from making profit. This is a huge weight on Businesses that should not be there but have to be in order to compete for the best work force. Also if businesses did not have to pay for all or part of health insurance that would not be a consideration when they hirer anyone who may be ill or have a spouse who is ill or just older for men or a woman in her child bearing years so on and so on anything that affects the premium is a reason not to hirer someone.. Also heath insurance companies do not add one thing to healthcare other than make billions from pushing paper. Cut out the middle man so the government would negotiate all cost directly with providers. Why do we pay insurance companies and then they have the say to deny coverage, which is a huge conflict of interest. I feel there should be incentives for doctors to keep you healthy and incentives for people to stay healthy combined this would change healthcare in our country for the better for everyone and save money in the long run. If you want private healthcare or an add on to the Medicare benefits, fine you pay for it just like now with Medicare.

It only makes sense to live in California if you need to for a high paying job. Maybe, some people justify it as a lifestyle choice and don’t mind the high taxes and regulations. For a guy like you that earns money online, you should look at moving abroad to save on taxes and cost of living.

Healthcare is literally the only reason why i have stayed at such a crappy job for 7 years. My coverage for my wife and I per month is $168. After 7 years of this i am ready to quick but unfortunately cant because her works coverage is$400+ per month. Not to be exaggerative but I feel trapped and honestly feel like being dead would be easier.

But this premium triples if you have family with kids. It like you are penalized to have kids without a job in this country.

You may want to put your house on the market the day after Biden wins if you will be pushed over the $400K income level? Or if you are eventually planning on moving do it now! Wife refuses to sell our home or move out of CA. :) Do you have a HK ID? You can hide money under your Chinese name in China... I know a person that has his US name and a HK ID with a different Chinese name. He buys real estate in China and has accounts in China and the US has no connection to his Chinese name. I think he tells the IRS he gives money to his "cousin" in China. :)
