Healthcare and Humanity: One Rural Family Doctor’s Simple, Hopeful Prescription. Working at the interface of birth, life, and death in a broken and traumatized US Healthcare system; this descriptive talk seeks to illuminate and integrate the essence of the healer’s art through the concept of sonder and several touching stories reclaiming humanity in medicine. Zach grew up in Edgar, a rural town in central Wisconsin. He currently practices rural full-scope family medicine in Wild Rose and is an executive physician leader in his healthcare organization. Zach is a firm believer that physicians hold an obligation not only to their patients, but to their community; and that self-knowledge is a keystone for discovering compassion and awareness. Dr. Baeseman, as a fellow family physician, your talk really hit home for me. How you emphasized 'sonder' - understanding each person's unique and intricate life - in our work is so essential. By connecting your personal experiences, like your mom's heart attack, to the challenges we face in treating our patients, really stood out to me. You've pointed out some big problems in our healthcare system, but your message gives me hope in the strength of care that is truly centered around each patient's needs and stories and is what keeps many in the healthcare field doing what they do. Your commitment to treating every patient as a complex individual, not just another number, is not only inspiring but also a reminder of why we chose family medicine as a specialty.
