A recent study had a lot of negative things to say about diet sodas, but how seriously should we take that study? Observational research can be powerful and useful, but it can also lead to shaky outcomes. So, what does this study tell us about some of the limitations in how research is done?

And i dont doubt someone could be addicted to soda to the point where they drive to the store to buy it. But seriously i used to drink a can or two of coke a day now i havent drunk soda in months. Also stay away from caffeinated soda like coca cola. Also if you cant control yourself to the point where you impulsively buy soda thats a real issue you cant just ignore

1. As I tell my students: correlation doesn’t mean causation, but it doesn’t rule out causation, either. Correlation shows that there is some sort of relation but doesn’t indicate direction. 2. There is a publication bias in professional journals. Studies showing a significant outcome are more likely to be published than those with no significant outcome.

I don't think it's reasonable to assume their regulations are based in factual evidence rather than their funding influences, so if they were scientifically literate, it may not make a difference as their motivations may not be the health or safety of citizens. It may be more reasonable to remove the ability of politicians to regulate that which is studied and understood by scientists. Those who already have the knowledge and the right motivations should be the ones making the decisions, rather than educating those whose motivations lie elsewhere.

Just as a side note, it doesn't help when artificial sweetners DO give people migraines and make them feel sick (I'm one of those people) and when MSG does cause horrible abdominal pains that can last for days (I'm one of those people, too). That said, not all artificial things are bad, but something that repeatedly affects your own health in a negative way IS. Just as gluten (which isn't an artifical chemical, but large amounts of people who have no wheat allergy still hate it for some strange reason...) is the easiest meat substitute for my body to digest (and real meat, again, causes nasty intestinal problems for me), perhaps MSG and artificial sweetners work fine for other people. It seems to me that it's so very hard to predict how one person's body will react to something that, perhaps, we simply need better availability of "special needs" options, rather than to try to make sweeping generalizations. Nevertheless, the soda wars shall likely continue.

I don’t believe diet soda is all that bad for you. Most people’s main problem is way too many carbs, way too much snacking throughout the day. Every time you put food in your mouth, your insulin spikes. Every time you eat excessive carbs, your insulin spikes. Intermittent fasting, eating twice a day perhaps on a 16/8 ratio, with no snacking in between will cut your insulin spikes to twice a day. Next, you’ve got to cut carbs to control hunger. You will be amazed how you aren’t hungry when you limit carbs. I don’t like Keto, I think it is too restrictive, but I do like limiting carbs and only getting them from fruits and vegetables.

I’m trying to get a better grasp on the concept of absolute risk vs relative risk with respect to a study’s ‘baseline risk’...I would think that a risk increase of 10% is ‘bad’ regardless of baseline - isn’t understanding a number’s relative impact the whole point of using percentages in the first place? I’m sure I am just lacking some knowledge/understanding on this - does anyone know if Aaron has any videos on this subject, or links to other videos that might explain the concept? Thanks for any help!

An excellent question! We have not done a video on this topic, but I think this one from The Body of Evidence gives a good visualization of the concept: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m92PaMiFyNObkp8.html I hope this helps! -Tiffany

This is something commonly exploited in the medical field as relative risk adjustments often sound more impressive. Illustrative examples may be helpful. If I offered to sell you a device that halved your chance of dying from a meteor strike, you'd likely decline even if you believed the claim. The baseline risk is so low, the cost is likely not worth it. Reducing your risk from 1 in a million to 1 in 2 million is simple not a good use of resources. But if I had a device that reduced your risk of heart disease by 50%, that should be more strongly considered. In the pharmaceutical industry they will use relative risk reductions because they sound more impressive... to help justify their costs.

How long did it take you to "realize" you didn't like something that your body gives your "brain" instant feedback to your consumption? If you don't like something, don't consume it. If you like something and enjoy its effects, consume it. I don't really like pork and don't consume it but don't go around trying to virtue signal my personal choice.

The thing about bones and soda is that they took a thing that happens and blew it out of the water, what I mean is that yes, it's true that you urinate more calcium when you drink soda, but the amount is insignificant if you have a healthy diet(and one theory in why this happens is that the caffeine makes you lose calcium, so coffee is as much a villain in this as soda is).

I feel like I was fed with a bunch of numbers and statistics but no clear conclusion (except for the 2 seconds in which he mentioned he used to argue artificial sweeteners were better than refined sugar but latest studies proved otherwise). Artificial sweeteners don't have calories but sweeteners to trigger the same hormonal responses as sugar which switches on insulin and cortisol levels up which in turn make fat burning more difficult for the body. An indirect way to determine insulin levels are up to measure ketone levels. When ketone levels are low insulin levels are high and when ketone levels are high then insulin levels in the blood should be low. Ketone blood level meters are slightly more expensive than glucose blood meters but are easily accessible. It is more problematic to get the metabolism to burn triglycerides /body fats/lipids/ketones than simple sugars/glucose for those looking to burn fat. *summary* Diet soda does not contribute to body fats, but they make it harder for the body to burn existing body fats.. *warning* An extended water fast with electrolytes is the safest and quickest way to burn body fats - without proper electrolytes during an extended water fast that last longer than 3 days, the end of the water fasting period can trigger death by stroke and cardiac arrest in what is called the refeeding syndrome. I appreciate you open conclusions of reality. On Jan 1, 1972, I was allowed to stay up late (High school) to see the top 10 carcinogens list. When water was ranked #1, I figured that a life of living by statistics was not for me. When I started probing deep into some outrageous research findings and found that a 50.1% finding on a new study was billed as 'new findings show proof', I was exasperated. When I was 32, I began working in a city whose water was so disgusting I had constant diarrhea, I began buying Diet Coke out of the vending machines and stopped drinking water altogether. 37 years later, of Diet Coke only, I am old, cancer free and lucid, without Alzheimer's. Maybe if I die someday, they can do an autopsy and do a college paper on me. 🤐

I believe 100% that we do not have enough information on these products and I agree that most likely these researchers are doing simply like what you stated but the same time United States has a huge obese problem and along with the fast food with all you can drink soda in any restaurant your body cannot tell the difference between artificial sweeteners and sugar ,it still kicks up your insulin which can explain the increase in diabetes . I think it's safe to say get the diet soda and sodas out of your diet drink water and eat healthy.

I have never had a weight problem, but I drank Diet Dr Pepper because I loved the taste. At one time I drank 3 bottles a day and cut it down to 2 cans a day. I developed a gut while drinking it. I stopped drinking the soda about a month ago, and my gut has already shrunk. I also developed a couple of tooth cavities which I'm sure came from the acid in the soda. I also had constant cravings when I drank the soda, and those cravings have now disappeared. I also feel much better since I stopped drinking soda. No more headaches. No one needs to drink diet soda, or any soda, and as far as I'm concerned, no one should.

Ok so I wanted to try this so I fasted for 24 hours and tested my blood glucose. It was 203. Yup high I know. Then I drank 10oz of diet coke caffeine free nothing else. Again 20 minutes later I tested my blood glucose and it was at 283, much higher jist 20 minutes ago. I'm guessing it depends on each person but I don't see why it would but be carefully. After 6 months of fasting at different lengths such as 24 hours to as long as 20 days I was down to my correct weight and my blood glucose at a fasted state was 80 and after a normal meal stained stable at 110. Diabetes reversed thanks to Dr. Jason Fung.

I disagree with the idea that no one needs diet soda.I know someone who has digestive issues. The only thing that works for them (they've tried tons of meds) is to drink large amounts of artificial sweeteners. Their gastro knows about it and approves. I myself drink diet soda because it has caffeine and is acidic, both of which treat some of my medical issues.
