I am an oil painter and use Sennelier "green for oil" medium gel or just flax oil. No need to use anything toxic like solvent,just be carefull with cadmium colors. Even the paint directly from the tube works perfectly fine if you like brush strokes 😊 And a good soap for cleaning is more than enough 🙃 I paint surrounded by my kids so I had to find a way to make it works 😄🎨

I love watching your experimental videos! Loved this one. I started with oils but fell in love with gouache & Flashe paint (I love me a good tactile painting). I have to tell you, one thing I love about your videos is hearing your thoughts through the process as you decide what to do next, what's not working, what is working ... Graham is on the list in watercolors and maybe oils too. Right now, I do more wc than oils, and I've got plenty right now. I did order a tube of the M. Graham Quinacridone Gold in oil sometime back. Hi Sandi, good to hear that alternatives exist out there 😊. Although, I have come to the conclusion, after years of painting in different mediums, that the quality of acrylics nowadays, makes them them, for me, the better option. Safflower oil has helped some people. I wanted to ask you why not try the water soluble oil paint? They have in the Cobra brand their own safflower oil for thinning and glazing but the oil paints are engineered to clean up in water and soap no turps, no Gamsol. There also is a fast drying liquid but the products oils don’t intermix with regular oils.

Yay, oil painting video!! Your channel is actually what brought soft body acrylics to my attention (and they’re the only acrylics I’ve ever really liked) but I still just LOVE oil paints. I have never tried the M.Graham oils, though I have their gouache and their walnut oil. Gamblin oil paints also have that soft smooth consistency and they have a number of safflower oil-based solvent-free medium options. I was going to say that many of their paint colors are safflower-oil based, too, but I was on their website clicking around on colors and every one I selected was made with refined linseed oil. I’ll have to go check my tubes. Either I’m wrong, or they changed formulas, or I just clicked on the wrong colors. So perhaps their paints are not an option for you. Random question - when you say “turps,” do you just use that as a general term and actually use odorless mineral spirits, or do you actually use turpentine?

This was really helpful. I used to do oils but moved to acrylics for a number of reasons. Toxicity and fumes being a big factor. I had to laugh when I found out that these have walnut oil because I'm allergic to walnuts. What I really got out of it is an appreciation for the acrylics. I love the layering ability. I miss the naturalness of oil. To compensate for that with acrylics, I use Dorland's wax to finish. I use that to finish gouache as well. You talked me out of going back to oils.

First off you look fabulous in orange and that grey headband. So cute! Orange isn't a color I can pull of people will ask me if I'm ill 😂 but it's such a beautiful color. I really appreciate you sharing these paints and that you still had a bit of the "ehhehhe" throat clearing. I used to love oil painting, I worked in a huge ventilated space with air filters and still had issues. Never quite figured out what it was that caused the issue. I can eat flax with no issue... which is what linseed oil is made from. It makes me wonder if they add a filler or preservatives that aren't listed? I don't know if this idea will appeal to you or not. I know a lot of other artists that paint base layers in acrylic and then add luxurious oil details in their top layer. I've toyed with the idea of trying Holbein's water mixable oil paints but I haven't tried them yet. M graham makes amazing paint. I have their gouache and I love it!

My teacher uses a short jar (like marshmallow cream). It is tapered, so it is wider at the base than the mouth. We put a plastic dish scrubby in the bottom and pour about 1" of Gamsol in it. I've been using the same for ages. I told her I should change it, and she said it wasn't necessary. The weird thing is that the Gamsol evaporates in the plastic bottle, but not in my jar. So, if you have it in an open container or one that does not seal well, it may evaporate. I did notice that my plastic lid on my jar is buckled inward. I don't remember it being like this before, but I could be wrong. I thought it might be due to the type of chemical or a reaction and being sealed up for so long. We don't use oil since good paint normally has plenty of oil in it already. However, I do have some raw linseed and turpentine from the hardward store. Then again, the turp has mostly evaporated. I love the smell of linseed. :-)
@sandihester
@sandihester 2 жыл бұрын
Good info!
@katpaints
@katpaints 2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming that the Gamisol and the plastic is not a good combination. I was told to never use plastic with any type of solvent and to never leave any kind of rag you've used in a solvent in the open. When I was a kid, one of my neighbor's had a big fire in their garage because paint/turp rags were stuffed in a can and spontaneous combustion took over. A metal can sealed with a lid for things like that would have contained it.
@bunnyrose9525
@bunnyrose9525 2 жыл бұрын
@@katpaints The Gamsol came in a plastic bottle, but my marshmallow jar is glass. It’s also in a temperature controlled room (that’s about the only thing that’s controlled in there😂). The scrubby has been in the jar with Gamsol for 15 years and appears to be completely intact. BTW, my teacher has a break-your-fingers rule if you leave your paintbrush standing in bottle or jar (such as a water container). I have a million bent brushes so I try to be better about it. She’s all about tough love. 😁
@katpaints
@katpaints 2 жыл бұрын
@@bunnyrose9525 Yes. I understand. I've found that even though things come in plastic that they aren't always vapor/evaporation proof. I'm assuming they are hoping to prevent breakage. I know that back in the 70's and 80's when I was using oils, it was all in metal and I poured some into glass containers to use. I bought a Silacoil jar all those years ago which does the same thing. I know that I eventually cleaned it out. I wonder just where it is now! The metal coil on the bottom lets you scrub the brush a bit. I like the idea of using one of those plastic dish washing things - Scotch Brite? Interesting that it didn't dissolve, isn't it. It all depends on what things are made from. I have been very good about not leaving brushes in liquids - unless I'm trying to work dried paint out of them. When painting rooms, things dry out much more often than when painting um, pictures! LOL! I say good for your teacher! LOL! Her reaction is definitely memorable!
@bunnyrose9525
@bunnyrose9525 2 жыл бұрын
@@katpaints I looked up the Scotch Brite, and I think that's it! Or something like it. It's kind of rolled plastic mesh stuff, but, yes, I imagine it would work the same as the metal coils, so that could have been her inspiration (or whoever came up with that)! :)

hi I think that I accidentally deleted my comment. So here it goes again. M Graham paints are great, as well as their customer service and technical advice. As a way to avoid anything you may be sensitive to consider wearing Nitrile gloves and/or a barrier cream so as invisible glove. It’s not too expensive and doesn’t feel weird on your hands, Sorry for the repeat comment. I’m not sure what happened. I hope that you give oils a bit of time to get your “legs” back. They are worth it. Either way whatever best works for you and what you want to say with your work. Just give them a chance again :).
