Clinton Adams has never fully escaped the horror he says he witnessed 71 years ago near a remote, wooden bridge that crossed the Apalachee River in rural Walton County.
A sudden burst of violence that he and a childhood friend secretly watched. It was late afternoon of July 25, 1946, when a white mob fatally shot two black couples near the Moore’s Ford bridge.

My grandparents used to tell us the story of their trip from the homestead in South Carolina back to their home in Hannibal Square Winter Park. There were roads blacks traveled especially at night but they couldn't take that road because they were flooded out. My grandfather had to get back for work the next day. The cops were just waiting for blacks that night he said. My grandmother said it was the most scared she had ever been because my mom and two aunts were kids in the back seat. The cop pulls my grandfather over and made him get out of the car. Called him a boy and spat on him and made him humble himself in front of my grandmother and his kids. He told that story with watery eyes. The story came up because for 40 years he and my grandmother never left South Carolina in the afternoon. He always left early in the morning. That happened in 1955 and it still haunts him today. He said they could have killed them and done whatever they wanted to my grandmother and no one would ever know. I am grateful he did not let pride overrule common sense because I would not be here today.

Two little white boys, just happened upon it. Scared out of their minds by the horror of it all. Kids were not supposed to know about lynchings. So he kept it a secret what they had witnessed. I totally believe it could be the truth. He knows he does not have too many years left. I also believe that a policeman could have been involved. Northerners wanted to punish white southerners. Then white southerners took out their rage on helpless blacks. 😢

Back in 2007 I took a job down in Georgia. Part of that job was to do home inspections. So obviously I was always talking to the home owners. One home owner’s was a older white man and he started telling me how white people used to treat black people. Of course he said that it was very bad, but at the end of the conversation he said, “white people haven’t changed. They are still the exact same people that they were in the old days.” Truthfully, he didn’t tell me anything that I didn’t already know, it was just very interesting hearing this from an old white man who has lived a long time and has seen a lot.

This is a sick part of our history, and is hard to talk about but it needs to be because we still have much to make up for in race relations. In Mississippi, the number of black lynching victims was 462 from 1882-1930, 285 from 1900-1931, (3 in 1931) and 539 from 1882-1968. In Georgia, the number of black lynching victims was 423 from 1882-1930, 302 from 1900-1931, (0 in 1931) and 493 from 1882-1968. Based on figures from those three periods and that one year, in Georgia, there were 371 black lynching victims from 1900-1968, while Mississippi had 359 black lynching victims from 1900-1968. Meanwhile, there's absolutely nothing on the AJC's archives indicating that white mobs lynched more black people in Georgia during the 20th century than white mobs in any other state.

When I was in university, I was required to take two world history courses, and all I can say is that those classes were both fascinating and depressing!! The history of the world is a history of blood shed, lust for power and wealth. If I were not a believer in the absolute sovereignty of God, I don’t know how I could have any peace in my heart. But I do believe that God is ruling over all things- even the horrific things. My peace is in Jesus alone.

There were, from 1900-1931, 302 lynchings in Georgia and 285 lynchings in Mississippi, but the numbers in the year of 1931 were 0 in Georgia and 3 in Mississippi. If the numbers from 1882-1930 were 462 in Mississippi, and 423 in Georgia, the numbers from 1882-1899 were 180 in Mississippi, and 121 in Georgia. When 1882-1899 numbers are subtracted from 1882-1968 numbers of 539 in Mississippi, and 493 in Georgia, you get 1900-1968 numbers of 372 in Georgia and 359 in Mississippi. Even though Mississippi's reputation as the most racist state of all may be warranted, it can be chalked up to that hardly anyone is aware of the fact that Georgia was tops among all states in 20th century black lynching victims.

I turned in a great uncle for THE FAMILY FUN FILLED STORIES HE TOLD as if they were HAPPY TIMES! and I've heard the stories before, but once I reached the age of FUCK YOU! I SHALL NOT BE BRAINWASHED WITH RACISM & HATE! I distanced myself from certain family members (racist!) And at the age of 72! my uncle had to pay for a crime he committed 50 years before (this was 10 years ago) that uncle is still alive @ 82 and YES! he's in prison! He's one of the top 5 oldest people in that particular prison! and NO I DON'T FEEL BAD (regardless of what family members are mad at me!) The Bottom Line is my racist uncle took part in killing a black man back in the 1960's and HE LAUGHED ABOUT IT! and was telling us kids about it as if we were suppose to be impressed or proud or smile and laugh, we were mortified and in shock! we were also CHILDREN! (I was 9 when I first heard about it, then I heard about it again when I was 12 and the older I got, the more uncomfortable I felt being around him and certain other family members) and I realized that there was a family somewhere who never knew what happened to their loved one, all they knew/found were his remains YEARS LATER and he was identified through dental records, but his family never got any justice for his murder! But thanks to me they did, the guy's parents passed and one of his brother's died, but his sister's and other brother was still alive, some of his cousins and other family members... And I was more than happy to help those people get justice for the murder of their loved one.

I believe him. He learned a hard lesson that day about racism against black people. He and his friend laughed at the couple being beaten. Thats shocking in itself. It amused them. They must have been raised to not see black people as human or as people with human worth or as equals. He laughs at the memory now. But then... "it wasnt funny anymore" I hope he came from this experience as a passionate adversary of racism and white supremacy. He can help by telling his truth of what he saw. What these two couples went through is absolutely harrowing and the monsters that did it... they escaped all justice. They got away with it. Some might still be alive now. That poor pregnant mother. I first heard of this, in the UK, when i was 20 and pregnant, a long time ago. I cried and i shook, for her. I still do. How can there be such monsters? He needs to keep talking. The bridge is unassuming, there is no marker, my wife and I got out and said their names and had a moment of silence. There is another bridge around the corner heading into Oconee, both bridges I am sure can tell a story. Yes, the residents still stare out their car windows when we drove by, I am sure they knew why we were there. It was a sad moment.

Clear their conscience?? He was child who watched cops kill people?? To a child who are they to trust if they can’t trust the cops?? What this child witnessed CHANGED how he saw racism. And he changed it with his kids and his grandkids. Like he said it came back every year. Every year he thought about those people. That shows that man has no hate in his heart. Just compassion. Or else he wouldn’t have given them another thought. “Just another dead black person” is what a racists says. They don’t care and hey don’t think about it again. Have these feelings towards the people who deserve it. Not men like this.
