In 1968 when I was 12 years old in the 7th grade, my military family moved to a small town in NW Florida, near the Gulf of Mexico, when my Dad retired from the USAF. When my parents enrolled me in a nearby public school I thought they had put me in prison. I finished that school year, but for the next '68 - '69 school year my Mom sent me to St. Mary's Catholic school. The first day of my 8th grade the entire school along with all the children and nuns met in church and sang this song. I believed (and I still do almost 50 years later) it was the most beautiful song I ever heard. I also felt exactly the same way that you did when you first heard this. As I sang along trying to learn the words, I will not ever forget the feeling of innocence and joy I felt so many years ago.
