Aside from streaming music by Bluetooth, something my wife had discounted when she first got her hearing aids but LOVES now, what she REALLY likes about Bluetooth is having PRIVATE phone conversations (one side) again, after YEARS of having to use SPEAKERPHONE on her iPhone in order to hear the phone call conversation.

Thanks so much for this presentation. In 2016, i had my first made for iPhone hearing aids, and they were lifechanging. Instead of hearing on the phone with one ear, I could hear in two. That made my phone conversations so much clearer. I liked it so much that I don't use my home phone anymore. Now with this LE audio, I cannot wait till all hearing aids are coorporating this. I have a brother who is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. He doesn't have a smartphone. So it would be so cool to share the listening experience with him. It's about damn time!

hi dr Cliff, as a hearing impaired older man, can you offer advice on any consumer products that may help my one on one conversational hearing in public. i’m thinking of a simple setup of good quality earbuds, mybe apple airpods, working together with a bluetooth directional/omnidirectional lapel mike worn by other party. a tone control would be useful for my high frequency loss (~70 db both ears), but not essential. so instead of costing $3000 for pair of hearing aids, would cost me only ~$350. would expect 8hrs battery life from the setup. any ideas, mybe an Apple retail store could advise me if feasible ? most important is reliable pairing.

Thanks Dr. Cliff for sticking with Android!❤ I will be getting the newest Oticon Intends next week. My Galaxy S21 does not have LE Bluetooth. Is LE Bluetooth in the HA's backward compatible- i.e. can I still stream? I know I won't get all the benefits. Financial I am not set up to get new HA's and phone in the same year.

Great content as usual! I have a question though, when fitting a patient, is there criteria that you follow to put them into hearing aids that adjust programs by themselves or do they have to do it on their own through their app on their phone? In other words, is this a brand specific feature? Does this also depend on the persons level of hearing loss? G

Your Hearing Care Professional should be able to tell you this information. In reality, bluetooth performance will vary depending on firmware updates in your hearing aids and software updates of your wireless devices. It might be a non-issue & then become an issue based on these updates.

@Dr. Kelsey Beck: You think the manufacturers made all tech levels Bluetooth compatible for OUR sake? They did it for themselves. Think about it: now they don't have to supply us with replacement cables when they go bad since we hardly use them anymore. Likewise, it pushes consumers towards RICs and BTEs even more, which are cheaper for them to manufacturer and require less repair work. It was mutually beneficial decision on their part, but it wasn't just for us. They benefit significantly.

I am a die-hard Android user. I use Phonak because they got it right for Android because they use General Bluetooth. The Asha protocol for low power on Android is one way and terrible. It's 2024, and it's time for Apple to get on the LE Bluetooth Audio bandwagon. My Galaxy S24 Ultra and my Galaxy Buds 2 pro have LE Bluetooth Audio today. The top requirement of my next HA's is LE Bluetooth Audio.

I just was fitted with my first pair of hearing aids (Jabra Enhance Pro 10) the other day. I was really disappointed when I found out my phone (Moto G Stylus 5G) doesn't support streaming or phone calls to hearing aids. I'd asked before the purchase, and was told, oh yes, you can stream and talk on the phone, but when we tried it, it didn't work, and she said oh, your phone must not be on the list. It turns out the list is iPhones and Samsung, and that's about it. I like my phone. I'm not going to go out and buy a new phone to get it to work. The hearing aids cost a lot, and I'm not made out of money. All phones should just support hearing aids.

I have the moto g stylus 5g (2022) and I’m using the Kirkland signature k9’s from costco (they are phonaks which use classic Bluetooth). I can stream phone calls to my aids and also connect them via Bluetooth to my pc. If I want new aids though, costco doesn’t sell phonak now and I will have to look elsewear because I don’t want to buy an iPhone.

The part of where you talk about market share of Android / iOS is hilarious. Cliff basically says Android no longer owns the world market share and Kelsey corrects you. Then you both slowly convince her that she's wrong. Android is actually around 70% of the phones in the world. At some point it would be good to have an expert from the BT SIG come on for a call and answer questions.

Hey Dr Cliff, I was surprised also you didn't comment or rate different brands, specifically the Resound Nexias and new Oticon Intent. Especially as an S22 Ultra user I can't use my Nexias LE Audio since it's not compatible but don't want to buy a compatible S23 since the S24 came out but isn't compatible yet. What's the Android answer?? Lol. I'll admit for a second I thought about switching to an iphone then almost smacked myself for thinking that. Since you have a voice with the hearing aid manufacturers you should tell them to focus on the top Samsung phones like S24 Ultra and get it as reliable as iphones. Stop wasting efforts on other android make/models since it's an uphill battle they can't win. Android hearing aid users will buy that model if they get the same features/reliability as iphone and who knows maybe Samsung will incentivize manufacturers.

First I'm an android user (Samsung a14 5g). And I firmly believe Apple devices are way overpriced. Regarding this broadcast I think you are ignoring the lag in (every bt device that I have used) bluetooth transmitters. It canbe highly annoying especially when using bt for tv streaming. And for me tv streaming is the most important hearing issue.

I use Android devices because Apple is too expensive and if you have an older model that can't be upgraded to the latest ios you can't use your apple device. I also use Phonak because they work with my hearing aids better. I have found that hearing aids do not give me the fidelity that good headphone or in ear devices.

Dr. Cliff, You seemed to be proud that you are a rebel and don't turn your iPhone to "airplane mode". That tells me that you have no idea why there is an FAA regulation that everyone, by law, has to turn their phone to airplane mode. I won't go into the technical details why there is a regulation for this. The bottom line: in some rare cases a smartphone, that is not in airplane mode, may interfere with with aircraft landing navigation signals. My cousin told me, "I have flown hundreds of times and never turn my iPhone to airplane mode and I'm still alive". This reflects todays trend in society of not following the rules because they don't see any reason for the rule therefore I'm not going to follow it. Some of todays commercial aircraft have shielding that protects smartphone interference. BUT SOME DON'T. So, are you going to be the one that refused to turn their smartphone to airplane mode and caused the aircraft, in a minimum visibility condition to get a bad radio navigational signal and miss the runway? What are the chances of that happening? Probably one in a hundred thousand or even greater. So your probably ok until your on that one flight that is landing in minimum weather conditions, and on an aircraft that hasn't been modified, and has a less experienced pilot that can't see the runway until just before touchdown, and is going over 150 miles per hour, and there is a bad crosswind, and misses the runway? I hope I'm not on that flight with you. There are reasons for the FAA regulation to turn your smartphone to airplane mode.

Using Airplane mode on a cellphone is a myth that was debunked years ago. Fact: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted a study in 2012 that found nearly zero conclusive instances of aircraft disturbances from cell phone usage. Most of the evidence on this seems to be anecdotal or severely outdated. But if you feel that it's important to use Airplane mode, then you do you, but it won't really matter.

@@26jdowns OMG: this is a hearing aid channel and not a place for debating whether we should follow FAA regulations or not based on what we read on the internet. I apologize for opening this can of worms. My reason for saying anything at all is, as a commercial pilot, I feel responsible for the safety of my passengers. So, I believe in complying with “ALL” FAA regulations, even if I think they are outdated, or I read someone’s opinion debunking a particular FAA regulation. The truth is that we still need conclusive studies that can 100% ensure safety during critical phases of flight. For example, 5G technology (not around in 2012) is encroaching on the radio bandwidth of aircraft navigation systems; we’ll need more research to answer the 5G question regarding interference with aircraft navigation during landings in extremely low visibility weather. Of course, it’s not a problem if I can see the runway. But sometimes I cannot until right at touchdown. I have to trust, 100%, my navigation equipment. If there is even a small chance that someone with their smartphone, or laptop, or some other electronic device (not in airplane mode) can cause even the slightest interference with the radar altimeter/navigation equipment, even by a few feet or a degree or two, I would rather not take that risk. I don’t think that most passengers would like to take that risk either. But unfortunately, there are still lots of people who disregard the FAA regulation to turn their cell phone to airplane mode because they read somewhere that it is an outdated regulation or more often don’t fully understand the ramifications in severe critical flight conditions. When I read the study that can guarantee 100% safety, I’ll leave my electronic devices on. Apparently, you have read that certified study. Please provide me the link to that study so I can leave my electronic stuff on and not worry about a low visibility, high crosswind, icy runway, blowing snow 100% safe landing. I look forward to reading that report. Maybe we can change the FAA regulations. In the meantime, feel free to ignore any FAA regulations you think are not for you. I personally will follow them until rescinded. And for you that are reading this that are not part of this discussion, you will feel safer to know that Delta Airlines has recently decided to continue enforcing all FAA regulation until further studies are done that can 100% ensure the safety of their passengers during those rare critical landing times. Many of the European airlines don’t enforce it. FLY Delta.
