It sucks so much for Luffy. In Sabaody he couldn’t save any of his friends, in Impel Down he couldn’t get Ace out of prison and he got saved by Bon Clay in such a heartbreaking, he made a lot of sacrifices with the hormones from Ivankov which shaved off years of his lives, went to hell and back, literally was on the brink of death, and just when we thought Luffy was in the clear after freeing Ace from his chains, Ace still died. This is such heartbreaking and gut wrenching moment for Luffy to go through.

It’s been 6 years+ for me and this still hits hard.

just to clarify, Garp was never okay with Ace’s execution but the reason I interpreted that he was so furious with Akainu is either: 1. Ace escaped and Garp didn’t act, suggesting he did want Ace to get away and have one more chance at life. 2. Akainus method is brutal, essentially scorching and boiling Ace from the inside out. With the execution planned, his death would have atleast been quick and peaceful.

I cried alot when ace died but when luffy started to cry...i just can't crying more...thats the hardest thing to watch..

It’s not luffy being in denial or ace’s final speech that breaks me every time, it’s those final moments of the episode when Luffy is just wailing in agony... You feel it so deep because you’ve been with him from the start, you know everything he’s been through, you’ve seem him bounce back and overcome it all with a smile but then this happens, he saved Ace only to see him taken away right before his eyes and you can tell, our rubber boy snapped like a twig

..... and now we come to the breaking point of the series. i have seen many reactors break down, rant, cry and even take breaks after the death. i understand. i think even when the manga was out, it had breaks if i recall. this moment hurts more when you remember Ace wanted to find that answer to if he was worth being born and he was.

Akainu is too good at getting into the heads of the rest. He knew that Ace detested Roger and adored Whitebeard, and to insult Whitebeard by comparing him to Roger to someone who is hot headed like Ace. I imagine many know by now, but Ace's death was apparently on Oda's mind since Krillin first death and try to recreate the feeling of seeing his whole school crying and announcing the death. Ace's death apparently not only achieved that, it made many who read the series and were already working adults cry in public places (train stations, stalls, etc.) when reading the chapter of Manga with the death of Ace and his last words.

I got spoiled on Ace’s death so it didn’t really affect me, but when I went back and watched it a second time after catching up it hit me so hard.

One of the most emotional sequence of episodes in anime. From the soaring highs of jubilation to the very rock bottom of despair and loss. Noone is unaffected by these episodes.

Animated deaths all ways hit harder then live action, because at the end of the day a live action character is a actor that does not really die in the movie or show, but when a animated character dies they don't go home after, in that pocket of reality they are dead.

Also on luffy reaching for the vive card. He couldn't move well due to taking uh I forget his name iva's hormone boost too much. I can get people saying luffy should've ignored the card and got out but he overstressed his body twice and the relief from finally getting ace and escaping got to him before the adrenaline could continue supporting him to escape.

I feel like Whitebeard asking Ace if he was a good father is such a powerful moment for two reasons: First: He is the strongest pirate in the world, a man confident enough to challenge the full might of Navy HQ. But this may be the one thing he feels a degree of insecurity about, simply because it was so deeply important to him. Which ties directly to the second point. Which is: Having a family was his life's dream. Most likely because he never had one as a child. Which means he never had a father figure as a role model and now he wants to know, if he did a good job as a father. He needs to hear it from Ace, the son who initially rejected him, so that he can die in piece, knowing that he truly achieved his dream.

This was one of the best pre-reaction discussions you ever had, I think you two are close to understanding what haki is about, but mostly, Erza's insight on Whitebeard was on point. I never thought of it that way, but it makes total sense with him being the "Father".

Luffy can not take Garp at the moment and that is why Sengoku said "You're still their parent after all, Garp", he knows Garps strength and knows Luffy cant take him, especially 1 shot. I think this arc is probably the one that made me use the most tissues. Oda is so good at bringing these characters to life and making you care about them. It's alot to process but tears are to be expected with OP.
