Outstanding Analysis! I have a Garmin VA3 (soon to own a Fenix 6 Pro) and my experience with wrist HR is similar to your findings. I especially notice its slow to respond to increases in HR when I'm cold, first thing in the morning or have been sitting still for a long period. Once I'm warmed up it seems pretty good. It make sense that the Polar OH1 is more accurate because it's attached to a larger part of your body, closer to your heart and has access to more blood vessles... at least that's my theory :) Also the erratic readings I've found occur more when it's too loose. Another thing altogether is vibrations --- they can really throw it in a tizzy such as riding in a motorboat, lawn mower, snowmobile etc. I think the vibrations from the machinery being absorbed by your body and transmitted to your veins/vessels give false indications. Anyway thanks for a great comparison.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting thoughts about vibration. You're probably right but I have seen similar results when road running as well. Interestingly the OH1+ is more accurate than my watches even when I attach it to my wrist. I'm assuming it has much brighter LED's because it has less of a power concern only doing HR rather than a watch doing other stuff. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, amazing review! I just got the OH1 one and it is great indeed. Much easier to use than the chest hr sensor. I hate chest hr sensors, I just don't like to wear anything in my chest. I found out that OH1 breaks easily the conenction to your heart rate. It tries to follow the hr by the software algorithm and does great job. I believe your "drop" in hr is because of bicep/tricep moving and breaking the measurement. Software compensation is very good and the hr measurement is suprisingly accurate. Great sensor, I love it!

I'd be curious to know the difference in average HR over the course of your test... Cause if it's only +/- 2 bpm, the only time I could see this being an issue is for lab/medical testing or "maybe" for professional athletes. I'll be doing some similar test while biking on Zwift (945 vs. Wahoo chest strap vs. Wahoo forearm strap). Curious to find out. Thanks for your channel. Super interesting and well produced... It mostly comes down to the placement as seen with the good performance of the OH1, the top of the wrist is really NOT a good spot to measure HR, it's bony, not much flesh. Turn the watch around and it will help TREMENDOUSLY ! I do that with my FR935 when I forget my HRM-Run "Red" chest strap. And always do that with the Polar Ignite I use for HRV tracking on my right wrist.

Great review and was exactly what I was looking for. I have a Garmin too. I find it's fine for runs, walks, etc. But, when I'm working out with weights, it completely falls off. My only guess is that something happens with weight lifting where my wrist area changes composition enough that the sensors can't find my heart rate. I've tried wearing it super tight and loose...doesn't change. That's why I'm looking at alternatives. I was hoping to see a Polar OH1 vs Scosche, but I know the Polar brand is great.
@dresden_slowjog
@dresden_slowjog 4 жыл бұрын
@John Shipps, During weightlifting exercises with flexed muscles in the forearm bloodflow is constricted. Therefore the pulse rate is notoriously measured too low or not at all with optical wrist devices. Pulling it tighter constricts the blood flow even more. In this case a chest belt works better. I read this somewhere on a manufacturer's homepage literally minutes ago.
@amyxu4313

I have the same problem as you have. The heart rate goes up to 180 during weightlifting which is absolutely incredible. While I put Gamin Fenix 5 on the right wrist, it shows only 110. I wonder the calorie consumption result is also not right because of the inaccurate heart rate meausred.

Hi - I enjoyed the video - very good! I watched quite a few when looking for a reliable heart monitor. I opted for the Polar H10 chest monitor and a Polar M430 watch (it's an older model now, not 'elegant' but works very well!). The chest monitor is the best way to go. Feels a bit 'odd' wearing it initially, but I don't notice it now, although for longer sessions the OH1 band is a good alternative if you don't like the chest option. The thing about the H10 and the OH1 is that each has an option to record the workout away from the phone - you just need the phone to start/stop the session. My H10 will connect with my phone to show readings at the same time as my bike computer and M430 watch if I want to do that. But, I would say that the M430 watch on it's own is just as accurate but it's the position on the wrist that is key. Once the position is right, it mirrors the chest monitor with a few seconds lag at times, and I think that is where a lot of wrist based monitors have issues, rather than with the equipment itself, and that's why certain activities such as weight training and HIIT classes don't get good results. A snug fit about an inch above the wrist 'bump' seems the best position - feels a bit unnatural for me personally, having a watch that high, but it seems to be the best place. I think that's why the OH1 band gets good results too, on the forearm or bicep - consistent, stable contact.
@skycrafts5140

@Laika I've not experienced that - and you can use it on the forearm if it doesn't sit well on bicep.

@Laika Yes. That's the one I use most. It's accurate and it links to the polar app in the phone and my polar watch. Some people aren't keen on chest straps. It feels a bit odd when you start to use it, but I don't notice it now.

@@laurensbruijn7466 I find the M430 is good as a tracker. The reason for using the H10 is the consistency and quick, accurate heart monitoring. I'd say for running the M430 would be fine, but like a lot of wrist trackers you can get a slight lag. But generally it does a good job by itself.

It would be the same problem with the Coros Apex pro or the Polar Grit X. The Wrest measurement is light based, and you allways have sun light lightning in the sensor on your hart wrest. You don't have this problem anymore with a measurement on the upper arm, where the skin ist fatter and smoother. Try the OH1, it my recommandation ;-)

I have a Fenix 6 and find it is great for the majority of the time, but is incredibly sensitive to wrist fitment and strap tightness! The TomTom I had before was the same, however it refused to go above 158bpm, even if I was breathing through my ear canals and butt, the Garmin will go as high as 190+. Fitment is key with anything trying to sense on a high movement/inertia body part such as a wrist. So unless you have an optimum wrist size (for the watches sensor), you will always have good days and bad days with variations accordingly! It's even worse on my MTB as the shocks through my wrists on bumps can throw it way off for a minute or two. I wouldn't expect it to be flawless in these scenarios! For what I do, my Garmin rocks. I was thinking of buying a Garmin chest strap to do a comparison, but cannot justify the expense. Great video, it would be good to see a Garmin strap up against the Fenix 6!

Great video. I just discovered your channel and have been going back through the older ones. Very informative stuff! I had a question regarding how an auxiliary HR sensor works with the Fenix 6. Do you have to be engaged in an activity in order for a chest strap sensor to relay HR data to the watch, or will the watch and the sensor still communicate with each other even if the watch is in regular "watch mode"? The reason I ask is that I use a Garmin Tempe sensor and it only relays info to my watch when I have selected an activity. Thanks.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! You are correct. External sensors only work during activities and not during "normal watch mode" this is mainly because HR sensors battery life isn't really suited for 24/7 use. But it would be nice if Garmin gave us the option. Hope that helps!

@@ChaseTheSummit That makes sense and I suppose really, the wrist based HRM is fine for when I'm not in full on exercise mode. I guess you really only need the enhanced accuracy of something like a chest strap when you're reaching the upper limits of effort/exertion. Thanks for the reply.

@5kribbles
@5kribbles 2 жыл бұрын
when my wrist based garmin hits a heart rate wall like that it is usually to to locking on to the wrong signal. It would be interesting to see what your steps per minute is in these cases. when the heart rate passes 160-165 beats per minute the watch can get confused and lock on to motion of the blood and arm at that cadence. you can solve this by holding your arm more still in front of you for a few moments, or changing your cadence momentarily.

I have been using a polar watch the last three years and it works fairly well but notice it does take a little bit for the heart rate to catch up to what is really going on. I just needed to order something new to keep me motivated. I do love my polar chest strap but is probably 12 years old. At my sports club we compared different monitors and the apple watch is probably as good as any other good optical sensor that you were on your wrist. If it sits really tight you get ok results. But it was always behind the professional gear and had a more steady curve compared to other wrist bands we had. So it didn't adjust as fast as others or smothend the line in the programm. Also nothing was as good as a good chest strap. They were the most accurate at any sport.

For the life of me I can't find someone who talks about features. A lot of us would love to ditch our HR straps but I can't figure what I'd be giving up (if anything). I currently wear a Garmin HRM-Tri with my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus. Can I assume the only thing I'd give up if I moved to the OH1 or Scosche24 is running dynamics? The difference between the H9 and H10 is that the H9 is a simple ECG chest heart rate sensor where the H10 has internal storage and also collected additional running dynamic metrics. Both bands offer a BLE or ANT+ connection. The HRM Dual is essentially the same as the H9 in that it's a dual band (BLE + ANT+) ecg heart rate sensor made by Garmin.

Seems like Garmin's sportwatches with "ELEVATE" optical heartrate sensor like you said after it hits a wall at threshold heartrate 160 bpm (85%) are not suitable to pick up the heartrate zone 5/5, wich is important if you 're doing High Intensity (anaerobic) Interval Trainings (HIT) or cardio above FTP. My Polar Vantage M is able to pick up my heartrate all the way up above threshold into zone 5/5 at 99% of my maximum heartbeat. If the band is real tight during cycling and even during swimming. Only downside is even when the Polar Vantage is connected to my bicycle powermeter on ble it does not show power watts during the training only in the short summery afterwards with average and max. Also Polar's Fitness fitspark feature is less custom programmable than Garmin Fenix 6 animated fitness workouts. So about powermeter compatibility , custom workout programs, mapping : GArmin does this a lot better with showing live power meter readings and allowing more in depth metrics like Normalised Power. That is why my perfect ideal sportwatch would be: the Garmin's Fenix Pro Firmware & software with connect iq apps and eco system of workouts, routable mapping in combination with the accurate Polar's precision prime optical sensor in it. That would be the best of both Worlds.
