Linguist and Writer Robert Fouser 언어학자 로버트 파우저의 도시탐구기
Robert Fouser is an American linguist who is deeply into Korean culture.
He started learning about Korea by studying the Korean language at Seoul National University in the early 1980s. He fell for Korean culture through living in the traditional Korean house, hanok, in Chebu-dong, Seoul.
Since then, he has steadily written about Korean culture. In 2016, he garnered attention from Korean readers as he published the books, "Conditions for Citizenship in the Future: A Manual of Democracy for Koreans" and "Seochon Hollik," both of which he wrote in Korean.
The Korean language is just one of the many foreign languages he has studied. In 2018, he published his Korean book "The Spread of Foreign Languages" based on his decades-long study on foreign languages, which again, caused a sensation.
Recently, he returned with a new book written in Korean. His latest book "Discovering Cities with Robert FOUSER" is a recollection of his exploration in 5 countries including Korea and 14 cities.
Unsurprisingly, his hobby is to explore hanok and the old villages in Korea. On today's Heart-to-Heart, we'll hear from Robert Fouser, who is passionate about Korean culture.
한국문화에 빠진 미국인 언어학자, 로버트 파우저. 1980년대 초에 서울대학교에서 한국어를 공부하면서 한국과 인연을 맺은 그는, 체부동에서 한옥 생활을 하며 한국문화에 매료되었다.
이후 꾸준히 한국 문화에 관한 글을 써온 그는 지난 2016년 직접 한국어로 쓴 책 [미래 시민의 조건], [서촌 홀릭]을 출간해 한국 독자들의 주목을 받은 바 있다.
한국어 외에도 다수의 외국어를 공부한 로버트 파우저. 그는 지난 2018년, 수십 년간 외국의 언어를 연구한 경험을 담아 한국어로 쓴 [외국어 전파담]이라는 책을 출간, 또 한 번 독자들의 뜨거운 관심을 모았다.
그런 그가 최근 한국어로 집필한 신간으로 돌아왔다. 새 책 [로버트 파우저의 도시 탐구기]에는 그가 직접 다녀온 한국을 비롯한 다섯 개 국가, 열네 도시의 답사 기록과 골목길의 정취가 담겨 있다.
