Tulsa Native James "Quick" Tillis became a famous boxer in the 1980's, but his homecoming and retirement have been less than heroic. Tillis tries to rekindle his fame after years out of the spotlight.

Solid boxer. He moved like Ali in the Tyson fight. Loved watching him fight

James quick tillis for me never fully reached his potential. He had the natural ability, jab and footwork to go much further than he did. The first time I saw James when he fought Mike weaver for the heavyweight title and I believe James with the right motivation, training and drive had the capability of winning that fight. James also went the distance in a very good fight with Mike Tyson and won 4 of the 10 rounds on 2 of the judges cards. Tillis also had a very good fight with an unbeaten Biggs and gave pinklon THOMASa few scares before he was stopped. James fought everyone in the heavyweight division back in his day and lost a few he was more than capable of winning. I have nothing but respect for James quick tillis and with the right determination and desire, who knows what James could of achieved back in his day.

My uncle use to be friends with him. He liked him a lot. They both loved and owned horses. I met JQT a couple times. He was a nice man.

Tillis was a good fighter but he couldn't beat the best which is where the money is and was happy to quit against a great in Evander Holyfield and be pulled out against Frank Bruno and Gary Mason which you just can't do if you want the big purses. I hope he gets himself sorted, he is so well known to ageing 80's boxing fans by fighting many contenders of the era and there must be some money in that.

Tillis had Weaver beat! What a shame! Dude had courage and skills. Doubt Tillis made 10 million, but three, four, or five million is a realistic stretch..... Figure all the deductions... manager (20%), corner (10%), IRS (40%) he might have cleared a bit over a million if lucky. $100K a year over 15 years net is a very good life. It would not have mattered how much he made (see Tyson). Agree with other comments, there should be a 10% percentage set aside in IRA's for all athletes under a certain age.

Sadly this kind of story about boxers gets played out time and again. Tillis did really well against Tyson. In his autobiography Tyson says that he hurt for a week after their fight. That's how much Tillis put on Tyson.

Late to the party, just saw this pop up in my feed. He was a solid pro. Not a great fighter, but he was tough and knew his business. I hope he is doing well.

Sad story but sadly it's the Norm Mathew Franklin and James are the usual end up broke and forgotten good fighters but poor money Managers I don't like Floyd but I hope he doesn't go broke

Everyone is a poor money manager when you make millions at 18 or your early 20’s unless you have trust setup in your name watched by someone else. A lot of white Hollywood stars and rock stars go broke as well but only black athletes get the bad media stigma of going broke. Racist propaganda. White men on Wall Street lose it all and kill themselves quite often. But there isn’t a stigma attached to Wall Street. The other thing is that white celebrities have far more opportunities to have a resurgence or second career than black celebrities. So if you go broke the first time. Then you can make some more money 10 or twenty years later.
