It was the year that soccer hooligans rioted in Lansdowne Road, Jack Charlton retired, and Ireland voted to allow divorce. 1995 was also the year Whipping Boy released their stunning second album Heartworm.
Recorded between September and November 1994 in Windmill Lane Studios, it included tracks such as Twinkle, When We Were Young and We Don't Need Nobody Else.
It's an album that is highly respected by many music fans. It's emotional; it's powerful; it's timeless. And it’s about to be reissued on double vinyl and cd, featuring a number of b-sides and demos.
Whipping Boy consisted of Ferghal McKee on Lead Vocals, Paul Page on Guitar, Myles McDonnell on Bass and Colm Hassett on Drums. Formed in Dublin in 1988, they initially went by the name of Lolita and the Whipping Boy before shortening their name when their female guitarist left the band. Throughout their career, the band released three albums on three different record labels. But it is Heartworm, released on Columbia records, that has cast the longest legacy.
Paul Page’s guitar work is never flashy. It always serves the overall sound. And the orchestral strings peppered throughout the album accentuate the raw emotion bound within it.
Sadly, the album cannot be viewed as a commercial success. It has however gone on to achieve cult status as one of rock’s great overlooked albums.

i too was blessed - in a second hand on William St. in Sydney in the summer of '99 - flicking through mountains of CD cases - then, with almost a pre sense tingle - i flipped, and there it was - staring up at me 'Heartworm' - a genuinly odd and comfortable feeling - at the time, I was on my own in Australia - and I listened to this everyday just walking round the streets, giving me a 'readybrek' home glow and connected me to home and my brothers who put me on the band 5yrs before. also, shout out to 'Adorable' - another epic band where the sliding doors saddly slammed shut

I don't know how the angels found me in my small town in Canada and blessed me with Heartworm, I think I was rather lucky, but to this day I still have the cd as evidence of my love of this album. Completely brilliant, undeniably poignant and beautiful in its melancholy.

Great interview. I'm not ashamed to say that I've struggled with mental health issues, and I'm not ashamed to say that the anger of Heartworm keeps me going.

I rarely make the effort to comment on videos, but feel compelled to express my joy at the re-release of Heartworm; my love of this album; darkness and unsettlement included, and my Love and appreciation to the whole band, and especially to Paul in this instance. Great interview lads. p.s. - Astronaut Blues is one of my favourite Whipping Boy songs 😉.

p.p.s. - Is there any way ye could get back in contact with Paul and ask him about the 'Red Box' RTE/MTV (Live 'n' Direct) collaboration, broadcast on RTE in 1997. Is there any possibility of a DVD release of this footage. I did ask Fearghal about it on the 2011 tour, but he said MTV own the copyright.

I bought it on CD back in the day, it was a CD phase I was going though, In a local pub about a week later I noticed somebody had bought the blue vinyl copy I had passed up on for the CD. I instantly had buyers remorse. And it was very hard to track down. So delighted with this reissue. The album sounds incredible, well pressed and an excellent remaster. Hard to believe now the album is a quarter a century old. It's a shame that Columbia did not push it more, but I think that 95 / 96 was a funny time musically, even so, it is a great shame that Whipping Boy did not make it given they made a great second album, and Submarine aint no slouch neither.
