Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge. My 12 year old mini schnauzer took simparica trio in January, he passed away 4 days later…. It’s so scary and these veterinarians literally make you feel like a horrible pet owner if you don’t want to give this poison to your dog… you would think by now we would have safe options 😢

I’ve used 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar with mother in 1 gallon of filtered water. I’ve been using this for almost 9 years. My 8 dogs always test negative. Mosquitoes hate vinegar so by ingesting the ACV makes the dogs smell like vinegar!! Cheap & effective.

I live in Texas and adopted a heart worm positive Bulldog. I was told by my Vet to get injectable goat ivermectin and give to this orally to my dog and my other two. Much more reasonable and easy to give.

Yes, I agree that’s a good option. I know somebody in Mississippi that gives their dog ivermectin orally once a month. And their dogs have never had heartworm. And they live in an area with very high numbers. if I lived in an area with high heartworm numbers, I would definitely use that method.

I love how honest and open you are with your information and opinions! I chose to stop HW meds 20 yrs ago and have never had a dog test positive in all that time. What I do is boost their immune systems as much as I can through healthy homemade diet, avoiding toxins (including rx, preventatives, vaxx, lawn and household chems), regular detoxes. Dogs live inside and arent out at peak mosquito times. Whenever we go somewhere buggy (hikes/lake/parks/etc) we all use cedar oil spray. It was so scary when I first made that decision, but now I'll never go back to Rx preventatives!

What do you mix with the cedar oil? Coconut oil? Neem oil? Dr. Jones from veterinary secrets has a few flea and tick repellent recipes.

My dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur 5/6 & CHF back in December of 2022 the very next day after receiving his annual Proheart & C5 vaccinations. Now after watching this video and another where you were interviewed by Rachel about vaccinations I’m wondering if it’s coincidence or causation that my dog experienced syncope and CHF the very next day after receiving these injections. There’s obviously nothing I can do about his condition now but I’m certainly more aware and awake for future pets. Thank you for your willingness to share your wealth of knowledge to pet owners.

How do you feel about oregano oil, black walnut, and other natural parasite preventions? I have used them and never have had an issue. Although I do feed raw and lots of red meat which is high in b vitamins that repel mosquitos. My vets are impressed. We do have a lot of mosquitoes and some ticks not many ticks though

Wow- I found this video too late. My dog got pro heart last week. Did not get the paper about it from my vet, and did not know any of this! I am making notes for future visits, so I can do better by my dog!

I live in Florida & am a vet tech. Heartworms & intestinal worms (especially hookworms) are a year round problem. We don't get enough freezing temperatures to kill off anything. My dogs have taken Heartgard Plus once a month, religiously, year round. They have always tested negative for heartworms & intestinal worms. They have lived to 14, 15, 16 & 17 years. I agree about Pro-Heart6 -- horrible! We saw so many reactions that the clinic where I worked stopped giving it well before the FDA pulled it. I never gave it to my dogs. Sad that it came back. *smh*

I'm so confused. So the proheart is the one they use to kill the adult worms? And ivermectin cannot kill the adult worms? But if we use proheart it could also potentially kill our dogs in the process? Or is there a different injection for adulticide(fastkill)? I want to opt for softkill but everything i see so far as scary. They said it's a worst option :(( but after watching this I don't want the injections for my dog.

This was so so informative! I just wish I knew this a year or so ago. I gave my dog the 6 month injection. About 15-20 mins later, he caught an allergic reaction. I lost my mind! I ended up taking him back to the vet screening and hollering!. I never did that again but this vet is so conventional and always trying to give him all kinds of vaccines. I think because of his real food diet and supplements he was probably strong enough to fight off the reaction. Now I’ve learned, no need to put him on preventative every month. Thank you for all of this knowledge.

My dog spends most of his time indoors, and I live in an area where the incidence last year was 8 reported cases, so I'm opting for no treatment. His vet has not pressured me for it and in fact, other than the rabies shot hasn't pressured me for any of those pesticide-type treatments. I'm glad you mentioned ivermectin and the warnings associated with it. There is a product which is 1% instead of 1.87% and I wonder if that product could be diluted sufficiently to make it safe for a large dog. I'd rather make a solution of geranium oil mixed in with a carrier of olive or MCT oil mixed in with organic black cumin seed oil to keep the mosquitoes away.

I use ivermectin compounded because we live in rural Louisiana; but she has hemangiosarcoma! I also use natural oils etc by kin & kind spray! So far she is doing great! No heartworms and she is in everything I can give her for her cancer! All natural holistic foods! So far post dx 9 months! I love her so much and will do anything to keep her here with a great quality of life! Thank you for educating me! Love you 😘

I live in South Florida where there is a high mosquito population. We spray often in attempts to keep them away and I don’t have my dogs outside when the mosquitos come out. I know it only takes 1 to infect them which is why I worry. If I did choose to give meds (Ivermectin like you mentioned) do they have to take them year round or can the medication be taken during the high mosquito months then stopped? Any long term affects of taking the monthly “preventatives” that you mentioned?

What do you think of Interceptor?! I live in Southern California and currently do not give my dog heartworm prevention. She is on a raw diet and is very healthy so I do not think it is needed to poison her. I had a Golden Retriever on Trifexis and he passed away SUDDENLY at 5 and I always wonder if it was the Trifexis. Do you also have any holistic remedies for flea/tick prevention?!

Im in deep rural AL woods. There is no animal control. Lots of strays, not well cared for dogs around. Lots of mosquitos. Tons of ticks. All kinds of wildlife around. We're in a tiny house so he has access to fenced yard 24/7. I have a 5 yr old lab/bassett and Ive been using proheart 6 because it works for heartworm, most intestinal worms, fleas., even though it isnt advertised for all. He did just get treated for tapeworms...the one thing Proheart doesnt touch. I go off of treatment in winter so was only giving 1 shot a yr. No visible effects of shots so far. What should I use since we're pretty much off the chart high risk for everything?

Dr Judy... I don't use any Flea Tick/Heartworm preventative "stuff" (I.e., Heartgard, Trivecta, etc.))). Never will. (use natural sprays, etc) But, my question is this... should one of my Shelties become positive (I test regularly).... I understand that Ivermectin has a risk factor for Shelties.... what would I do if mine became heartworm positive? Just Doxycycline??? Or what would you recommend???

I don't do heart worm prevention. I have my dogs checked twice a year. They are not around other dogs and we don't have strays around me that often. They yard is fenced and they are inside 90% of the time. After researching the heart-worm cycle and infection I decided not to feed my dogs poison 12 months out of the year. We only have 6 months when it cold enough so I just opted for testing. They don't get booster either.

Our old vet taught us to dose our dogs with ivermectin since we are farm folk. I have never had a dog get heartworms, never had an issue and we just use Safeguard to make sure they are wormed for Hooks and rounds.... I know far too many people who lost dogs to those fancy expensive drugs and they were basically told OH WELL... Your dog died...at least they did not get worms! Thanks for warning people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will the bug off garlic powder help repel fleas ticks and mosquitoes? Basically will it keep the mosquitoes away from my dog? It works great for fleas and ticks and I live in a area that doesn’t. Really have heartworm, but my family lives in a place where there’s lots of heartworm.

I live in North Texas and we are technically in the dark orange/red area on the Heartworm risk map. My dogs spend time outside and there are lots of other dogs around. I currently give the Heartgard plus year round because that’s what was recommended and we sometimes have mild winter weather so it’s hard to know how often and how great the risk is. I wish I could skip the monthly preventative but is testing more often enough to stay on top of any potential issues? Could I give every 45 days? I’ve seen other people recommend giving it anywhere from 45 days to every 2 or 3 months. My vet says it stays in my dogs for a day or two and then it’s out of their systems. I still hate giving it and wish a had a protocol where I could be more confident and comfortable

You can stop when it's colder but your dog has to be tested for heartworms before given the preventive again. I give every 45 days based on what I understand from the heartworm cycle. At least I could reduce the frequency to 8 doses a year instead of the usual 12.

I would like clarification on other dogs that may not be treated around my dogs which are treated. We live in the Deep South, hot and humid so we do preventative. But we live in a rural area and some of the neighbors dogs come around my dogs because their dogs are allowed to roam. My guess is that they may not be using preventatives. So even though we do, is it contagious to my dogs? Also, I rescued a dog that is heart worm positive and is currently at the vet getting treatment. Could this dog infect my other dogs?

The risk is if a mosquito bites the infected dog, and the heartworm has time to grow in the mosquito and then the mosquito bites one of your other dogs. So there is a risk from other dogs. Don’t know if it’s the same once the dog gets treatment.

I've been giving my coonhound 'one click's measurement per 50 pounds' of horse paste ivermectin. This is because he absolutely will not take dog meds for this. The horse paste is something he does not mind mixed into his food. Is this okay?

Dr. Judy Morgan, how do feel about Sentinel? Which is a milbemycin and lufenuron combination. I live in North Central Florida where heartworms are a pretty common problem because we have lots of mosquitoes but the fleas are also terrible! I'm terrified of any chemical "preventatives" but Sentinel is the only one I kind of feel okay with giving my dog during the late spring and summer months. Opinions?

I live in north Florida, For fleas / ticks I have been using a daily dose of 1/4 tsp fresh garlic in the food for 17lb dog. So far it is May and no fleas or ticks. I am learning to use the neem oil spray recipe for repelling F/ T as well- mosq are harder to repell. I live in the country on wooded acreage- my dog plays & poops in the woods, but she is usually supervised. I am keeping her in more as the weather is warming up- bc of Heartworm issue. She is now on heartard plus bc reg heartgard has been discontinued. My vet would not give me Inceptor. I take her off everything in Winter- last year that was Nov- March. I also make her food from on- sale ppl grade meats

From what i understand it helps prevent them and other worms too BUT it will NOT KILL HEARTWORMS ONCE THEY HAVE THEM You can put it in there food to detox them or worms and parasites and also put it on their coat to kills fleas.. Its what I use. GOOD FOR ALL ANIMALS. NON TOXIC BUT MAKE SURE U GET FOOD GRADE. Another thing is it's EXTREMELY INEXPENSIVE and SAFER than MOST ANYTHING else .❤

I adopted a Bulldog who was positive for heart worms and the Vet told his foster mom (Has a lot of dogs in her home) to get the injectable ivermectin for goats and give it orally monthly. It only takes 0.2ml so the huge bottle will last for ever.

The injectable is safer. The ivermectin in the horse paste is not calibrated evenly throughout the tube. The dog could be getting no ivomec for months, then slammed one month with far too much, if the paste is used. Don't give ivermectin to Collies or Shelties, it crosses their brain barrier & causes serious problems, including seizures & blindness.

Somebody I know that lives in the south where there is a lot of heartworm gives their dog ivermectin orally once a month. Their dogs have never had heartworm.
