I just bought a heat pump dryer, but I refused the optional warranty for 8£/month. I used to fix my appliances, and this video confirmed that I could still do it if need be.

My Grundig heat pump dryer has stopped heating up. I learned more from this 15 minute video than the last 6-8 hours of research and talking to "experts", who all told me to press the reset switch on my heater. Yes, 3-4 of those hours were spent trying to find the heater in my heat pump dryer. Thank you.

Thank you for this great explanation about this LG. It really helped me fixing a RC7055 dryer. Especially the explanation about the valves, the pump and the condensing unit helped a lot! It was quite an operation but it was worth it!

Thanks mate, that’s a great video. I’m a Plumber/Heating Engineer & nursed along my White Knight gas tumble dryer, but in the end it had terminal problems. Spares for them are not readily available etc. It was so economical to run & now I’ve bought a HP tumble drier I’m worried about the running cost. ‘Erindoors has a Washing on most days & the TD was always on!! Your video has been both insightful & reassuring. I took onboard your point about ambient room temperature & the general operation of these units. Thanks for taking the time.

This is an excellent explanation of the working principles and problem solving of a very expensive piece of kit which due to electricity cost is becoming very common in most peoples homes I really liked the comparison to a dehumidifier, made so much more sense to think of it like that!

You are spot on these machines are basically Dehumidifiers enclosed within a metal box incoperating a drum . I worked for Ebac a major dehumidifier manufacturer and we produced over 20 years ago a drying tent. Basically a breathable material that fitted over a clothes horse with a dehumidifier enclosed, effectively these heat dry pump dryers are the same, but with many more components and yes to go wrong especially the tower style compressors within these machine that tend to become very noisy. Condenser and evaporator coils are notorious for getting clogged up with dirt. So if you're not competent in dismantling your dryer then its wise to buy a warranty . I was tempted in buying one of these heat pump dryers, but after watching numourous vids I'll stick with a heat dryer instead. So if you have your dryer within a garage or cold area a heat pump dryer is not for you.

Thanks so much for this video mate. I was going to buy a heat pump dryer, but couldn't find enough info about them. Yours explained what one is and how it works. After seeing how complex it is I'll be sticking with my White Knight vented for the time being. It's 15 years old, but having a few problems with it. I'll be getting a condenser dryer when it finally does take the knock.

Thanks for the tips, i just picked up an lg 8kg eco dryer (RC8055AH2Z) for £30 as it wasn't apparently drying at all. It was being used in a garage of a house which the owner had recently moved into and i think it's because ambient temperature would be so low. Also it needs stripping and cleaning out anyway.

Thank you for this. I won't be able to sort it out myself but I just wanted to know how they work. I didn't realise about the ambient 15C temperature being the lowest it would work. I'll have to make sure I use it when I'm cooking in the kitchen, in the winter, otherwise it's not going to work at all because I've no heating in my kitchen.

This video has been eye-opening. Been looking at these heat-pump tumble dryers for a while. I knew that they used less energy and lower temperatures than vented and condensing types, but had no idea the temps inside were so low. Was looking through all the spec sheets on these A+++ dryers and many were quoting 2-4 hours for a full cotton load and I couldn't figure out exactly why. Seeing this explains it all, really.

I needed this data because here in Spain these dryers have many leaks when I repair the leak I do not know how much gas to load, since the r134 is not loaded with an ecological substitute. Ask a thermometer do you put it in the filter and the other where you install it? Most dryers have a probe at the outlet of the condenser. You could make a study of that temperature when it is critical. excuse my English

Great down to earth video explaining heat pump technology, maybe you can give me a little bit of advice on my hoover heat pump dryer , I recently purchased a used unit (Hdry 300) and lady said it was working fine but I noticed intake fan was not rotating at all and seemed to be making a noise (drum still rotating ), just need to know if you would expect this fan to be rotating all the time on every cycle?

Great video thanks, there's not enough from actual manufacturers of these products explaining some of the facts and maintenance issues with these heat pump dryers! Any ideas on what could cause the evaporator in mine to start getting warm after about 45 minutes of running? It is definetely cold to touch initially then definetely starts getting warm and it just keeps running and the drying process never seems to complete, as it's just circulating hot steamy air with no dehumidifing going on. It's a 5yr old Samsung heat pump btw. Thanks!

Hi Jason, just bought a Whirlpool hp dryer and it worked fine for two weeks. Then the drum stopped turning mid cycle. Compressor kept running and the cycle kept timing out. After r a 20 minute pause, the drum resumed turning and the cycle, which had continued counting down, timed out. Clothes were not unsurprisingly still wet. Whirlpool service found no faults but the machine had been unplugged for over a week. The machine did not fail when service was here and they pronounced it fine and further said drum stoppage like this is normal and left. it has performed several cycles since uninterrupted. I noticed the pump had a very weak and erratic stream when emptying and thought maybe an erratic float or poor pump performance might have stimulated the drum stoppage although service said the entire machine would shut down in that case. Without and elementary diagram or ladder logic, I have no way of diagnosing what conditions would hold the drum motor relay out but still allow the compressor to run. ,

Fantastic video, I am a refrigeration technician and was interested to see insudeva heat pump dryer. Is there not a filter to stop the evaporator coil getting blocked with fluff and how easy is it to strip to access the coils etc to clean? in your opinion are standard condenser dryers far more reliable/simple and what brands would you recommend for a low to mid range budget? are bosch worth paying the extra for ?

Good vid it’s making me question mine I’ve got a hotpoint heat pump one one of the latest ones the problem I’m having is that sometimes it sounds like a loud popping noise like when boiling eggs in a pan or doing popcorn on the microwave and I’m getting pritty concerned about it if I do a load of towels because it’s been on for quite a while they smell like rubber but if I do clothes sometimes they smell and sometimes there fine can u help ??

I was just given a heat pump Samsung 1 year old it only just gets up to 27 c cleaned evap /lint filters ,done pump tank flushed an primed pump blew through pipes..should add unit mint in drum ..thank you for showing no element cus I was looking for it.. question is why is there no more than a few drops in tank ..could just be the lint under the condenser/evap .ps room temp 17.6c. I would say it only had bout 20 cycles since new ...it's all working just taking 10hours to get to damp.thx

A great video, easy to understand, but what a load of faff with these dryers to keep them dust free, that soup at the bottom sump gonna be lovely in a humid environment if only used once a week ? BUT great for the likes of us who can pick them up broken for small dosh and after a good clean up and test get it working again, I bet an engineer working under guarantee doesnt have a chance to give these such a thorough clean out thats required !!

So lg keep a lower temperature of beko? After a while seems to stabilizing at 45 right? Wich programs you was using? Theres in lg low temperature programs and high one? The compressor pump all the time? Or do on and off like in bosch that when is off steam naturally with the condens your clothes?

Jason, great video with explanation, thanks! I have LG hybrid which has been taking 6hrs to dry, even after that the clothes are still not adequately dry. I have to put the dryer on another couple of time to get it dried. I have another problem, whenever I put it on Turbo(speed) mode, after a couple of minutes the dryer stops with "The duct or lint filter is clogged" error. If I switch the dryer off and on again and put it on hybrid I do not get the error but as I said it is taking far too long to dry. I have stripped the dryer, the only fluff I had was behind the drum at the back, but the heat exchange and fan (attached to the motor with plastic fins) was not covered in fluff. I then checked the ohms readings on heating element, thermistor and thermostat, they are working. I then replaced the main circuit board. The problem remains the same. Do you think the problem is with the compressor? I need to get a digital thermometer (is there one you would recommend?)and do the tests you have suggested. Again, I can't thank you enough for the video!

thank you for the clip I have an LG heat pump slightly more modern than this one which is not drying I hope you can give me tips, I opened it like yourself suspecting fluf or water pump failiure but its so clean inside and water pump working well but the refrigerant evaporator is not getting cold and the condenser not getting hot after running for 15 minutes !!! the compressor is getting hot and i hear humming but no serious heat difference between condenser and evaporator !! can this be empty gas ? or failed compressor ? how can i tell and do they refill the gas ? if the system leaks once it will always leak ?

What a helpful video, much appreciated. Do you have any recommendations on brands that are easier to maintain and clean than others - or maybe brands that have a filter system that's effective? I have a whirlpool that's an absolute pain to clean, as you have to disassembly almost everything, and I'm not that handy to begin with. And the filter system is really bad. So I'm looking to buy something that I can maintain and make last.

I don't know if could help me, but I have a Samsung heat pump tumble dryer, that one day stopped drying the clothes. after a thorough research online, I took everything down and cleaned the condenser into my shower. put everything back, and now, I have the clothes completely dry but, there is no water being condensed. Not a single drop of water. the compressor is extremely hot afterwards and takes hours to cool down. I tested the compressor's fan itself, and it is functioning, tested the thermostat that goes into the compressor and it is functioning. I don't know what is happening. Could it be a leak of refrigerant? if that is the case it seems extremely rare since almost no-one has mentioned it without clear finding of oil drips and other. could it be the condenser cooler fan? not getting any input from the PCB? what else could it be? I would much appreciate your time and help with this matter.

Hi. I have an issue with my Beko heat pump thumble dryer. It stopped drying. I have cleaned everything like in the video and after run the test mod as per Beko instruction. All seems good except last stage, compressor heats up from 20 to 50 deg within 30 min, which looks good. But it still doesn't dry the clothes. Please advise. Thanks

it's probably too late to get an answer from you Jason but i'll ask anyway my wife and I have a Grundig advanced heat pump tumble drier (GTN 38240 GCW) and from day one she has said that she believes it's not working properly because it doesn't even get warm let alone hot...we keep it lint free but she's not a happy bunny....is there any chance of some free advice please.Thank you

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have a Beko heat pumped tumble dryer that is now taking forever to dry clothes. There is little or no water collected in the tank, but I do get it condensing in front of the exchange filter and drips onto the floor. My guess is that the evaporator is not getting cold, but it is still generating heat. I have stripped it down and checked for fluff blockages, but it is quite clean. Would this be a case where it has lost gas, and if so, where does it lose it from? looking at the pipework, it all looks sealed. Also, can you get these re-gassed, or is it a case of buy a new one? Does anyone know what the temperature difference is between setting on delicate and level 2 dryness, no manuals seem to specify degrees C rather they just state a 'lower temperature' .

Hi. I have a Candy heat pump tumble dryer and cotton clothes are not dry at the end of the cycle. I've dissembled the entire machine and it's clean from fluff. Condenser works the first minutes, roughly 9 degrees but after a while temperature goes up to ambient or higher. Compressor is running and the evaporator gets really hot over 50 degrees. Any ideas?

Jason, think I'm having an issue with the heat pump on a dryer I just got as a project. Can you tell me if the evaporator should be cold to the touch? Just had the machine on a cycle for about 45-50 mins and doesn't seem that warm inside the evaporator doesn't seem any colder than the rest of the machine. Can hear the compressor working and have cleaned and checked everything I can see within the machine.

After 4 uses, I realised that I forgot to empty the condensed water tank and I noticed water under the dryer. Question: Is it normal to have some drips of water from that little rubber hose on the left side of the dryer even if the condensed water tank is empty? And should I always have a hose attached so water can be drained from the dryer or is the tank enough> If i dont forget to clean it after each use? Should I let it sit and completely dry off so I can test it for any leakage? Thanks for any tip you can give.

Got a Samsung heat pump. Using abit of sponge over the front of the the heat exchanger on bottom left as mine is the DV90M50003X which does not have a filter covering that like new ones. We use it quite abit and started noticing clothes smelling musty. I removed the pump at the back poured/sprayed water through the front and picked up loads of fluff. Is this a crap design and is the Bosch heat pump with self cleaning a lot more resilient/less maintenance. Boiler engineer so white goods not my speciality.

Hi Jason! I need your help! I brought my German (50hz) bosch dryer self condenser to the US (60hz)..unfortunately it is not working properly.. It is 220 V.. Until here, no problem.. I turned it on, electrics are ok, I checked the timer and it is OK.. But the dryer is not heating up enough.. After the circle, the clothes are only half dry. Do you thing that there is any way to solve this? How generate the heat on this dryer? Is the compressor? If he is 50hz, working on 60hz, he is working around 20% more, and it should be more hot than normal! Please I appreciate your thoughts! Thank you

Great video - How can you check if the refrigerant has escaped? My candy has stopped drying, I've opened it up and got the compressor running. The motor gets very hot but the evaporator and condenser stay roughly the same temperature (room temperature) !

Out of curiosity, is this model using convertible frequency inverter/compressor like the newer ones?

I always get our appliances fixed rather than dumping them for a new one. Got a local repairer out recently and he says our heat pump dryer needs a new pump (it's not heating up) and is basically not worth repairing. Should I get another opinion? He didn't disassemble the dryer fully like in this video.

Wonder if you can help me with my heat pump dryer. Sometimes it works absolutely fine (30%) and other times it just keeps going and the clothes never dry (70%). When it's working after 30 mins or so the sides of the dryer are warm but if it's not working the sides are cold. I've followed the instructions in this video, stripped it down and cleaned out all of the fluff from everywhere but it still only works properly some of the time. Any ideas what may be my issue and what I can do to test?

Great video! Is it LG's "auto cleaning" condenser dryer? They say it washes the condenser automatically, but I see a sheet of damp dust on the condenser. I wonder if the dryer stinks due to the dust on the condenser, the dirty water in the bottom tank, and the water in the pump basin.
