I don’t even care if Conan’s song character or crush is the “gay” one. To me, the song captures a sense of longing to be loved. Longing to be enough, wanting to be something different, coming of age, being human, and struggling with identity and self-acceptance in general. You could swap out the gender identity part with any of our human differences (faith, skin, side of tracks...) and have the same sad story of unrequited love. But, if you can’t love and accept yourself it doesn’t matter who you’re attracted to. So if you need to be feminine to feel authentic, then do that or whatever it takes to be you without harming others.
