A vicious heatwave engulfing Southeast Asia has hit farms across the region especially hard.
Droughts have drastically reduced crop yields, including in durian farms. The pungent fruit is one of Thailand’s most lucrative exports. But the recent poor harvests brought on by warming temperatures have been creating panic among growers and sellers.

no wonder that the Durian sold in China is more and more small. but it is more affordable for the normal families when it is smaller.

1) Not every year will have such a scorching heatwave. 2) As the average temperature rises decade by decade, breeders will have to find/develop more heat resistant durian varieties. This may be difficult and take time, but probably not impossible. 3) Thailand needs to develop and improve its water retention capabilities. One rainy season should be plenty for the whole year, as long as they don't let all the water run straight into the sea. This all costs money, but every country needs to invest in the future.

What are ya talking about? At this rate. Climate change is getting worse. With the ongoing world population ever increasing, more cars/transport producing co2 and increase in livestock is the major reason why all these weather is going crazy. Look at Texas and Brazil with their flooding. It's going to get worse.

i thought hotter/dryer weather gives more robust and flavorful durians? sure the yield is less but the remaining fruit that survives will be of higher quality.
@SlithereenSoul
@SlithereenSoul 26 күн бұрын
Yes it gives a bit more intense flavor to the durian but that doesn't mean better quality and isn't what we are after. The selling point of Thai durians is mild smell and flavor.

I don't understand why farmers use water for durian in tropical climates, fruits in tropical places usually naturally bear fruit every year and can survive relying on rainwater in the rainy season. btw I'm Indonesian.

Thailand's durian industry is facing some tough challenges due to the ongoing heatwave, impacting both quality and yield. 🌞🥭 It's a stark reminder of the far-reaching effects of climate change and underscores the importance of sustainable farming practices for long-term resilience in agriculture.
