Walking along the ridge my sight sees clearly for miles and I hear a woman singing but I do not see her. That morning I'm alone on the rolling hills except her melodic voice follows me for several kilometres with the same amplitude. Moved by the unexpected company, I search for clues, finding only butterflies and fleeting skylarks. I am familiar enough with the ways of the wind to know that this wasn't one of its fancy tricks. Walking along the ridge, evocative words fade and re-emerge on the fickle breeze as though she were singing for me. The fair maiden captures the essence of eight days of walking and sleeping along the English countryside; wild elegance, natural harmony, aesthetic beauty, and even an alluring mystery which at times stirred my concerns into insignificance. Unexpected tears welled-up on several occasions, and I didn't know why until the final stretch of my journey. It makes sense to me now, why I felt an urge to walk and sleep in The Great Mother's embrace. I am grieving and I am bereft. It's unrequited love. It's the seeker who shall never be found. The spark that will lose its form and fade away. It's the dragging of Persephone deeper into the underworld, and my shortcomings and inadequacies as wounded man. All I wanted to say is "I love you".
