Heavenly Sword was released on the 14th of September in 2007 (EU Release Date). It was one of the PlayStation 3’s earliest titles that tested just how far the technology had come and was a true showstopper. Let’s dive into the full history of Heavenly Sword, from its small beginnings to its fade into obscurity. This is Ninja Theory’s Heavenly Sword Explained on the PlayStation Archive!

Great video dude. I only knew about this game cause of that PlayStation smash bros game so it was great to learn more. Your script is always so good to listen to, I loved your mortal Kombat retrospectives so I’m happy to see you continue these explained videos. Keep it up!

I loved heavenly sword. Still have a copy and may play it again soon. I always got to the ending and the last boss fight is pretty difficult atleast when I was a kid. They always talked about a sequel I think staring Kai because nuriko dies in the end game from what I saw. But it never came out and I’m sad. This game could have had atleast 3 games imo. Crazy how it was a 1 and done with how good it was at the time and still hold up today to some degree

I recall there being a lot of build up and hype for Heavenly Sword, with rumours circulating that it was planned to be a trilogy. It's first game came out, an whilst Sony would still talk about it to some degree, it ultimately vanished. So it'll be interesting to learn more about it here. 1:00 - Rather funny to hear the game that would demonstrate the PS3 capabilities was being developed years before the console was even a thing and on the previous system. That said, this seems to be a common occurance. 1:28 - Strange, I always thought Heavenly Sword was a launch title for the system. September 2007 is just shy of a whole year after the system's release. 2:56 - Quite an ironic tale then. 4:32 - The auto-block mechanic is pretty cool. Easy to learn to perform and frees up a button on the controller for other actions. 6:36 - Definitely an early PS3 game with it's emphasis on six-axis. I do like gyro controls controls in my game but I can't think of many cases of the six-axis usage that I found particularly appealing. 9:48 - The two character focus is a surprise, given I've heard it's quite a short game. Seems they managed to pack a good amount in a short time. This upside down sniping sequence looks awesome! 14:01 - That finale sequence as you turn the game into a Warriors game at the end certainly looks a ton of fun. 16:01 - An that's pretty much where I'm familiar with. Strange that Sony were keen to push Nariko as a Sony mascot but not push her enough to get a new game. Perhaps it was because the following game wouldn't have starred Nariko.
