The IMR-2 is a Soviet and Russian tracked Military engineering vehicle built on T-72 main battle tank chassis. Development of the IMR-2 begun in 1970s and completed in 1980, while commercial production commenced in 1982. IMR-2 developed to replace aging IMR which built on the basis of T-54/55 tank. It took part in Soviet-Afghan War, First Chechen War, Second Chechen War and in addition used in relief operations after Chernobyl disaster. In 1980, the combat vehicle was adopted by the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the USSR, and since 1982, its serial production has been organized. The main purpose of the IMR-2 is to create column paths in difficult places for the advance of troops, as well as to create passages in minefields. The armored hull is completely sealed and provides protection of the crew from radiation with a attenuation factor of 10. During combat use, the IMR-2 showed its high efficiency. In addition, during the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, it turned out that the IMR-2 was the only machine that was able to work in close proximity to the destroyed nuclear reactor. Only then this car was appreciated. IMR-2 alone was able to clear the passages to the reactor, perform the necessary measurements, remove the fragments of rods with nuclear fuel scattered around the reactor, the remains of walls. IMR-2 also began to build a sarcophagus around the reactor, delivered and installed crane equipment. Almost all the IMRs who were standing in the ranks at that time ended up in Chernobyl and they all remained there forever. During the operation of the machine, so much radiation was collected that the armor itself became radioactive. Dozens, if not hundreds of IMRs among hundreds of other cars are standing at an abandoned airfield during the war near Pripyat. Later, in the 1990s, an upgraded IMR-2M machine and other modifications were released.
ИМР-2 (Инженерная машина разграждения - вторая модель) - советский специальный (инженерный) танк. За базу было взято шасси основного и среднего танка Т-72, имевшее по классификации ГБТУ обозначение «Объект 637». В 1980 году боевая машина была принята на вооружение инженерных войск ВС Союза ССР, а с 1982 года организовано её серийное производство. Основное предназначение ИМР-2: создание колонных путей в труднопроходимых местах для продвижения войск, а также создание проходов в минных полях. Броневой корпус полностью герметичен и обеспечивает защиту экипажа от радиации с коэффициентом ослабления 10. В ходе боевого применения ИМР-2 показала свою высокую эффективность. Кроме того в ходе ликвидации последствий аварии на Чернобыльской АЭС оказалось, что ИМР-2 единственная машина, которая была способна работать в непосредственной близости с разрушенным ядерным реактором. Только тогда эту машину оценили по достоинству. Она одна оказалась в состоянии расчистить проходы к реактору, выполнить необходимые замеры, удалять разбросанные вокруг реактора обломки стержней с ядерным топливом, остатки стен. Она же начинала возводить вокруг реактора саркофаг, доставляла и устанавливала крановое оборудование. Едва ли не все стоявшие тогда в строю ИМРы оказались в Чернобыле и все они остались навсегда там. За время работы машины набирали так много радиации, что броня сама становилась радиоактивной. Десятки, если не сотни ИМРов среди сотен других машин стоят на заброшенном аэродроме времён войны возле Припяти. Позднее, в 1990-е годы, была выпущена модернизированная машина ИМР-2М и другие модификации.
