The White 2-70 gets another chance at mowing hay this summer. Last year it had water pump trouble before I got much done, this year, it should be ready to power the 10 feet wide Gehl 2360 disc mower.

As a kid we farmed our 200 acres with a 1850 gas tractor as the big horse for a lot of years. 1850 gas as main tillage tractor and a gas1800A series as planter, cultivator, mower, baler and do all tractor. Man I miss Dad all the time and farming sometimes.

I really wanted to try 4th gear, but that temperature gauge was saying don't even think about it. I should have grabbed the infrared thermometer. The aftermarket gauge goes 100 135 160 180, then 240. Who makes a gauge that jumps 60 degrees at the most important range???

Excellent - as a massive fan of gas-powered machinery, this video is awesome, thanks for posting. At the local gas station, gas is 3.50 and diesel is 4.35 so that mitigates the increased consumption

I bought recreational gas that was $4.45, but then I blended in old gas from other tractors so I think that brings the price back down.

It's fun for me to watch "older" White tractors in action. I grew up in Allison, Iowa - 35 miles SW of Charles City. I knew some people that worked at the Oliver/White plant back in the day. I noticed a chance in their looks when production moved to Coldwater, OH. It may have been the same tractors but the look wasn't the same. Most people won't notice any difference but I could tell. Having a White/Oliver/New Holland dealer in town, there many farmers in the area using White power.

We have an Allis-Chalmers 190 gasser on the farm we use for mowing and baling hay. It’s a good machine, and with those AC gas engines being based on their diesel engine counterparts they’re very rugged. It drinks gas, esp when working it hard but it’s very reliable and has such a unique sound compared to the diesel. Great video, love the 2-70! Happy Father’s Day!

My late dad started out with John Deere, a D and 2 model h. When he took over he needed pto power to fill silo, got two Massey Harris with the Chrysler 6 cylinder. Ran good but miserable on the 3 point plow, no draft control. When the 4010 came out he and his brother bought the 1st one the local dealer sold. "More torque, 1/3 less fuel and 1/3 cheaper fuel, what is not to like" Other than the winter starting problems I cannot understand why gas held on so long. Gehl mowers don't pull hard, I started with a Vicon, it pulled easy, ran New Idea after that still have the last one of them, says Massey by Hesston on it but it's a New Idea pulls very light. You wnat a sled try a New Holland, you better have 100 on it. We have something in common, we both had a Hesston Hydro swing. I do NOT miss sickles!

People are reluctant to change, and farmers are no different. Oliver had a program with its early diesels where they would pay for your first year's worth of fuel. That helped sell them some diesel tractors, and by 1955 Oliver had half of the diesel tractor market. Even with reaching that milestone, they turned around and put their research dollars into gasoline engines. They were able to come up with some efficient designs, but they should have been able to see that diesel was the future for high horsepower.

The 2-70 sounds good pulling the disc mower. I can imagine how much fuel that a gas powered tractor that size would burn. The farmer I worked for as a much younger man cut hay with a John Deere 60 gas and the 730 diesel with the 9 ft New Holland haybine. But he always wondered why it would just shred a gearbox every other year. 2 cylinders are hard on hay equipment. Now a 50 did just fine on the Rollamatic rake.

We used a 656 Farmall gas on a New Holland 411 (9ft) discbine for 20 years. about 3 gallons an hour, at 4 or 5 mph. Flat, wet ground. the maneuverability and less prominent ruts are why we continued to use it compared to our bigger tractor. The gas tractors run better the rest of the year when you actually work them for a day vs all the yard putzing they tend to get relegated to in modern times. I tried earmuffs--they amplifed a low bass boom sound that came from the drivetrain so i went with my ears unplugged and will probably regret that in a few years.

Its funny to me that even into the Whites they never switched to the updated dash on the smaller tractors. It would have been cheaper production wise to just have one dash.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
Using the newer dash would have presented its own problems. These still used mechanical brakes, so getting the linkage to work on a dash designed for hydraulic brakes would have added some expense. I'd also be willing to bet the 55 series dash is a little taller and wider, which would have caused problems with the sheet metal. At that point they were trying to keep the smaller models priced lower to be competitive, and all of those improvements would have to be reflected in the retail.

Gehl recommended 80 for this one. It depends on what you are mowing. Most hay you can get by with less, but if you want to mow at 7 or 8 mph in some really heavy crop, you're going to need every one of those 80 horses.

@ThatOliverGuyChris

Yes, if you slow your ground speed the reel will help pull the crop in, but without the reel there isn't anything to move the crop into the conditioning rolls. The discs do lift and push the crop into the rolls, so no reel is needed

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
The engine parts aren't too bad from what I hear. If the rack is stuck, don't try to start it, the engine will over rev. There's quite a few channels on KZfaq that feature Detroit Diesel engines. I think Ol2Stroker has a video on freeing up a stuck rack. A lot of times it's just a matter of pulling the valve cover and getting stuff freed up. Honestly, I don't know what to think of values any more. Especially on rare and popular items like a 1950 and 2255 fwa. Prices seem to be all over the place.
