At 3:20PM Friday, Lehigh County 911 Center transmitted the box for 1690 North Irving Street for multiple calls on a house fire. A chief officer could see a header from the station 33 and transmitted the second alarm.
Catasauqua Ladder 231 and Engine 211 arrived first and stretched two hand lines, one to the garage and one to the interior. Engine 33 arrived and pulled past the Catasauqua companies. There was a hydrant in the front yard of the fire building. Crews found heavy fire from the garage. The roof collapsed above the garage and the fire eventually started spreading in the roof area. Crews went to the roof and cut a hole in the middle of the dwelling. They stopped the fire from extending at that point.
The suffered extensive fire damage and smoke damage throughout.
Irving Street was completely shut down for the duration of the operation.

Don't know about that. Hard to say from a video, been to more than a few house fires where we used the front door / hallway as the cut off point, punch a hole / holes in the ceiling, spray water up / over to the involved side. Second arriving attacks the seat. Not doing something about fire spread / activity, ventilating most likely will spread the fire as flames follow the air path.

For an area that gets a decent amount of work it’s interesting to see where some simple but major missteps can continue to happen. Pump operations and just simply putting a mask on to get close all require minimal effort. It’s 2023 something’s gotta change.

As a career firefighter with 33 years on the job I was surprised to see the primary attack line was an 1 3/4”. When you roll up and have a large volume of fire you should have a large volume of water. A 2 1/2 with a smooth bore would have been my companies first pick. Our 1 3/4 also has a smooth bore. Our nozzle of choice is the TFT Vortex. By using a smooth bore, you don’t beat up the firefighters on the hose line. It requires lower pressures ( 50psi with a 1-1/4 tip flowing 328GPM ) compared to a fog nozzle (100psi 200ft @only 76GPM). My company rolled up on a large light weight construction single family home with the entire front of the house involved and we immediately deployed out deck gun before any hand lines and had 95% of the fire out with only using around 500 gallons of water in less than 2 minutes while our hand line crew deployed a 2-1/2 and finished the job. Total time for complete extinguishment was around 7-10 minutes. Our chauffeur pulled in front of the structure put the truck in pump gear and immediately deployed the deck gun without hesitation for a quick knockdown. The second engine did lay a line to our engine while we checked for extension and did mop up.

I agree, I don't understand why a 1000 gpm or more deck guns are not used for the first attack, I see this time and time again, its almost like they're afraid to use it. I'm a retired Chief officer from a Department less than ten miles away from where this incident occurred , we used to call it the Texas Blitz attack. You can knock a lot of fire down at 1000 gpm, even if it's for only 30 seconds.

I noticed that he was at the door, turning the electricity or gas supply off. I have little doubt that it produced the best outcome at work and back at the firehouse they were all one happy family. Unfortunately, we see plenty of examples of chiefs thinking that they are god, with their crew running around like headless chickens, or doing nothing until he shouts at them.

I watched a video of the Boyd Street fire in LA. One of the reasons no one died is because everyone was masked up and on air. The fire put out an acrid smoke at the beginning that forced many who would normally not mask up or use the air. Those masks can save lives in an instant or over many years. They look like they are extremely cumbersome and uncomfortable. I am sure people are working on new ones that are faster to put on and more comfortable.

Let me educate you for a second. There were 2 lines off, and the one you see had a massive kink in it, leading to decreased pressure. The other line was inside the house. The driver that day is a retired engine chauffeur from a busy city who’s philosophy is not to run 2 lines simultaneously with if one is interior. The hydrant was directly out front of the house. That engine has 500 gallons with those 2 lines, one being a 7/8ths smooth bore, the other being a 150 fog. Both on their own only gives you just over 3 minutes of water with constant flow.

Every department doesn't have the best of the best on every shift. We can always find something to gripe about. In this case, they are at least leaving the owner with something that can be re-built. Although a long time ago, when I was riding as a volunteer, there were not enough packs, so only those going inside got one. Even back then, in a big city department, we had poor SCBA usage. It didn't really matter because the first thing the fire fighters did once they got the fire out was go outside and light up a cigarette! That doesn't happen as much these days. That same department today has packs for everyone and a couple of spares on each truck. Most everyone starts with the SCBA on, and with FLIR camera's on every Ladder Truck, they can find the fire quicker.

Gotta ask because I'm a dumb civvy and I don't know.... Why do they bust out windows and cut holes in the roof? I'd think that would ventilate the fire and help accelerate it. Wouldn't you want to try to smother it?
@joshuawojtunik8599
@joshuawojtunik8599 Жыл бұрын
Helps remove the the heat and smoke from inside to help interior crews. Also venting will help direct the fire up and out through the roof vs it continuing to spread through the building. Fire always wants to go up, so if they can cut a hole and give it a direct path upwards it will take the shortest path. If they didn't it would continue to spread until it found a way.

@@magna116 I live in a PUD (Planned Urban Development). I own the house & property. I can make any improvements to my house inside my four walls. Anything on the outside of those four walls is strictly regulated. My entire front yard is an easement. Other than the driveway & walk to my front door. No other improvements are allowed. The sides of my yard are too narrow because of set backs. My backyard is my only domain that I can alter. If I want to change the color of my house or put a different roofing color? It has to be approved by the association board. Otherwise they have the authority to force us to switch it back to the original color or face daily fines. So far we have put through four proposals for improvements. All were accepted because everything we ask for was tastefully done & improved the look of our house. Otherwise if we didn’t have those rules any asshat could decorate his yard with pitfalls or traps for anyone entering their property. Just like that property owner did in that video. Not sure what a PUD is? Research it with a search engine?

I once fell into a pit on customer property. I was warned after I fell in that there was a very thin board not suitable to support any weight covered with leaves. The pit was deep enough that I had to be pulled out by others with a rope. I’ve twisted my ankle soo many times stepping into holes in customer yards that I know have arthritis in both ankles. People don’t think. Should I fill this hole in or move this hazard? I’ll do it later. Later only comes after someone is hurt.

I believe the horn button in the wheel melts and shorts/fuses so the horn sounds until the battery cooks or someone cuts cables. It was at the end of a long, winding driveway and water had to be supplied from a lake that wasn’t very near by and by tankers. It burned to the ground, literally. It took too long just to establish a water supply. That is one situation where you either pay astronomical home insurance premiums or install a sprinkler system. I vote for the sprinkler system.

There is a good reason for it though. You can see it when the guy takes what I think was a kitchen window. A short time later you see smoke making it's way out there. Less smoke and heat inside means workable conditions and better visibility to get the water on the fire. That doesn't mean they have to take every window though.

You have a white helmet in the hot zone with no SCBA, that automatically showed me they had no clue what they are doing. In my department a white helmet never would have done that let alone let a black helmet do it. I mean I have done it for 10 years and wow.

@@erikih706 Because I've seen too many people lose everything when a fire, like this one, starts in the garage and spreads to the house. A detached garage fire generally stays confined to the garage. The space separation makes all the difference.

I totally agree. While I lived in a home with a closed in breezeway and attached garage for a good part of my life growing up, I would never own a home with an attached garage or a garage in the basement.
@erikih706
@erikih706 Жыл бұрын
I understand the concept you are talking of, but to say to never live in a house with an attached garage, is a little extreme. It’s about calculated risks. I think it would be important to maybe warn people of potential risks, and how to mitigate them. I’ve seen thousands more homes that do have attached garages that have never had a garage fire, than ones that do. I’m thinking that’s at least a .001 chance, maybe even less. What are the statistics, one in every 5000 homes will have a garage fire? That’s pretty low. Like I said, if someone is concerned about an attached garage fire, there is certainly things that can be done to mitigate that risk without having the mindset of never living in a house with an attached garage.
