I remember in the early 90 being on hand and assisting in the Kielder forest for a week during camp, we pulled a Bedford out (plus several extremely tall trees caused to lean at silly angles due to attempted indirect pulls) that was 4 wheel axle deep out of the marsh when it went off road along with several landys, we also recovered a 29 tonne Coles crane that had gone off the side of a "road" into a ditch that then gave way, it was dragged out with the winch with the brakes on the crane wound off (due to knackered air lines) we then recovered it back to the camp on "normal roads" bogie blockers were bouncing in and out due to the weight of the crane hanging off the back

The Foden is a lovely truck to drive, got a mate who has put a Cummins in one. The white smoke has you crying😢. The bar you were on about, for underlift, is referred to as the hernia bar, because it’s ‘kin heavy!

The padlock is issue, but has probably been put there just so that it doesn't get lost - it should be on one of the storage bins. You can get the key code from the back of it, and order a replacement from Squire.

loving the conversation and banter - like you pair were squaddies or something (dread the thought) 'surprised no one died' etc i do remember a pal of mine years back was on Recovery using Fodens, and had to collect a car from somewhere on the base, they used the under lift which apparently is not a good thing to use on cars, when they got to the other side of the base somehow the front had changed shape during its journey like Jo's chit chat, 'never doing that trip again' - its funny but i have had similar thoughts, its great playing with these military machines in the playground, but get on the road and all the play goes out of mind, aggghhhh driving 4 tonnies on the motorway, horrible, the drone of the tyres, i had one stuck in four wheel drive up on Mont Blank, don't ask, it was a long drive black or green - that's the same thought the army had, no one could make their mind up, so vehicles got painted green, and the muppet over night added the black

I once had a three hour trip in the Lovely Foden Wrecker. Me and my Co Driver had broken down in a 14 Tonner (the planetary gears were no longer planetary gears, just a mangled metal mess in the diff). After loading and leaving Neinburg as we had moved from there to Osnabrook as they had closed our camp down. By the time we got back it had lost all feelings in my legs from sitting on the bed, and had to get out of the cab, not pretty as you know it is a bit of a drop from cab to the ground. That was my first encounter with one. Got pulled out of most locations in the Autumn or winter when on Exercise as our 4 Tonner DAFs, and where always overloaded with spare parts as we always break stuff, as nothing is Squaddy proof.

Dear old Dad told me a story about when he was a Cadet on a range trip, a large artillery piece went off an embankment after it's towing hitch broke and had to be winched out!. As the 'manual' labour' Dad and his section had to go down and secure the recovery winch cable hitch. He said 'I looked at the size of the cable, the size of the artillery piece and the recovery vehicle and thought, this doesn't look good and as the recovery vehicle winch took the strain he ordered his guys to 'take cover' and get as flat as possible on the ground as the cable was 'singing' with the weight!. Meanwhile his 'Rupert' was apparently walking around behind the recovery vehicle watching procedings blissfully unaware of the danger!. The winch held.🤣

Errr ..... Is that the ever-so-secret Navy slimline Sea Hawk FGA7 or did some Crab Air bastid nick the folding wings? Meanwhile elsewhere Matt is arguing the Foden needs a Scania V8 14 litre pre-electronics engine .... But then every truck needs a Scania V8 engine. As a retired Scania Master Tech. Rolls Royce got taken over by Perkins about the time the Eagle was launched. The Eagle was a commercial/automotive (cheaper) version or development of their industrial C Series engine. The Perkin Phaser range were developments of their earlier engine range. Although I suppose Perkins may have included the RR Eagle in the Phaser range before it was discontinued, jus for tidiness of the engine range? My god, what a Geek am I?
