I feel like people getting upset over things like color theft, pose theft, referencing, etc stems from this obsession people have with originality- even though you can’t really create anything completely original anymore. Anything you can think of has probably already been done before, but people still have this mentality of unoriginal = bad and that sets an impossible standard for a lot of people.

yeah, i think its just that your pride in your work is dampened if you see something similar to it, so a lot of people react harshly and jump to conclusions and throw out accusations when in reality its entirely possible someone just had the same idea.

@@Froggycolouring its estimated that there are at least 17 million artists in the world. its also estimated tha 77% of all artists use the internet. it is very possible if not probable that at LEAST one person is going to have very similar ideas to you if not more than that there are a LOT OF ARTISTS out there. simple ideas like color choice and poses are not inherently exclusive to one person and have and will continue to be used by others.

i think my take on these sorts of topics entirely depends on where the artist puts their boundaries? like, people tracing or recoloring my art makes me *very, very* uncomfortable, regardless of if its mostly private or just for practice or whatever. i think that while you might not have a leg to stand on with regards to getting mad about some of these, it's just the polite thing to do to not do them if it makes an artist uncomfortable, you know? like -- just because you *can* doesn't mean that you *should*, lol.

yupp!! i think if an artist specifically requests that you shouldnt trace their art, you shouldn't! i know lots of artists who are okay with it for study and lots who arent :3 yeah technically they won't necessarily know if you do but it's kinda just the polite thing to do to respect them and their wishes

personally ive had people get inspired by / " steal " my art style before and every time its made me extremely happy because that means that my art had enough of an impact to inspire people and thats objectively a good thing ithink

I want to post some of my traced work online (with credit, of course) to help other newer artists feel more comfortable with studying art. I wasn't super comfortable or well informed on how to study art until I saw others doing it and was told that this is how tracing can be ok, and it's helped my art a TON as a result. I want to pass it forward, and help other artists stuck in the position I was, uncomfortable in their style and confused on how to improve.

One thing I should share that I've read in my reading for my art history class is imitation and emulation has been a way for artists to learn since the Renassaince. Artists learn to paint/draw/sculpt by copying other artists and then start creating their own stuff with the techniques they learned, maybe even adding their own thing in order to innovate with the art. Even da Vinci himself has done some sketches of different statues in order to get good at his craft.

i deadass had a conversation with a dude (AI bro, not an artist) who argued that AI art is ethical because 'artists steal artstyles constantly anyway' and that making fanarts is stealing characters and designs

If art style theft is wrong then rip anime. I also don't see a problem with heavy referencing. Everyone does it, and I mean literally everyone. Even if you build a memory of things and "draw from imagination" you are still pulling on the memory of the originals. It's just no one admits to it because they don't want to be stigmatised for it.

my thoughts on artstyle theft are very strong because of an experience i had. so about a few years ago i came up with my artstyle and it took reference from so many different things (paswg, anime, realism, scene art, semi-realism, and chibi) to make something completely unique that i hadnt seen anywhere before to kinda make that my signature thing. the proportions i did were from paswg because i loved how they were, the colors i did were from scene art, the faces and body were from anime, the eyes were semi-realism, and i drew my characters in gyaru or scene fashion all the time. i also did a unique thing with my noses too, so people would see that specific style and trace it back to me. i didnt take heavy references of of anything, just took some aspects i liked, like i said above to make a unique look to all my art that was recognizeable. after i started posting a bit, i started gaining a small following of people that loved my art and confirmed my belief that it was unique. then one of my followers had a pfp in my exact style that i handmade over YEARS of work. it looked exactly like something i would make, too. so people started asking if they were an alt of mine and they just said no to those things. and they continued posting art in my exact signature style until their following grew to be bigger than mine, then i was the one accused of theft even though they copied every single little detail i added to my pieces to make it unique and distinguishable. every little one. if you put my work and theirs side by side you would think it was made by the same person. they copied the EXACT way i draw eyes, down to the specific way i drew the eyebrows, eye shape, waterline, and lashes. and they also took the exact way that i put my signature onto pieces, just their handle instead of mine. they also took heavy inspiration off of my ocs to make theirs, again, in my style, so that i looked like the one copying them. their most popular oc was a blatant ripoff of my persona, and you could tell because my persona could turn into a goldfish and i draw goldfish in a soecific way and they did too, (and also added the small thing i did to where they can half transform into a mermaid, but their hands are fins, just like mine and drew the fins the same way i did to resemble hands a bit) they basically took note of every little thing i did in my work and put it in theirs and it was just so frustrating bc i would make tiny changes and they would do the same thing. i had to quit because of it all and im really mad because i took so much pride in having a unique artstyle too. im starting my insta back up under a new name soon, so hopefully that doesnt happen again but everytime i hear about how "artstyle theft isnt a real thing" it makes my blood boil.

While this hasn't happened to me (thankfully) I am also a firm believer of artstyle theft for exactly this reason. One popular counterargument is the whole 'imitiation is the highest form of flattery' I've grown so sick of that saying because people who replicate artstyles to such a heavy degree like in your case just want to hightail off of your success or they're very young and don't yet understand that finding a personal style is something that comes naturally and neglect their base skills in favor of artstyle. I'm not saying that young artists aren't allowed to take heavy inspiration ever, because you can learn a lot by studying someone else, but it becomes a problem when all you can really be is a copycat. There's not fun in art if your art can't shine on it's own without being in the shadow of another creator who worked their ass off getting their art to look the way they want to. Besides, there's so much you can learn in trying new things and letting things develop organically, I learned so much about coloring and lighting when I stopped doing the whole hyper-pastel stuff that was popular a few years back because I never tried something new, slowing my improvement to a snails pace. I think that also applies to people who replicate artstyles a lot. You wont learn if all you do is trying to be like others

while i sympathize with your situation i feel like it has problems outside of "art style theft" and this person you described did other things that fall under a different label. making an identical oc to that of yours isnt replicating an art style, it's design theft, which is a completely different standalone issue. if they were taking little details and incorporating it into their own work, that feels like they were heavily referencing specific pieces rather than the style itself which falls under heavy referencing. people comparing two artists with similar styles are also at fault here, this has happened in the community before where people get accused of tracing other artists simply because someone said "your art looks like x" and now both artists are under fire for tracing each other when both of them wanted to be independent creators. when it comes to a style itself it's hard to accuse someone of STEALING it when there's no way to prove that and there is a possibility that you could've had similar ideas. the fashion you draw your characters in and the colors you use etc. are not things that exclusively you do--there are MILLIONS OF ARTISTS in the world. at least ONE of them if not more are bound to do things in a similar way to you (if not something that feels exactly the same). again, like i said, ive seen artists on the internet who have extremely similar styles to mine, and while it stings a bit i don't accuse them of anything or assume they got these ideas from me because that just has a possibility of happening. i've been an artist for years and years and years, i took a long time shaping my style to what it is as well, and when i see that i do feel a pang of "they just took my years of work" but what should be understood is that there's a chance they come from years of experience too and just landed in a very similar spot. with the part that they copied your OCs and mimicked your signature, this again feels like design theft and borderline identity theft. which are different issues. i definitely understand where you're coming from and im sorry to hear that this happened to you, and that situation wasn't at all your fault, though

If you consider art style theft to be real, wouldn’t that mean you technically stole an art style? You said your characters' proportions were inspired by PaSWG, which would technically be art theft. I'm not trying to hate or anything! I'm just trying to let you know that technically, your art style was influenced by something else, so that person probably couldn't have stolen your art style if you already copied something from a source. The person does sound like they are copying your online identity and designs on purpose, but art style? Even I steal some tiny things from other people's art styles and apply them to my art to see if they work. Again, I'm not hating or downplaying you. You didn't deserve to have this happen to you.

I refuse to get mad at people tracing my art, because even if I'm not getting credit, they liked my art enough to want to take my art, same goes with my art style, i love when people draw the i do, my art is unique and sometimes seeing people use the thing i made and worked on feels nice because my art is getting recognition and people like it. I don't care if people use my art to make art of their own, because they want to learn off of me and most likely admire me. I don't care if i get credited or not for someone using a similar design to my fandom ocs or using the same colours or shape. its dumb how people get mad at stuff like this, especially at children who don't know better. i understand tracing can be annoying without credit but the best you can do is educate them why tracing and stealing is bad, rather then attacking these people.

i don't think art style theft is really a thing, but there comes a point where someone's art gets mistaken by the person who they're taking very, very heavy inspo from's friends as said person's art because of how they use colors and effects and etc as the person who they're refeencing and at that point it might as well be plagiarism, especially if there's no credit for it
@NenePlayss

For me, art theft can be stupid. Like if you have a beginner, first-time-digital-artist esq artstyle or a very common art style. You don't own shapes or colors, and you arent being traced, so how is this even a thing????????? A good example of REAL art style theft is if you have a never seen before very original artstyle, that takes inspo from nothing. Your very own artstyle. Someone then blatantly copies the original artstyle. A bad example is if you take heavy inspo from popular shows or creators, and someone else uses the same inspiration, and you accuse them of artstyle theft,,,,

Ik itz super petty and kinda pathetic but usually i put up a disclaimer on my personal pagez asking people not to heavily reference my style becuz of that lol. i think itz mainly becuz it took me years to develop something that im personally happy with and have so much emotion in so thatz why im so attached lol. @cutiemachine
@cutiemachine 11 ай бұрын
@@mostlyghostly07 I understand your opinion and I respect it but I can't say I agree. Yes, styles are formed through **inspiration** from others, but it's not inspiration when you're copying all the features that differentiate an art style from the rest. OP is referring to that and so was I with my reply. Of course you can have the same general art style as someone else but when you start using all the features they use in their drawings to set them apart from other artists (edit: on purpose) it's obviously gonna piss them off. This is a situation that's hard to understand unless you experience it yourself.
