The Heavy Vehicle Unit (HVU) sits within the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section (RPDAS). HVU members have specialised knowledge in unique legislation, vehicle standards, driver fatigue and load restraints for all heavy vehicles on Victorian roads. And by heavy vehicle, that's anything over 4.5 tonne - including trucks such as removalist vans, flatbeds, tow trucks, B-doubles, and road trains, and also includes buses that seat over 12 people.
HVU also has a team of detectives that investigate the chain of responsibility of road accidents where the heavy vehicle is at fault, and this can include investigating vehicle companies and their compliance with legislation.
