First lesson! Don't worry, the alphabet will come later, and that's for a good reason! Remember that when you were a child your parents didn't teach you the alphabet first! You learned some words and phrases before you learned the alphabet. Also, we don't include subtitles in our videos because your parents didn't give you subtitles when you learned your language. The best way to learn a language is to experience it like you did as a child. Remember to have fun and enjoy it! Watch this as many times as you need to before going to the next lesson. When you watch it the second time, we recommend repeating the words aloud. If you want to learn more about our method of teaching, and why it's the scientifically-proven most effective method for language acquisition, you can check out: freehebrew.online/why-our-method

People are saying great things about this course but I am sure not many know how amazing this actually is. I need to explain why so some people realize how difficult it is to find anything like this. This is not Israeli Hebrew. This is Biblical Hebrew. Some words are very different between Biblical and Israeli Hebrew. The verbal system is different although the root words are mostly the same. However, what amazes me personally is her ability to pronounce the Hebrew letters a lot closer to the way they were pronounced in ancient times. In modern Hebrew, the R is pronounced like in Yiddish which is a Germanic language. The original sound of the letter R was very close to that of Arabic. The sound of the letter Ayin is silent in modern Hebrew with only a few exceptions when it is pronounced as a quick stop. In Biblical Hebrew it should be pronounced exactly the way the teacher is pronouncing it in the word for goat. The ayin does not exist in Spanish or English but it does exist in Arabic which is a sister language of Hebrew. The letter Het is also very unique and the teacher pronounces it very well, yet n modern Hebrew it is pronounce like the letter Khaf. You all may not know enough yet to appreciate how amazing her pronunciation is but please trust me: I have not found many teachers who teach these sounds closer to what they were in ancient times. These lessons are invaluable. If you all can, please donate to them, support them, you will want to see them thrive!

Joseph Halevy I agree with what you've said, but I'm wondering why the decision was made to stop there and not implement the other things we know about Classical Hebrew pronunciation. For example, the six non-emphatic stops b, d, g, p t, k were all spirantized post-vocalically (unless they were geminated). So, for example, the word for "this" (fem.) which appears in this lesson wasn't pronounced "zot" but something like "zoth," more or less to rhyme with English "both." (In Ashkenazik pronunciation, the spirantized t becomes s, hence "zos.") Also, tet ט and tav ת were pronounced differently, corresponding to Arabic ط and ت

@@cufflink44 Spot on! Zoth should rhyme with cloth. Tet should be an emphatic T a bit more explosive than the initial T is Spanish or Italian. Tav should be pronounced like a true T in English when dotted and as a th when not dotted. In my research, I was surprised to find out that Samekh which should sound like a true S was paired with Tzadi which should sound like an emphatic S in Arabic. Shin was pronounced very similar to Sh in English and Sin was probably a softer whistling Sh like some Texans pronounce their final S. The vowel system in ancient Hebrew indicates that there were more than five distinct vowels which are attested in Amharic and Arabic. Yet, this course is the closest to ancient Hebrew phonetics that I have found online. Thanks for your comment! I did not get a notification so I saw it eight months later by chance.
@josephhalevy6782

@@michaelpardo8403 sweet comment! Languages evolve slowly and naturally and we can observe that in the language (languages) of the Scriptures. There are several modalities of Hebrew in the scriptures. We know for sure that changes in the writings obeyed to phonetic changes that occurred over time. The th sound is found in classical Arabic and a few Arabic speaking groups but it is no longer used wholesale by the entire Arabic speaking world. Like Hebrew, the th sound in Arabic seems to be a later development, so I understand exactly where you’re coming from. The tonal accent system was also very different from modern Hebrew and the Ashkenazi pronunciation has kept remnants of Ancient Hebrew syllabic emphasis. Yet, we must remember that languages change over time and we must keep in mind that the scriptures were writings that were collected from different sources and different times, sometimes spanning hundreds of years. So we can see differences between one book of the scriptures and the next or even within the same book or chapter. I am obviously not a linguist but I was taught as a little child about the sounds and history of the Hebrew language by my mother, who was a Mizrahit herself.

@@AlephwithBeth yes! Yes! And yes! I love your explanation as to why ancient Hebrew is pronounced the way you do in these videos and it is spot on! My mother came from a home of very studious people and she gave me a good insight into her traditional understanding as to the pronunciation of the Hebrew in the different places of the Scriptures. We noticed important differences in the grammar and writings from one area to the next. My mom’s theory was that some texts were older or younger than others and at times the older texts had been copied into later texts thereby producing an even more ancient feel within a text like the “song of Moshe”, which sounds like a more ancient Hebrew than the surrounding text. Thanks for all the work and love you’ve obviously put into this project.

Chananiah Mordecai Shalom uVrakhah! I’m sorry to cause confusion. They are definitely evangelical Christians. I am a Jew. Over the years I have come to the realization that Jews, Christians and Muslims are brothers and sister in a large dysfunctional family of long lost multicultural relatives. Each group thinks they know the other two but the vast majority of what we believe about each other is not accurate. I found out years ago because I studied Judaism, Christianity and Islam from their own perspective and then dig into each groups opinions and “knowledge” about each other. To boost my chances at a fair understanding of the issues, I also delved into their perception of their own people and the divisions they have experience and boy did I find misunderstandings! Since then I just treat everyone with the same kindness a loving father would treat their autistic child. We are all right and we are all wrong. I prefer to support specific projects. Some are Jewish and some are Muslims. I never give money to muslims but I dedicated many hours of my work and my money to bring food to the table of refugee Muslims in Sweden as I also helped them understand the western culture and adapt to it. I have supported projects of the Chabad Lubavitch, Even though I don’t see eye to eye with some of their views and I do the same with The Red Cross and some Catholic and Evangelicals. Right now I don’t have a steady income for now but I’m sure I will continue to support projects that seem good in any group. Religious or not. The same way I defund projects that seem to cause unjust anguish or even potential harm to anyone else. It’s my personal way of doing my part in repairing the universe. 😘

I found this last weekend. I studied Hebrew & Greek about 30 years ago. I didn't do well in either one, though better with the Greek. I figured I would never get back and improve my Hebrew, untill I found your channel. I'm surprised at how easy it is for me to learn with these lessons. I just wish the pdfs didn't use the smaller, lighter shaded fonts. My eyes aren't as young as they used to be. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the encouragement! Glad you're enjoying them. We actually start introducing the writing of words later on in other lessons. It's usually best in this methodology of teaching to wait before introducing too many elements into the equation. What we are thinking of doing in the future is having a PDF guide for those people who want some of it written out that you can download for free. You can pray for us as we prepare that, since it's a lot of work!

Gracias por tus clase, y tu simpatía que son del Abba, para que haga su tarea, y toda exaltación sea para el, pues vivimos, nos movemos , trabajamos, hay hijos pero por el, gracias, espero no serle infiel, pero no lo conocemos, pues ni sabemos hablar como el habla en su lenguaje, con el cual hice todo, gracias. Desde aqui Colombia el sur del mundo.

You both are amazing! I wouldn't have been able to learn Heabrew without you. Is Greek ever a plan for you too? There is nothing put there that is this good. We must learn as if children. It is excellent!
