When I went to Ephesus, I was looking around and found this faded carving of Hecate in a wall, and it felt so special to me. I said my first proper prayer to her there, and soon after a black dog showed up near it. He was pretty big but well behaved and sweet. It was a special day for me to really see her presence

I had two big black dogs(cane corso/bull mastiff mix and a German shepherd/rottweiler mix for anyone curious). My shephard/rotty recently passed away due to a stomach flip, which oddly enough is the reason my mastiff passed away. When my mastiff passed away, about two weeks before his passing i got this caring female voice in my head say that "he will pass in two weeks, be prepared" and sure enough in two weeks, he did. In my beliefs, they are with Hekate.

So little is known about her, she's one of the goddesses I regularly worship. I'm glad you really dug into the past and gave all the info, as most don't and just stick to the more Roman/Medieval stuff. Her origins are super important, as they tell us that even Zeus wouldn't cross her and would follow her wishes. Zeus!!! He respected her above any other goddess and arguably is the only one he saw as a equal. She has dominion over land, sea and sky, something even Zeus doesn't have. Even though Zeus agreed to the rape of Persephone, he agreed with Hecate that she shouldn't have to stay there forever, even tho this was convention at the time. She's truly one of the more fascinating goddesses of the ancient world.

My favorite aspect of Hecate has always been her association with crossroads, borders, doors, gates, etc. and liminality. I just love her chthonic nature and how she is both representation and holder of the key to other realms. She is neither here not there but powerful both in each place but in between them as well.

Awesome video… some years ago I began a journey of spirituality and self discovery… as I self studied, I felt drawn to Hecate and she became my patron Goddess. Long story short, after some I performed a self initiation, during my meditation, I asked for my craft name, within about 15-20mins I had an overwhelming sense of a presence within my room. Shortly after I felt a touch on my shoulder and my name popped into mind. It was an experience I have not forgotten… Throughout this journey, I have learned/experienced many things, I now understand that I am a spiritual being. I no longer follow the dogma of my religious upbringing, I have evolved from my learning/practicing of the craft and have embraced a unity with all things. This journey through life we will continue to learn and grow until the day spirit returns to the greater collective. But, Hecate remains apart of me, I still speak her at cross road and other Hecate aspects. After all she is one of the oldest and most powerful of Goddesses, she predates Greek mythology… Blessed Be

After i left Islam, i began to see "signs" of hecate everywhere. Triples, black dogs and cats, the moon shined clearer than ever before. One night i decided to call out to Hecate, asking for guidance. As i was falling to sleep, i heard a woman's whispers swirling around in my head. It sounded like she was walking around my house muttering some kind of enchantment. I felt protected by it. I am not the type of person to get down on my knees and "worship" anyone or anything, with my experince with Islam i know how dangerous that can be. Great video. One aspect worth exploring that is not really covered is the Egyptian connection with the name. 'Heka' is both a god and the word for 'magic' in Ancient Egypt and 'et' is a feminising suffix. It is possible that the Carian goddess had another name but that an Egyptian one stuck. The Egyptian god Heka is depicted holding two crossed snakes and the 'snake goddess' of the Minoans, who seems to have much in common with Hekate is also often shown holding two snakes. The snakes are also sometimes more resembling an umbilical cord that twists around the goddess image which might hint at connections with childbirth.
@JustKrista50
@JustKrista50 Ай бұрын
It was actually Qus not Egypt that had Heka. Important, because it makes sense that Hekate became the goddess of the ancient Greek witches. The constant city state wars would have women and children fleeing. Qus is located closely to the city in Greece where the ancient temple to Hekate was. The "te" ending in Greek made it feminine.

She could be summed up, to me, as the goddess of change, cycles, and transition... dooways= Outside to Inside. Liminal= Light TO Shaow, or dark TO light, or living TO Dead. Persephone= Maiden TO Mature TO Crone back TO Maiden, which is why she she is the escort or companion to Persephone. Same with her familiars, the nurse TO the pole cat and the regal queen TO the wretched vengeful b!tch. Same with menstrual blood. The keys are change from outside to inside, and torches being in the dark to being in the light... Am I the only one that felt this way?

Helios and Hecate are the higher divine aspects of being human. "Them watching Persephone's capture" is the divine feminine and divine masculine observing the descent of concious spiritual essence( fem principle) be in-cubed or incubated into physical reality. Most ancient stories telling of descension speak from a viewpoint higher than human normalities so they are relayed through constructs the human perception can recognize( re-learn).

Thank you, most sincerely, for your marvelous essay on Hecate. As the first deity ever to make a conscious and named impression on my life, Hecate has been dear to my heart throughout most of my days and nights on Earth, and I never tire of hearing more lore, more stories, theories and memories about the roles she has played in other lives and civilizations. Were I asked, I would say that, from my own experience at least, she is currently the most active and palpably present of all the ancient Greek gods in the world of today. One sees her and feels her presence everywhere, and I am always grateful to other humans who acknowledge her and thank her and give her some of the respect she is due. So thank you, once again! I may have thought that I knew everything there was to know about Our Lady Of The Crossroads, but you have taught me even more, and I will recommend this delightful video to everybody I know. All the best to you. Blessed be to all of your scholarly endeavors, and may Hecate's blessing light your way always. --N

I’m a recent practitioner of witchcraft and have an altar for Hecate in my home. I additionally have a triple goddess tattoo on my wrist. It was wonderful to learn Hecate’s origins prior to her being known as Mother Maiden and Crone Thank you sharing! Very fascinating!

I always love learning about new things and this essay about Hekate/Hecate is just amazing, I used to do research when I was younger in the gods and goddesses but I have to say I never learned that she had any connection to dogs or hounds of any sort, that is amazing. I wonder if she and Bastet ever traded teaching techniques? or woes about their animals over drinks? I mean just because one is for cats and one is for dogs does not mean they can't share their love and support each other

I think it’s cause you’re just trying to work with them. You’re not allowed to just use them, they dislike that and think it’s disrespectful. You first have to bond with them, set ur intentions with them, it’s something that is gradual over time. I tried reaching out to Hecate, eros, even my spirit team, I didnt get anything but I’m still trying because I know it’s out there.

[Citation Needed] on any of the Moirae being an Old Woman. Greek gods were noted for their agelessness (the Graeae are notable in their senectude) even Hera (who does do the three stages thing) remains young in the third stage: Widow (the other two being girl-child & wife) The closest I've been able to find is them (the Moirae) being equated with the Graeae (but then theyre all old) or Atropos, the leader, being described as shorter in The Shield of Herakles Also huge [Citation Needed] for the "Shes the only Titan left working post Titanomachy" Argonautica mentions Selene (not Artemis) watching Medea's escape; Helios (not Apollo) also is doing his sun role (see Medea's sun chariot); or Rhea-Kybele...

I have a plaque from egypt found in the 1920's in a tomb alongside Old Kingdom artefacts (dated 2200-2400BCE) . This is clearly Hecate, three heads with on body, inverted crescent moon as a headdress, lit torches in two hands, knives in two hands and a vase and a spherical object in the others. The style is cleary ancient egyptian not thracian, greek or roman and one head has the traditional cap seen on old kingdom heads! She has a lion to her right (Pakhet?) and a dog (Wepwawet?) to her left both associated with the book of the dead and on both sides is being threatened by depictions of Appophis the egyptian god of destruction. I wish I could attach a photo this is a very impressive item. This is art work before the roman period clearly showing her as a moon realted goddess. No other example is recorded on checking with all the major museums. I think that Hecate (probably under a different name perhaps a adaptation of Heket the frog god) seems to be a much older goddess than realised!

It's wonderful to hear someone explain the history of Hecate. I found the dog sacrifice evidence very interesting. First I have ever heard of archeological evidence, but I had read of dogs being sacrifieced to Hecate somewhere. I am not surprised that historians and historical fiction writers have mansplained the Godesses into simplified and homoginized forms. I love the I Claudius Books, but I dont believe Graves had much interest in female deities beyond dramatic writing. But I haven't read "The White Goddess", so I couldn't say for sure. Anways, I loved this video! Thank you for making it.

You should look up Basque witchcraft and the Akelarre of Zugarramurdi (Sacred ritual Cave) for the real thing. This belief system is likely 10s of thousands of years old. And is deeply rooted in our history.

I hate to be that person, but this doesn't date back tens of thousand of years. Civilisation as we know it is only about 6,000 years old, and the earliest evidence we have of any form of witchcraft is around 931 BCE, which was only just under 3,000 years ago. And then Basque witchcraft only dates back to the early 1500s, which is only 500 years ago

Great video. Dear watchers and students, it should be known that the various associations and specifics are often due to the individuals (sorcerers/practitioners) were assisted in a specific way, and so then the stories commenced, “well this deity/god is good for such and such” because the individual in a successful relationship with divine beings, fulfills a purpose and so hence is assisted by spiritual Beings. The variations are often due to the individual soul journey nearly assisted. The claims reflect personal powers rather than the actual power of the deity and of course the common aspects are the deities 🙏🏼

This is a very comprehensive, well researched and presented video. Well done and thank you. Hecate is derived from an ancient Egyptian word Heka that means magic, enchanter and much more. The ideas you are expressing about Hecate is far more complex and is part of ancient cosmology that was lived out in real tradition (various cultural expressions including religion, rituals, etc). In my free online chapter 9, extracted from my book Akashic Records and Holy Grails, you will understand the broader meaning of the ancient cosmology and how Heka(T) fits into these ancient ideas, for example, why she was a triple goddess, like the three later three Marys, the meaning of linking her to dogs, her association with gates, roads and other ideas.
