Heidenau K60 Scout Tires Review
www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/he...
The Heidenau K60 Scout is taking the adventure touring market by storm. Only available in the US since 2007, the K60 Scout is the new improved version of the K60. The unique chevron pattern of the tire tread strikes an excellent balance between long wear and excellent road grip. Using the resilient rubber compound perfected by Heidenau, the rear tire has a tread pattern for each tire size, allowing for uniform performance from light bikes to heavier, more torque bikes. This tire is considered to be a 50/50 on road / off road tire and comes in a variety of sizes for your adventure bike.

I live and ride around BC, Canada (mostly paved) and have just rolled past 21000 km and there's still life in my Heidenau's although the rear is quite squared off.... Awesome tires and even though I ride mostly on pavement, I'll get them again as they feel great on pavement as well including rain conditions.

I added these tires for a trip out to Colorado from Ohio, to explore some of the Colorado back country. The fact that these are 50/50 tires, gave me the confidence to tackle some serious trails, which combined dirt, sand, gravel, rock and what seemed like boulders! Love the tires and with over 6,000 miles on them, many of them road miles, I just am not seeing tire wear. Well, I am sure there is, but if I get less than 10,000 miles on these tires, I'll be surprised.

I have been looking for the best on/off road tire for my R1200GS. It was't until RevZilla provided this review thatI was able to decide to purchase the K60 Scout as soon as my current TKC80 tires are ready to be replaced. I will be purchasing my Scouts from RevZilla. I appreciate all of your video reviews. it really makes online buying experience almost as good as being in the store. Great job guys!!

Thanks for the feedback. If you are spending a lot of time off paved roads, this is a great choice. I'm not as crazy about the K76 tires I have on my 1200GS, but I got to ride on the K60 on a rental bike with RawHyde Adventures. They did great in the mud. ~Ali

K60 has become my tire of choice for my R1200GSA. It is durable on pavement and makes me feel comfortable off road. Did a coast to coast to coast from Key West, FL to Prudhoe Bay, AK and back with one front tire. The rear I changed in Fairbanks after coming back from Deadhorse yet it still head thread left.

The K60 tire, is the go to ADV tire for me now! I ride a K5DL1000, and have put about 1500-2000 on-road/dirt miles on the tires since they were mounted. There is minimal wear on the rear, and absolutely no wear on the front. I actually had the bike on a pretty rocky BLM road last weekend, and the tires handled the rocky terrain without issue! I push the bike on the tarmac as well, and the tires fit that bill quite nicely! Ripping down a forest road is far easier than it used to be with the Metzeler Tourances these tires replaced. While the Metz tires handled on road duty VERY WELL, they are not near as good in the dirt as the Hiedenau K60! Great tire, and I hope they don't change it!!

Got these tires last spring (from Revzilla, of course) and spent the summer on them. Great tires and no issues with the knobbies on the pavement. Little different feel on the pavement and a little louder, but nothing I couldn't handle on the GS1200 Adv. Great tires.

The K60 are a great choice for the Tenere. I think that your bike is one of the few ADV/touring bikes that can really hold its own off-road. That is exactly the intent of these tires and will rock most terrains save for deep mud or sand where true knobbies are needed. -CK

These have become my favorite tires for my 1150GS. I commute 150miles to work a day and when I go offroad I really like to push the bike as much as I can. I've had the Tourance before which were great for onroad, but when it came to offroading I absolutely hated the tires. The k60 scout is perfect for offroading

Got my K60s for my KTM 990 from Revzilla about a month and a half ago. I finally got a chance to ride last week. Did about 120 miles of mountain pavement and twisties and about 25 miles of mixed condition dirt fire road/trail. I'm really impressed with the tarmac performance... very grippy and relatively quiet. Need more time off-road, but initial impressions are good: the rear felt solid and overall traction was good. Front felt accurate and handled loose pack well.

The Heidenau K60 Scout are a long wearing tire. While the center ridge on some of their larger tires won't move dirt as well as the TKC 80's, they will definitely give you many miles of performance. ~Ali

I put about 15K on my K76 tires. Compared to my previous Kenda's these Heidenaus were pretty awesome. I think they do a fantastic job as an 80/20 or 90/10 tire. I still have about 1K left but I've been hitting more logging roads than usual this year and after watching this video a few times, I decided to try some K60's on my Triumph Scrambler. Thanks guys for the great reviews! Will post again in 2 years for the follow up :P

I think it all depends on the roads you plan on taking. The Vstrom 650 is a perfectly capable bike for off-road, but will not go very far without an aggressive, more knobby tread. If you are only trying to tackle hard pack dirt, or gravel roads, the K76 should stomach these without a problem. -CK

I've used the K60 on a Triumph Scrambler and now on my Tiger800XC and they are a great tyre. The 150 size rear has a solid central band which helps it resist squaring off and they'll do over 6000 miles so long as you don't "rip it" with the throttle. Not as good as a TKC80 in British mud but the extra longevity is worth that trade off. Overall the bike handles great with the K60s and they won't slow you down at all on dry tarmac but, although good, obviously, don't take liberties in the wet.

@RevZilla 11 жыл бұрын
The K60 scout are as close to a knobby tire as you can get while still maintaining enough center tread to reduce vibration on the street. The TKC80 doesn't balance as well on the fence in that regard. -CK

These are Grrrreat tyres. I rode these tyres down on a DRZ to Cape Town from London UK which is in excess of 20,000km. I changed my rear in Nairobi out of fear it would not last the whole way had tonnes of thread left. My companions were on a Teneré and a Transalp used the same tyres, the Tenere ate through the tyre quickly and was bald by Kenya... same with the replacement, the Transalp rode the entire distance from London to Cape Town on 1 rear tyre and still had plenty of thread left. :)

So my experience is: WIth Metzler Tourance (non-EXP) I got 6k miles on the rear and 9k on the front. The Heidenau K60 gave me 8k on the rear, and 13.5k on the front, or +33% and +50%, respectively. But the noisiness (which comes from the front tire mostly) gets on my nerves. So I would put it on the rear only, or try the new TKC-70 from Conti.

Fantastic tyre for adventure riding, have had them on a KLR, DR650 and 660 tenere. Can't fault them...............except trying to get the buggers off and on the rim whilst on the trail!!! Just wrecked a rear tyre trying to get it back on the rim. There appears to be technique in fitting them, to which I obviously didn't adhere to :-) Even so I will be buying a new one, best all round tyre I've had!

I should point out, I had the budget for most equipment but settled for comfortable and practical. Riding in Saharan climates in armoured clothing is more of a peril than a virtue, which I wont back down from. Doing the trip again, I'd exchange the boots for a pair of military boots which have more ventilation. The other guys on the trip had a lot of protective clothing which they soon discovered to be superfluous to the riding conditions, comfortable slacks, t-shirt and good sun-screen!

I put a set of these on my (new to me) old '95 DR650. I could not have made a better choice. Being a street rider for many years hauling the mail as they say, no stranger to leaning her over until something scrapes. Well, to my surprise as I get used to 200lbs fewer on a bike (woohoo!) all the sudden I swear that I dragged a peg on an old beat up DR650. These tires make me feel like a hero on the same sections that I'm used to on my Bandit (super twisty stuff mind you, 1st/2nd/3rd gear DR corners). So I'll save the high speed 100+mph sweepers for the Bandit, and have a blast in the tight technical stuff with my DR650 with these Heidenau Scouts. Great tires both on and off road. Awesome feedback and when they step out, super easy to recover. Great feel.

I have these tires on my 2012 Super Tenere' 1200. They are really good on hard pack gravel roads and are the longest lasting dual sport tires on the market! 7500 miles on them so far and about half worn on the rear. the front shows almost no wear. When deciding on K60 Scouts, keep in mind that not all of the K60's are the new generation K60 Scouts. I have a set for my CRF250L (120/80-18, 90/90-21) and although the Scout is available for the front tire, I chose the older style K60 to match the rear as it is only available in the older K60. They are very similar in appearance, but they do have some differences, presumably improvements.

There is definitely better tire if you want to go harder, both on and off road, but for the majority of us, I think you can not go wrong with these tires. Just sat on my third set! Hah! Great, you'll love us for this... I used an old tattered Frank Thomas cafe racer jacket, with a removable waterproof layer.... 2 pairs of BDU cargo pants (by Helikon) with a pair of waterproof over trousers for the wet. Diadorra Stone 3 boots (still going good 3 years later). and a pair of IXS gloves... which were stolen half way... I rode the rest using gardening gloves to keep the sun off my hands as the anti-malaria tablets made us sensitive to sun light.

I put one of the new tread style K60 on the rear of 1290 KTM. Wears like iron. 7,000 miles on it so far. It's showing wear but not done yet. The center rib design gives miles but compromises traction in dirt. Also hydroplanes if you go fast in hard rain. Of course the 1290's torque would reveal silly stuff like wheelspin at 70. Confidence inspiring otherwise. No weirdness or problems on pavement other than the deep water afore mentioned. Throw it into a corner like you just don't care! I'll do this tire again.

Great review RevZilla! I'm thinking about putting these Heidenau K60 in my BMW f650 st. The original front tire has an odd dimension (100/90/18). Heidenau does not have that size, so can I fit a rear 4.00X18 in the front wheel?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 9 жыл бұрын
Filipe Osorio Unfortunately no, we do not recommend putting a rear on the front. In this case, that rear 4.00x18 is too wide and too stiff to be used on the front. We can only recommend staying with sport touring tires in the correct front size. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle-tires#v2-facets%5B%5D=1088&page=1&page_size=96&sort=featured&tab=all

I know this is an old video but currently I run a150/60 17 rear and 120/70 17 on Drz400sm. what size (if any) would be available close to that profile in this tire?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
The closest sizes would be a 120/90-17 front and 150/70-17 rear. That's almost a whole inch taller in front and 0.6 inch taller in the rear. That's a big change from what you're running. Instead, consider the Shinko 705s in 120/70R17 front and 150/70R17 rear for 80/20 on/off-road. The "R" denotes a radial tire, and it's crucial to have a radial rear if running a radial front. The Continental TKC80s are really aggressive at 40/60 on/off-road and are available in those sizes but are listed as bias-ply (as denoted by a B in 120/70B17). For 90/10 on/off-road, the Avon AV54 Trailriders come in your exact 120/70 and 150/60 sizes. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shinko-705-dual-sport-tires *www.revzilla.com/product/continental-twinduro-tkc80-dual-sport-tires *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/avon-av54-trailrider-tires

Hey guys, based on most of the reviews i have come across this seems to be just the kind of tire im looking for for my motard. Im curious though would a 170/60/17 wide fit a 2002 KTM 640 SM, Factory tire is a 160/60/17. If i put a 150/70/17 what would be the effect on performance? Thanks
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
The 170 is likely too wide for that rim, but you could run the 150/70, since it has about the same height as the 160/60 when both are mounted on the same size rim. The difference in performance is bigger between these tires and your current tires compared to the difference in performance between two sizes of these K60 tires. For stock sizes, you may want to consider the Pirelli MT60R Tires though. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/pirelli-mt60r-tires

Bought a slightly used (1400 miles) 2017 super adventure r that the previous owner had equipped with these tires. After several thousand miles both on and off road and a few close calls I was starting to question my riding ability. Maybe it was me, maybe it was the new bike that I wasn't used to. I'm a fairly experienced rider and racer participating in Motocross, Offroad, desert racing, isde's and Supermoto on a expert level. I was perplexed and decided to go back to the Scorpion AT tires that my 950 KTM came with stock. The transformation was undeniable, I was right back where I was at when I was 35 years old riding my 950, a happy place. The K 60s wear like iron but that's not how I ride or what I'm looking for. If you're not looking to tip it into the corners and have some fun and just ride straight flatlines forever than they are the tire for you. They just didn't work for my riding Style.

airplane247 That depends on so many variables that it's hard to put a number on it. What kind of bike are you riding? Will it be fully loaded? How much riding will be in the dirt? How much on the street? The K60 is largely considered one of the better 50 / 50 tires for street riding. Compared to the TKC80 you'll definitely get more mileage. However, just how much depends on how strong your throttle wrist is and a bunch of other stuff. -Kraus-e

Check out the Avon Distanzias but don't expect a lot of life. There really isn't a great solution.

we use these tires all the time...right now I have 23,000 KM on my third set. WE keep the PSI up and take it from there. Been up the Dempster and all of the Alaskan roads in 2011 on Triumph Tiger 800XC bikes and ride everyday to work on our Beemers. Off road or on pavement these are the best for us. Long lasting, reliable and you get a lot of bang for your buck. This is our impression and experience. advgrrls.com

Still the best ADV tires around. There are some good ones but Heidenau still reigns ha. 🏔🏜
