Hi All, This is a very special episode! Today we review our 1958 Porsche 356 T2 A Normal Cabriolet: Miss Eva! This car is featured in many of our episodes so we want to give you an in-depth, comprehensive Owner’s Perspective on this car. This car has been in the family since 1961 and we have had stewardship for the last seven years. The 356 is an incredible fun and useful car that has real presence on the road and is an absolute joy to drive. We run you through the interior, take you for a drive and go through some of the neat technical bits on the car.
We really hope you enjoy this video. Please don’t forget to give it a thumb’s up and leave any questions or comments below.
Also, Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

Couldn't help but chuckle at the Le Mans start. In my head all I could hear was the opening sequence to Speed Racer. Thank you for keeping the tube radio in the car. It is so nice to see original equipment radios like that still in use. I love these cars, and would kill to have a coupe. Thank you for sharing such a special vehicle.

I'm german, and it makes me happy to see how much you appreciate and enjoy german engineered cars from the good old times. And I'm deeply impressed because of your knowledge and DIY skills. It's a real pleasure for me to watch your great videos. And I like the patina of the 365. Your car collection is so nice and well selected. - Greetings from Germany. 👍👍👍

When I first saw this car, I thought you just put down a huge chunk of cash and this was the way you got it, ready to go. After seeing your 4 part series on how you got it; wow what a long journey you went through to get it. I hope it lasts your entire lives in your hands. You really deserve it. I had a 61 Normal coupe in 1969 but blew the motor. Sold it to a friend who rolled it over not long after. At the time, the $350 I got for the car seemed like a good deal. Oh well, sure wish I still had it! The last one I had was a 77 911S Targa. Gone now, paid for my daughter's wedding.

Aw. My dad had a used 1962 356 Super 90 Coupe that he sold to put the down payment on the house they first bought shortly after I was born. Rumor has it they put me on the back car shelf in a box for about a year when they drove the car. Anyhow, that car was sold and the next owner blew the engine. Just reminded me of it. You will get another special car if you want one. Heidi

My dad had a 57 VW bug roll top for many years when I was a kid. that thing is almost identical to this 356 just with some different body panels. One time, we were driving on a back road after school, and smoke started pouring out of the back end. Dad pulled over, ran around and opened the engine door, and the engine was on fire. he didn't have an extinguisher so he was just grabbing dirt off the ground throwing it at the engine to put out the fire which did eventually work. I remember in the winter putting my hands up against the slot next to the windshield where the defroster heat would come up. it was a really damn cold car to ride in in winter. And in the very back, the miniature luggage / trunk, our dog used to sit back there. I remember when I was a kid I could fit in that little spot too. it's probably similar in size to the frunk.

As one of only a few people who had the honor of driving this wonderful 356, I can attest that it is a truly magical experience and Franny & Heidi have done a wonderful job sorting out this vintage German cabriolet perfectly. It drives wonderful and turns heads wherever you go. If there is an automobile out there that might just have a soul, it would be Miss Eva.

356's are probably my favourite cars. Thank you for this excellent in depth review. This is how motoring should be. I'm grateful for lots of technical advancements, but sadly modern Porsches are an overcomplicated buttonfest with lots of tech that will date quickly and so many unnecessary gimmicks that do nothing but add weight and soften the driving experience.

Very good and informative video. The 356 was first presented in 3/1949 and cost in May 1950= 10500 DM! (Monthly Salary of a civil engineer 300 DM) The intention for the 356 was Prof. Porsches wish for a nice personal car for himself (because he lived in Gmund/Austria the first cars were handbuilt in Aluminum) , because he could not find a nice sports car on the market these days (ofcourse Germany was completely bombed down and the last car the people needed was a small sportscar!) without the import of Porsches to the USA by Max Hoffman, NY(the official importer) this car and the brand (I guess) would have never survived ( Porsches/Stuttgart/Germany built from 1950 till 1955 = 7627 only!) Hoffman also forced Porsche to build the rare "Speedster" and 15 of the super rare 356 "America". Also the "550" in which James Dean died. Also interesting the same Reutter/ Stuttgart built the first "KdF" (Peoples car/Beetle) Prototypes in 1932 with water-cooled 5 cyl star engines. Like your videos a lot and all the best from Central America, could not find a rust free 356 here yet and so I have to stay with my 997 .

I just love that little 356. You didn't say anything about the brakes. Did they still use drums front and back? Also where is reverse? Is it down and dogleg back like the Beetle? That wire for the valve stem is for tube tires. Will this thing burn unleaded gas? Does it have hardened valve seats or do you have to use an additive? One other thing. Does it have rack and pinion steering? I just love that little 356. Did I say that already? Lol

I just became very interested in Porche 356s in the last month after seeing one on KZfaq. I would love to have one but the prices are astronomical. Another car I like is the Karrmann Ghia VW. A beautiful car, but not the speed and handling of a Porche. And it would have to be a pre 1970 because the taillights became too big for the car running the look of the rear. Damn those 356 prices!

A Ghia would be a beautiful car. Go for it.

I love your video on the 356. Only one small correction: The plaque commemorates Porsche's victiories in german sports car championships (sportwagen = sports car, Meisterschaft = Championship). A guy named Walter Glöckler was working on sports cars with Porsche mechanicals and won multiple championships, later Porsche also raced the 550 Spyder (the James Dean car) successfully. Source: German is my native language.

Girls, I'm from Curitiba, Brazil. What's a T2-A car? I cannot understand, despite the several times that I watched this part of the video. I'm loving your videos, I came trough Garagem do Bellote KZfaq Channel. Thanks for sharing!

:) That is because it is one of the most confusing things about early Porsches! The T (type) designation was an internal code for updates and changes of the model years. But what do the A, B, and C meant then? you ask... They designate major model changes. The "T" numbers started with the "A"s and there was a T1 (1957) and T2 (1958). Then in 1960 we got the T5 "B" (there never was a T3 or T4). Then later there was a T6B and finally a C(T6). It takes years of studying and research to be able to spot the differences (i.e. T1A had beehive tail lights and the T2A had tear drop tail lights). B cars have higher front wings than the A cars. T6 cars have a straight across hood line and vents on the cowl and twin grills on the boot. "C" cars got disk brakes. There is a good book called Buying and Drive the Porsche 356 that does a good job with all the differences. There were lots of differences in the "Pre-A" cars as well.

How is the swing arm rear suspension? I have heard that if you lift off in a corner, the rear end can rise up, changing the rear wheel camber so that the tires lose grip and the rear end swings out. Is that a problem?

What a beautiful car. Lucky you both have this. I can only afford an old VW convertible, still fun but not like this 356 Cabriolet.

Heidi and Franny's Garage my VW is the Thing. Its history is tied to Porsche when Hitler summoned him to build a vehicle based on VW during the war. Porsche came up with Kubelwagen which I believe used during Poland and Afrika Korps under General Irwin Rommel. Anyway I wish I could afford even a Porsche 356 replica which is around 37k. Maybe someday.

Very nice. Everything I have said before applies once again to this video. Question: do y'all do your own editing and filming as well?
@HeidiandFranny

Hi Edwin. Yes, we both film and edit; however, Franny does some of the really fancy stuff. If you are interested in some of the ‘fancier’, edits, watch 918 Visit to Coffee and Car (Mar 2017), Ferrari 308 drive with Noble to lunch (Feb 2017), and Porsche 911 Canyon Drive (Feb 2017). Enjoy! Heidi

Good information ladies. I wasn't born when James Dean was killed in his '55 Spyder in California. :(

That was super sad... A truck turned in front of him. The truck driver was driving into the sun and never saw James. I believe he swerved left, then right and slid on the side of the road and caught a tree on the driver's door. He was a good guy and a dedicated racer.

Heidi and Franny's Garage The other driver was driving a 1950 Ford Tudor - 23-year-old Cal Poly student Donald Turnupseed. There were no trees involved, Dean’s injuries were caused by the other car hitting him almost head on. The collision caused Dean’s Spyder to lift off the ground spinning around several before settling on the side of the road, ejecting his passenger and mechanic out of the car.

Fantastic video! Did you have the valve seats hardened to run on modern gas? Also, please replace the house wire nut on the wire under the dash with an automotive one -- this can't be German engineering.

Hi Dwayne, those are BF Goodrich but I'm not super psyched with them. They have almost 30K miles and still look really new tread wise so they are super hard and not very sticky. Not great in the wet either. I think for the next set we'll try Cokers. Gota have the whitewalls! Franny
