Hi Everyone! This is our oil change video for our 2004 Porsche 911 (996) Turbo (X50). Sorry it is so long 😉 It is the “complete” process including draining both turbo reservoirs, pre-lubing with oil in the filter housing, and pulling the fuel pump fuse to clear the fuel rails in order to pre-lube at the end. That makes for a lot of steps! It is pretty straight forward and should take less than an hour depending on the steps you preform. I believe this also applies to the 997.1 (Mezger) but you may not have the turbo reservoir plugs so you can skip that step 😊.
If you have any questions or comments (or if I left anything out), please leave them below. Always consult your Owner’s Manual/Shop Manual to verify all steps and values.
The following steps are optional:
• Pulling the fuel pump relay for pre-lube after refilling the oil.
• Pouring oil down the filter container.
• Draining the two turbo reservoirs.
The parts used are:
• Oil Filter Kit (includes large rubber O-Ring): 996-107-225-53
(goo.gl/1P6N1P)
• Filter Cover Socket: 000-721-920-40
(goo.gl/ATgiPg)
• Turbo reservoir plug washers (2) 900-123-140-30-18X22 (Al)
(goo.gl/85Tqfx)
• Oil Tank plug washer: 900-123-010-20 20X26 (Cu)
• Case drain plug washer: 900-123-118-30 22X27 (Al)
• Oil cover snout rubber O-ring seal: 999-707-465-40
• Magnetic Drain Plug: 944-107-197-01
You’ll need:
• 15mm Wrench/Socket
• 19mm Wrench/Socket
• 27mm Wrench
• 8mm Hex
• Torque Wrench
Torque Values:
• Case Drain Plug: 52 Ft-Lbs
• Oil Tank Plug: 44 Ft-Lbs
• Turbo Plugs: 22 Ft-Lbs
• Oil Filter Cover: 19 Ft-Lbs
The oil I use is Mobil1 Turbo Diesel 5W-40, but use what is specified by your owners manual.
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

I was able to do the oil change yesterday. I just went step by step exactly as Franny said and it turned out perfect. Run of the mill oil changes spots wouldn't touch the car and I really wouldn't want them to knowing what I know now about changing this car's oil. Now that I can DIY it I don't have to worry about killing a bunch of time taking it to and picking it up from a European car shop. BTW Franny, I didn't have a 27 either....I don now! lol. Appreciate you Franny! Cheers, Darin

+John Gagliardi John, that is awesome! I am always happy to hear feedback like that. We do have some other things planned. I have been wanting to put heated seats in our car (the option was not chosen with our used car) and we are also going to put a garage door opener in where a blank switch is on the dash. We will also have some maintenance. I have been bugging Franny that it is time to bleed the brakes. It's been a busy summer. I hope we can get to it soon! Hope you have checked out some other videos on our Turbo. Not all are DIY, but there are some fun rides, a review and such. We do have a detailing winter car wash out there already. Glad you are enjoying our channel. Check out our BroAdmoor video. The 996 is the star on the trip (1st half of the video). Heidi

Thankyou Franny, the way that you describe with so much detail and the way you are so organised in the workshop is inspiring. Step by step we are led through with clarity and precision giving no chance of mistakes being made by those of us who wish to change the oil in our 996 turbos. I look forward to watching other videos of yours in the future on this amazing car as i have a 2002 model here in the UK. I doubt if there will be anyone else who can do a better job in producing a video to this standard. Thankyou again,

@@HeidiandFranny I've found a great way to get out oil stains. Fill a 16 oz squire bottle with warm water and add 2-3 good squirts of Dawn. Mix gently or add a few drops of alcohol and shake. That reduces the foam. Spray the spots as soon as you take the clothing off. It pre-treats the oil and keeps a lot of it from staining. It works on surface spots, even large surface spots, but won't take out anything that is soaked in oil. :( It will also take out dirt and grime. I work on my cars in our parking lot and it is dirty. I come in looking like Pig Pen!

I completed my own 996TT's oil change yesterday. Thanks to how comprehensive y'all are, there was not a single surprise - EXCEPT for the stripped hex on the right side turbo reservoir! Somebody screwed that up before I bought the car, but thanks to your guidance that this is a very small amount of oil, I didn't worry about skipping it. Everything else, including pull the C4 fuse and pre-lubricating through the filter, went precisely as your video showed. Thanks for all this excellent content!

As a Trainer/Assessor, I commend you on an excellent tutorial. This is the way a 'how-to' video should be done, with every single step clearly & thoroughly explained in detail.....including the most basic steps, which many tutorials skim over or omit because they assume incorrectly that 'everyone knows that' or 'it's common sense'. We all know what mechanics think about the 'common sense' of the engineers that design engines! 🤣🤨😏

Just a comment on the topic: Video is great- perfect. But heads up if you don't have a lift and use jack stands where the suspension ties into frame cross bar which is pretty much the only place you can put them. The jack stand makes placement of the oil catch basin difficult for the forward plug so definitely prepare for a mess. I used a small-ish 3 gallon bucket as the usual flat oil catch pan was impossible.

Great video, but I would recommend replace oil filter before you drain it, and it's not so necessary to fill oil filter with fresh oil.

Hello Heidi & Franny! Fantasic video which takes information and details to a whole new level! 🤩 I would love to see a video, as detailed as this, were you change the driving belt on a Porsche 997.2. Keep up the good work! Love your videos!

Only car I’ve owned I didn’t change the oil on myself....mainly to keep up the service history which is important in the UK on Porsche’s to sell them again

Excellent and very detailed lesson. I usually flush my crankcase with kerosene to get any "schmutz" left behind. About one pint is plenty. There are people that flush with SeaFoam, but kerosene works just as well.

Used to own vintage British sports cars; an early MGB Roadster, an MG TD, a Triumph TR4A, and a Morgan Plus 4. The old British cars often had a oil filter housed in a steel canister on the side of the engine. I remember many times after an oil change starting the engine with one hand on the ignition key ready to shut off the engine in a hurry if the oil O ring in the canister didn't seat properly which would blow oil everywhere. This could empty the pan very fast and ruin an engine. Once knew a TR3 owner who had just had his engine overhauled and was starting the engine for the first time after the rebuild. He had everything set to go except he had neglected to connect the oil line to the oil pressure gauge. These old Brits had direct line oil gauges so when the engine fired this guy found himself covered in oil before he could shut off the engine. Fortunately no damage was done. Fun times with old cars... Thanks again for the technical video!

Totally. You really don't want to twist the bottom that tank... I know my car and that drain plug was torqued properly and isn't stuck, but I can see how it could be a real issue on a new purchase when you don't know who put it on from the last oil change ;)

Automotive Underdogs Thanks! Yeah, that's going to be a thing... They still work fine for now ;). I think I'll try replacing the copper washers first, but it may not be the fittings. I need to do a bit of research first I think. Looking forward to your video. Franny

If I wouldn't be confident to do that oil change by myself after your video, then probably that will never happen. Great work lad's. Love the footage, the attention to details and the background explanations.

Sorry if my comment was misleading. I meant to say that when looking at Franny doing the job, task by task, I gained a lot of confidence in doing that myself. Obviously, my strengths are elsewhere. Thanks again!
