Heil Half/Pack Front Loader: Commercial Waste

Watch everyone's favorite garbage ginger deep in his element at the wheel of a front loader. Zach invited me up to Washington in Fall 2015 for a ride along in Amber, an early 2000s WX with Heil body out back. These Half/Packs came in what feels like 20 different flavors for the west coast market (my favorite being the DuraPack-bodied, half-bladed Southern California variant), every example you come across seems to have some substantial differences from any other, so unsurprisingly I haven't seen another one like this one which looks closer to the standard Half/Pack than the others. I think Zach called this a very early Sierra so we'll go with that. In any case all the proportions on the body look just right. I'm in love with the sleek, modestly sized triangular hopper wings, probably the best looking ones I've seen. Having grown up watching East Coast late 80s through mid 90s Half/Packs on roaring MRs the signature features shared between all Heils were deeply imprinted onto an impressionable young mind. To see those same arms, tailgate, cab shield but all moving at twice the usual speed was a real treat.
The company Zach was driving for is called Commercial Waste. A real no nonsense name. From what I saw on route their accounts are a bunch of recycling dumpsters in industrial parks, on this particular day Zach filled the truck once with cardboard and a second time with scrap lumber. Not exactly the usual application of a front loader but seems it works well enough. I think the full load ejected at the end of the video was 2 tons. The alternative would be a roll off box at each account or a heavy duty rear loader which would do a better job of braking down the wood but at a much slower rate. In any case it made for a cool shot of the packer. Along with the various dock stabs, pull outs done with the forks from inside the cab, and cardboard cages a fun route to film. This has to be my favorite front load video on KZfaq to this day. The driver’s skill with that old WX just makes this fun to watch each time !

This is very relaxing compared to inner city commerical. Not many pull out dumpsters, wierd garage things, main street pick ups, waiting for a scout, etc etc. haha. He keeps it real. I love the "standardness" of the truck no logos and such. Great shots. A++

Thaz gotta be a cool job there, driving around emptying out dumpsters at assigned locations, compacting the garbage in the semi after every load or 2, & of course sweep out the back of the semi at the end of the day.

Wow George nice work! Just filmed an MR from this company today and Alan sent me this video to brief me on what CWRR does. Hoping to get a ride along myself lol. The fact that they offer(ed) wood collection is super neat, only company I’ve seen that does it. Awesome sounding truck as well!

Good old Zach and his FLs, he loves them eh, never going to see him driving an ASL?! lol You can see he's a seasoned operator, definitely knows what he is doing and I'm sure he's very clued on the engineering with so much time around them. Good thing is that he knows what the viewers want so he can put on a swift show, being that speed and slamming, even some nifty skills with a few of those fork to bin manoeuvres - too bad we didn't see him putting any of the containers back in place :P I love the intensity of FLs (maybe not so much newer models) which the forceful hydraulics and that solid slam up the top, banging the container and shuddering the whole truck - got a few of these in the video ;) I liked that close side view of the truck at 3:20, showed the true size of the machine as a tidy 6x4, what a contrast with the tiny bin being emptied too, also made me spot the different wheel guards with the brushes on top, very awesome! I think my favourite shot started at 5:47 but, forking the bin off the dock, that quick roll back for clearance and a generously throttled cycle to follow, just made for a mean view, even a bit of recycle clatter to add some spice, all seen start to finish placing it back on the dock with half stabbed pockets. Cardboard cages seem to be so much more fun to watch than standard opaque containers, probably just the fact you can watch all the material pour out in easy sight. Sweet to see an in-cab shot included, enjoyed the dual lever operation, something almost inexistent down here today. I was counting on a top-of-the-body packing shot from you, the (FL rare) wood stream made it extra entertaining to watch, was expecting a whole lot of buckling, crunching, scraping and launched pieces flying out of the hopper under all the pressure haha It looks like some decent body volume was taken up in that unloading shot - was it about a packed out load or could more wood have been put on? Did your camera malfunction at 2:02 with the sound? Noticed the volume drop right off after that slam of the first container and slowly increase back to normal - I told you FLs were intense!!! =] Overall I just loved the location where this video was taken, proper industrial scene with other competitor bins onsite and a presence of roll-off jobs, no residential in sight, making the company name extra true... or maybe it should've been "Industrial Waste" for this video. Knew we would see some of Zach's famous arms up and forks down stows above the cab, his video signature.

Thank you for all your work and dedication. Could you possibly make a vid showing the upper exposed tailgate structure of a Leach 2r Packmaster like this one or a 2r2 in action. I am to this day fascinated by how those Leach rl hydraulics and packer blade looks from that point of view.

He's really smooth with the controls. Being 3 days into front load myself I quickly learned slamming bins is easy, finessing not so much. And my fav bit of the video is the wood packing shot where that long oversized pallet breaks as it's wedged between the packer and that brace running between the two hopper wings. More durable than I expected for sure.

Thanks Simon! The cardboard cages give that cool perspective of how everything falls into the hopper. I typically don't like front load as much since all the action is 12 feet far overhead.
